Twins Now On the Way for Couple Involved in Embryo Mix-Up
Filed under: In The News, Twins, Triplets, Multiples
After a clerical mix-up in a fertility clinic in 2009, Carolyn and Sean Savage were informed they were carrying another couple's child.
The wrong embryo had been implanted, "Today" reports, but the Sylvania Township, Ohio, couple opted to continue the pregnancy, anyway.
"We knew that we had somebody's very, very wanted child," Caroline Savage tells the news show. "I just couldn't see doing -- taking that away from another mother. There's just no way."
Carolyn Savage delivered a baby boy, Logan, who was given to his biological parents.
The Savages gave birth to a boy, Drew, in 1994, with no complications. But then fertility issues began to arise. In 1997, Ryan was born prematurely, and, after 10 years and four miscarriages, the family welcomed Mary Kate in 2008, using IVF.
"That IVF produced extra embryos we had frozen for later pregnancy attempts which led us to a frozen embryo transfer in February 2009 and the call from the doctor alerting us of the medical error," the couple writes on a site for its book, "Inconceivable: A Medical Mistake, the Baby We Couldn't Keep, and Our Choice to Deliver the Ultimate Gift."
The Savages tell "Today" they wanted to use the remaining embryos, via surrogate Jennifer Onash. She miscarried an earlier pregnancy, but is now expecting twins for the couple, due in August.
"Now that Jennifer is expecting twins for our family, we are overwhelmed with gratitude," Carolyn Savage writes on the "Today" website. "Obviously, we are grateful to be expecting two more children with Jennifer's help. But, more importantly, we are grateful for the lessons Jennifer taught us about generosity, kindness and love. That will always be her greatest gift to us."

Phoenix said...@jeremiahwasabullfrog: It's "their." And learn to use grammar correctly. Also, what about the thousands and thousands of children in orphanages or just plain homeless? Do they not deserve to be adopted? Do they not deserve to have a home? Instead of using IVF for their third child, why not adopt and give a child -- who has already been born into this world -- a safe and loving home?

Voice of Reason said...Nice Fanetiks...let's turn the whole planet into communist China. More people who disagree with their government certainly deserve to get executed, and it would help the over-population problem. Your idea to start practicing eugenics is also a good one. Hitler would be proud of you.

Cindy said...Fanetiks, I totally agree with you! In my first year of college (1969), the first thing my sociology instructor asked us was "How many children do you want to have?". Most students answered four or five children. He then had us read Paul Erlich's book "The Population Bomb" which was a real mind opener. Zero population growth does not mean that we cannot have any children, as some people mistakenly believe. It means limiting the number of children we have to two.
From the beginning of time to about the year:
1804, the population grew to 1 billion people...123 years later, to:
1927, the population grew to 2 billion people.....33 years later, to:
1960, the population grew to 3 billion people.....14 years later, to:
1974, the population grew to 4 billion people.....13 years later, to:
1987, the population grew to 5 billion people.....12 years later, to:
1999, the population grew to 6 billion people.....11 years later, to:
2010, the population grew to 6.8 billion people...and growing.......
Some people argue that all the world's population would fit into a space the size of Texas....the problem with that argument is that not all of the world's space is inhabitable. Plus (and this is the greatest problem), although the world has a lot of space, IT DOES NOT HAVE AN INFINITE AMOUNT OF NATURAL RESOURCES TO SUSTAIN THIS GROWING POPULATION.

Cindy said...Fanetiks, While I totally agree with you regarding overpopulation, I totally DISAGREE with your comment that states "with exceptions only for people of extraordinary intellectual gifts." There are many intellectuals out there who have no creative abilities, who have no mechanical abilities, who have no common sense whatsoever, and who have no morals and/or ethics......sometimes the smartest people can be the nastiest too. It takes all kinds of people with different areas of intelligence and abilities to create a society. My concern is overpopulation....NOT who should be able to have children.

I wouldn't comment except for the fact that they have made it their business to spill their story on TV.

Wonder if the other couple were as unselfish and helped the Savage's for their surrogate?
Wonder why the other couple wasnt unselfish and carry a child for the Savage's? After them giving such a wonderful gift why didnt the other couple return the favor? They should have carried a child for the Savage's...

But I will admit this. It IS some of God's work. He allows such pathetic individuals to remain on the earth.

when this planet is already overloaded. Yes they should have been
happy with three. All around us news shows, tv reality shows such as the underage girls having babies are sending the wrong message. When will people wake up with rising unemployment, severely downturned economies and worldwide poverty- illegals coming into the country and droppin babies like roaches to partake of the freedoms we are all stuggling to pay for through our taxes.
The price our environment is paying is tragic. Each baby born and
through the life cycle produces tons of garbage and depletion to the environment. Endangered species and animals destroyed cruely for food as well as our natural resources......when will people realize the overpopulation is devastating and the main problem.
