Facebook Gets British Headmaster in a Bit of Sticky Wicket
Bernard Routledge was the headmaster of Howell's School, a veddy elite private school for young ladies, until he became the star of a Facebook page dedicated to the Bernard Routledge Appreciation Society -- or "BRAS."
There shall apparently be no BRAS as this girls' schools. The Daily Telegraph reports Routledge and his colleague Helen Price, associate head of pastoral care at the school, have been suspended while school officials ask, "What's all this then?"
Routledge was definitely appreciated. At least for a time. The Facebook page proclaims him "the world's greatest source of banal trivia." It further extols him as a teacher, "mentor, manipulator and statesman" whose expertise covers "swearing" and "tiling your bathroom with marzipan."
He is also noted for "gripping tales of police investigations, gruesome as they are."
Exactly what part of this tribute got the school's board of trustees' bloomers in a twist is uncertain. The Telegraph reports the word among the trustees is mum. They merely say the suspensions where the result of "social networking and conduct" claims.
However, even among the Brits, lips don't come much stiffer than they do at Howell's in North Wales. The Telegraph families pay close to $10,000 a term to send girls there for an upper- crust education.
Howell's was founded in 1859 by the trustees of Thomas Howell, a cloth merchant who left a legacy of 20,000 gold ducats for the education of orphaned Welsh maidens.
According to the newspaper, Routledge was not blowing his own horn. The page was set up by a group of his former students at King's School in Cheshire.
