Try This: Getting Kids Out of Bed in the Morning
Filed under: Try This
These New York moms agreed, waking teens up in the morning is no easy task. Some use bribery like delicious breakfast to lure their kid out of bed. Others use harsher methods like pulling the covers off and letting them get really cold!
Our resident AdviceMama gives some pointers on how to separate your teen and her pillow in the morning:
"Rather than resorting to threats, bribes and general hysteria to light a fire under that slow-moving youngster of yours, focus on waking her and her groggy brain up without relying on drama and shouting to get her adrenalin pumping. Bring her a protein smoothie or an apple slice to kick-start her system when you wake her up. Turn on energetic music to help your daughter shift out of her foggy state," she says.

And if they're late for most of theyre school careers thats fine. because news flash: highschools dont really have a punishment for being late, at least mine didnt. All u have to do is sign yourself in. but one day when they want a job or to go to college they'll get up on theyre own. dont use hard early mornings to amuse yourselves because all that will happen is your kids will remember how big of a jerk theyre parents were to wake them up.

Jim said...No matter what we did we couldn't get our teenage daughter to get up and ready in time to catch the bus. Finally, in desperation, we just let her sleep in a while. Then, with a paper bag packed with some school clothes, took her to the school in her PJ's and let her out in front of the school. She never overslept again.

Jim said...What type of music do the vast majority of teens detest? Answer: Classical. Just blast some classical music into their rooms and they'll be up. Better yet, put their cell phones out of reach and then call their cell phone. They'll leap out of bed to answer their cell phone.

Jim said...In reality, teens have a lot of homework that keeps them up late. Each teacher believes that their subject is the most important. There should be a limit to the amount of time an assignment takes. Teens need about nine to ten hours of sleep each night. It's impossible for them to get that much sleep with the heavy work load they have. Take a look at their home work assignments and judge for yourself. Parents need to band together and fight long assignments in their schools.

Julie said...One time my 3 stepchildren couldn't quite wake up and hustle fast enough to catch the school bus. My husband drove them into the school in his big old rusty impala work car. He pulled right up to the front entrance of the school and revved the car loudly several times to be sure that everyone noticed that they had arrived. The average teenager is mortified to be seen with a parent, let alone a parent wearing work clothes and driving an uncool beater car. They never missed the bus again even if it meant brushing their teeth with rainwater dripping from the roof. (The power went out a lot, but that is another story...)

Kathleen said...Apple slice/Protein Smoothie? You have got to be kidding. TEACH them how to be responisible. BE the parent. Mine use the alarm clock and if they don't hear it. Lights on/Pull back covers/Time to get up announcement. Voila! Bribes and pampering create whining, lazy, baby-like princesses. We don't need any more of those. Good Grief....

Ruth said...Wow! My kids young were fine to get up but as the middle child aged it all went to hell. Wouldn't get up, when he did go to school skipped class, lied to us, stole from family and strangers. I was so desperate to get him up one day I threw ice cubes in the bed with him. He knew everything and all adults were idiots. Didn't graduate, had a child without marrying, has college prepaid waiting on him. Second child due in July, working crappy job, girlfriend's parents have thrown them out. Currently has a warrant out on him for a felony: theft. He is 25 and now gets up easily to head to whatever job. Has ruined his life and involved children in it.

doublendoesit said..."John" is right....however all I used was a cup of cold water....drip drip and if they didn't work then well a cup of cold water did the trick. It only makes thier PJ's a little wet no biggie, after a fews times of "Drip drip drip" on thier head no more problems.

Julia said...I had a German Shephed who loved to go after anyone who was under covers. I called the kids to get up ONCE. Then I sent the dog up. She always took a flying leap from the doorway, landing on the bottom of the bed and then went after whoever moved. Only did it twice, then sent the dog a few times. When the kids heard the dog racing up the steps all I heard was feet hitting the floor!!!!

Vicky said...Goodness people, teach your kids to obey! When I told my son it was time to get up, he got up, period. No drama or fights, if you start teaching children to listen when they are young you wouldn't have these problems as they get older. Forget about bringing them a shake or fruit, make them come to the table for breakfast or they go without. If they won't get up in time for school, let them be late and suffer the consequences, they will get the idea.
It is no wonder this country has turned its children into a bunch of lazy, whiners. Make them do it, you are the adult, it is that simple.
