Breast Milk Baby Doll Teaches Kids to Breast-Feed
Filed under: In The News, Weird But True, Toys
Are you one of these people who find yourself ever-so creeped out by the sight of a woman breast-feeding her baby in public?
Oh, you ain't see nothing yet.
Picture a 7-year-old girl -- or boy, for that matter -- strapping on little flowered falsies so a baby doll can suckle the imaginary breasts -- complete with slurping and gurgling sounds.
A lot of adults could do without that particular image.
However, the folks at Berjuan Toys in Spain think their new Breast Milk Baby is a dandy way to teach children how to breast-feed an infant. After all, you don't want to start second grade without mastering that skill.
"The Breast Milk Baby will revolutionize our nation's attitudes to good infant health, while letting little girls share in the wonder and magic of motherhood," company executives write on their website. "The Breast Milk Baby lets young girls express their love and affection in the most natural way possible, just like Mommy!"
For $99, kids get a very hungry doll and an apron-like top with painted flowers in lieu of nipples.
Not everyone likes this concept.
"Only a morally corrupt so-called parent would condone/justify this doll being sold and marketed for young girls who have yet to reach puberty and menstruation age," posts one reader in response to a story in the New York Daily News.
But one father tells "Good Morning America" he thinks the doll is a good idea.
"We've got another baby due in June, and I think it's going to be a really neat way for our daughter Grace to identify and connect with Mom," J.C. Renners tells the news program. "It's an interesting concept."
Dennis Lewis, the U.S. spokesman for Berjuan Toys, tells the San Francisco Chronicle some people have even filed complaints on behalf of God. But he's not convinced God is all that miffed.
"About 20 percent of the messages have been hateful and mean," he tells the Chronicle. "We're being called perverts and pedophiles for promoting feeding our babies the way God intended? Churches all over the world are filled with images of Mary nursing baby Jesus, and yet we can't imagine letting our daughters learn how important breast-feeding is for our society?"
America clearly has a problem with breasts, he adds.
"As Americans we've been duped into believing there's something shameful and taboo about breast-feeding, but the truth is that this idea was created to sell more baby formula," he tells the Chronicle. "The Breast Milk Baby is a serious product, created by a small family-owned Christian toy manufacturer who strongly believes in the benefits of feeding babies the natural God-given way. Our dolls are beautiful and well made, and we're proud of them."
"We stand by our statement: Little girls need to learn to breast-feed."

Kelly said...Wow, I was surprised to see how negative the reaction is to this doll. I have 3 daughters that were all breast fed. Each one of them would pretend to breastfeed their baby doll along with me. It was very sweet and never discouraged. I think this is a great idea. I would have bought one for my daughters had it been available. I am sure my 4 year old would enjoy one still, but I don't see myself spending $99 on a doll right now.

Ken said...Actually Jenna, for hundreds of years little girls were probably playing with dolls exactly like this, since it's only within the past 100 years or so that the notion of feeding an infant via a bottle filled with artificial formula has become more the norm than feeding them the way nature intended. After all, the whole reason women have breasts to begin with is to feed their infants isn't it?

Jenna said...Actually Ken - It's true that breast feeding is natural and healthy, and there's nothing wrong with little girls, on their own initiative, imitating mommy, but I was referring to the fact that dolls haven't had the technology to make crying and fake sucking action like these controversial dolls do.

Ken said...Sure they have Jenna. Many dolls out on the market for little girls pretend to suck on baby bottles and cry when they haven't been fed recently. The only difference here is this one is designed to be pretend breast-fed instead of bottle-fed.
I think it's a pretty sad indictment of our society and how we view women and girls that we're so conditioned to think that anything and everything associated with a woman's breasts is in some way dirty or perverted. That line of thinking simply perpetuates the objectification of women. All this doll is doing is mimicking the natural act of breastfeeding. There's nothing dirty about that.

But when your 12 year old daughter wants to start dating and having sex, you have NO ONE to blame but yourself. Your child does NOT need to know ANYTHING about raising a baby at 4 years old, she's still one herself. Most mothers want to keep their children little for as long as they can, you, you're trying to get her ready for childbirth before she can spell. Our society keeps asking why our children are so into sex today and so many teenagers get pregnant. I don't know why it's so hard, the answer it's right in our face AND theirs. Everywhere our children today look there is some sort of connection or suggestion about sex or something attached to it, just like this doll. You don't think when you hand a doll like this to your 4 year old they're not going to ask where babies come from? To explain to a 4 year old where babies come from in my opinion is sick. NO 4 year old on the face of this earth needs to be exposed to ANYTHING remotely relating to sex, having a baby, nursing it, or where they come from. Please, for God's sake, let your baby be a child. LET her be an INNOCENT little girl for as long as possible. WHY IN THE WORLD would you want to take away that innoence from her? I know that after I started to find out about more adult things in life even as a child I missed that innocence I once had as a child. Life is never the same once you have to start worrying about all this stupid stuff. Go get help Kelly, I don't think you've grown up yourself yet.

Ken said...basketpam, why exactly is this doll more likely to make the young girls playing with them start exploring sex earlier than any other doll that allows them to pretend they are mothers? I've never seen any studies or heard any commentary from experts linking breastfeeding with sexual promiscuity.
Maybe the fact that you immediately associate anything regarding a woman's breasts with sex instead of nourishing an infant is the problem, not this doll. If anything this doll would help young girls grow up with a much better notions about themselves and their bodies, teaching them that breasts have an important purpose that has nothing to do with sex.

michele said...Actually,you seem to be the real fool here , basketpam for equating a natural act like breastfeeding with having sex. It is about nurturing your child, which young children like to mimic and should learn at an early age. Do you really think a child who watches a woman breastfeeding a child or mimics the act of breastfeeding is going to make them want to become sexually active at a younger age? Ridiculous!! I am much more concerned about monitoring what my kids watch on tv. Attitudes like yours have given breastfeeding the negative stigma that it has.

Cathy said...I am a maternity nurse and I think this doll is great. It is not teaching the girls "how" to nurse, it is showing them that the way to nuture their babies is by nursing. If all a 4 or 5 year old feeds her dolls with is bottles, then that will seem the most natural to her when she grows up. By the way, I am not opposed to bottle feeding, but breast is technically best. If the girl had to put on little fake nipples instead of the flowered top, then I would be opposed because of the image it would present to others. It is sad that a breast, which is supposed to be a source of health and comfort, has become so sexual in the United States. We are one of the only countries that looks at the breast as a primarily sexual object. Take on the Abercrombie pushup bikini for being wrong, not a sweet little breastfeeding doll.

There was a time when a doll did nothing but look cute and stimulate a child's imagination. Nothing stimulates a child's imagination any longer because toy versions do everything ..No more making vroom vroom sounds while pushing a car along the ground. I miss the days when children played pretend, when they were such imaginative beings.

Megan said...Basketpam, your notion that a child should not be educated about childbirth and reproduction is ridiculous. My mother read me the book "Where Did I Come From?" when I was five years old. It's a children's book and there's nothing gross about it - it's facts.
According to your hypothesis, I should have been a promiscuous teenage mother because I was "exposed" to the facts of life at an early age. Nothing could be further from the truth. I lost my virginity at 26 (to my husband at the time) and am now 31 and (by choice) still childless. Few holes in your theory, I think.

Superfly said...basketpam ? Sounds more like basket case! t's not about training your kid to be a breeder, it's about sharing a moment with them where they're otherwise excluded (for obvious reasons). A situation where you need to exclude the older child, which could lead to jealousy and animosity now becomes a moment all three can share.
