What you need: A blank piece of paper, scissors and a fine-tipped pen.

How to play: To make the origami-based fortune teller, cut a nine-inch square out of the blank sheet of paper, fold it in half diagonally to make a triangle, and then fold in half diagonally again to make a smaller triangle. Unfold the paper and fold in each corner to meet in the center crease, forming a square. Flip the paper over and turn in those edges to meet in the center, making a smaller square. Lift up the flaps on the other side and place a thumb and finger in each of the flaps to make a moving sqaure form. With the pen, write the name of a color on each of the outside squares. Write a number on each of the eight inside triangles. Write a fortune (such as "You will be rich" or "You will have 12 kids") under the flap of each inside triangle.

The rules: To tell a fortune, ask someone to pick one of the colors on the outside squares. Open and close the fortune teller, spelling out the color (if the person chooses red, open for "R", close for "E" and open for "D"). Ask the person to pick a number from inside, and open and close that number of times. Ask the person to pick another number, and open up the triangle and read the fortune inside.

How to win: There are no winners in this game -- it's just for fun.

What else you need to know: Your child may choose to decorate the fortune teller -- also known as a cootie catcher -- with stickers or drawings, or to color the outside squares instead of writing the name of a color.
