Northwestern Cans Popular Sexuality Course After Live Sex Act Demo
Filed under: In The News
Think your teens are being bombarded with enough sexual images through TV, movies, music and that cesspool called the Internet? Add the college classroom to the list.
Well, actually, you can go ahead and cross that one off, since officials at Northwestern University have announced they will cut its popular "Human Sexuality" course next school year, Reuters reports.
The class had folks in a serious tizzy in February when a naked woman demonstrated a "modified reciprocating saw" sex toy in front of the class, which led her to orgasm, according to the news service.
The demo linked to fetishes was optional -- about 100 of the 600 students enrolled in the psychology course attended -- but the act still led to the decision to end the course, Reuters reports.
To no avail, the psych prof who taught the class, J. Michael Bailey, said he was very sorry at the time and promised to refrain from such future acts, the news service says. But he noted the amount of media attention the demo grabbed.
"That this is so reveals a stark difference of opinion between people like me, who see absolutely no moral harm in what happened, and those who believe that it was profoundly wrong," he wrote.

Lauren said...This is pretty ridiculous. Why is it that when one incident happens, anything related to it is instantly cut out, shut down, or banned from occurring again? Just cut the "demo" out and continue with the class. Why people are so sensitive and think that one 'controversial' incident justifies shutting down and entire (and popular) college course is beyond me.

Snooz said...Granted, these "kids" are adults and have seen, or experienced, much of this already; there are places you can go to pay and watch those kinds of shows. It's definitely not classroom material! And, shouldn't the woman who was "performing" have been arrested for indecent exposure in a public place? If it's all good and right, then why didn't this prof have her demonstrate out on the campus square? He's a perv.

kim said...You are right Snooz, they could have gone anyplace to see that but they chose to stay in that class to see it. At any time they could have dropped the class if they were offended. The only people that seem to be offended by this are a bunch of people who have only read about it or seen it on the news. And yet i have not heard anything from anybody in that classroom being treated for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Do you really think college students need to have this kind of crap taught to them by some idiot prof who would better fit as a shock jock aka Howard Sterns ilk?

My questions to you, is that inclusive of rape and acts of pedphilia?
I know you meant well, but young emotions run rampant without consequential thought.

James - Longdrycreek Ranch - TX Panhandle said...The professor in question, who is a relativist and thinks "anything goes" is the way to swing, should not be teaching in a university. The fellow has an incredible lack of judgment.
The lack of judgment is he bring his own relativistic bias into the classroom when a classroom should have balance views on subjects.
But subject or disciplines, as they once were called, have become soapbox theater in most universities.
And of course to measure the value of a course, however popular, by the word "popular" betrays the role of the university in the formation of its graduates.
If I had a child who considered Northwestern, I would move long to perhaps a saner enviorment, Hillsdale College, where one get a quality education without exposure to professors, as J. Bailey. Amazing this fellow is non-judgmental except for those who profess moral views. So much for relativism.

Joseph said...Boy, you sure are making a lot of assumptions and passing them off as established facts; you must know this professor personally and have information the rest of aren't privy to, because nothing in this article demonstrates a structurally "relativist" viewpoint on behalf of this person. And nothing shows an "anything goes" attitude, either. I'm sure there are a lot of things he wouldn't "go" for and didn't--he could have done the demo himself, but didn't; he could have invited the students to participate in the demo, but didn't; he could have made attendance mandatory and testable, but didn't, etc. I think a better argument could be made that YOU are a relativist: his way of teaching his material is inappropriate or harmful relative to the way that YOU think it should be taught. By that estimation, we're all "relativist"; a family down my block thinks it's immoral for women to wear any makeup whatsoever, while the organist and other women in my church don't think it's immoral at all. Relative positions, wouldn't you say? And finally, his statement about the media response to this incident isn't in any way intolerant or judgmental about people who have different moral views; he made a simple statement of fact that the media response reveals stark differences in attitudes, and it does. No judgement there; he's not bashing anybody. I suspect you have a bee in your bonnet about whatever you think relativisim is and decided to try and "smear" this guy with that term, thinking that calling him a "relativist" tells us all we need to know about him. It kind of tells us more about you.

John said...As our culture becomes more liberal, structured organizations (like colleges) are becoming more prudish. The class is Human Sexuality and now the school is acting like OMG can you believe this happened...for petes sake, get over it. It was optional and not mandated and think how much misinformation is out there via internet and second hand info...here it is in a very academic culture getting rid of myths and stories. I thik it is a great format and while I may or maynot attend I would like to have the option if I wanted to.
Can you imagine what barriers and myths could be broken down if we had more situations like this...I wonder if Northwestern has nude models in art classes? Our organized institutions schools, churches etc are becoming more puritan as society as a whole progresses

Fran the Man said...What I would like to know is why the prof only showed a woman. Why couldn't he have shown a man and woman? We live in a culture that is so focused on women's bodies, and we are objectified like no other. I wouldn't have had a problem reading this unless it was a man and a woman who displayed sex acts.

CJB said...I agree with you, but on the other hand, a womans body is a work of art, very attractive, a mans body is not isn't as attractive. I think this is why you see more of the female body shown. My thoughts anyway.

Clara said...Says who, CBJ? I think men's bodies are very attractive and that is also up to the beholder. Not every woman's body is a work of art. My question is was this important to teach the class and it would appear that it wasn't.

Kizzie Lollipop said...Really? This what people find to complain about? The people who took this Human Sexuality course were adults, not children. Also, it was a college course meaning they could remove themselves from the classroom at any point in time should they feel uncomfortable. They took a course that has a title which pretty well explains what they should expect. Sure, it might be a little shocking to see the display at first, but these students were studying this psychological aspect of humans. The professor was just providing a different type of learning. I don't see anything wrong with it and neither should the college.

Taking a shower, using the toilet, popping a pimple, dressing and undressing are also part of daily living and there are no such classes 'demonstrating' these acts! I'm no prude, but even I find this so-called 'class' unnecessary and exploitive. The 'just because' argument is getting old and is no viable justitication for lack of good judgement ~ even at the college or university level! I'm glad the class has been omitted. It should never have been offered in the first place!

Alicia said...Yes, but there are no dangerous myths and stereotypes surrounding pimple popping. Sex and all the flavors and forms it comes in, however, remain shrouded in mystery and ignorance for most people. That's why courses like this are important They banish that ignorance. A live demonstration is useful because you can't change the camera angle during porn or have the woman explain. There's also the fact that porn is largely faked so what you see onscreen isn't genuine emotion or practical behavior. A live demonstration would be more honest; a less idealized way of presenting a fetish or form of sexuality that's often considered "sick" or "wrong" and is in fact simply misunderstood.
