How 'bout both? Way cool technology developed at MIT (which we won't pretend to fully understand) is behind the Brush with Genius Paint and Play Activity Toy from Colorforms.
Your child simply uses watercolors with the souped up paint brush (two AAA batteries required). She paints with one hand, and, when she drags her finger along her painted lines, sounds are made. Our tester had a blast making birds "sing" and colorful squiggles "squeak."
Find Brush with Genius, $14.99, at mass retailers and Amazon.
