City council members in Forest Park, Ga., want theirs to be a town without ... well, let's just say it rhymes with "pity." Wouldn't want to offend anyone's delicate sensibilities. Neither would the councilors. So, that means no more breast-feeding in public.
Councilors passed a law May 16 in the Atlanta suburb against public nudity, which includes breast-feeding anyone older than 2.
City Manager John Parker tells the ABC affiliate in Atlanta this nips a potential wave of public nudity in the bud.
"It sets up a process whereby we can try to control nudity throughout the entire city," Parker tells the TV station.
Not if Regina M. Benjamin, the U.S. surgeon general, has anything to say about it. She supports this idea of women breast-feeding their children. Just four months ago, she released "The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Support Breast-Feeding."
"Many barriers exist for mothers who want to breast-feed," Benjamin said in her announcement in January. "They shouldn't have to go it alone. Whether you're a clinician, a family member, a friend or an employer, you can play an important part in helping mothers who want to breast-feed."
A federal law allows women to breast-feed in federal buildings or federal property.
Why, it's enough to make Southerner swoon.

I love all the fuss and storm about "nudity" when it is a such a subjective issue...and this over breastfeeding? What is wrong with this country? We can sell magazines with tooth-floss swimsuits on an annual SI rag in every shopping aisle in this country but some gov't body is BANNING BREASTFEEDING? I wish I was still nursing so I could drive there and breastfeed my kid and DARE them to arrest me. GAH!

Woo-hoo said...Thank you for this law! No one wants to see this in public. Breastfeeding two-year-olds is weird.
Seeing it is is even weirder. It's not analagous to any of the comparisons I've seen commented about here.

I mean, does a mom need to carry around proof of age for her child to avoid arrest? Should she wear a burka when nursing? And my point is that if we start making laws like this for a nursing mother then why stop there--I don't want to see some tart in a tank top and no bra or a gross guy in a wife beater with his man boobs showing from the sides, but should I lobby for a law and then tax supported law enforcement to waste time finding and charging/arresting the offenders? Come on. You don't want to see? Don't look. If I have to drive by a giant Hooters billboard every day with my kids on the way to elementary school when our country bans breastfeeding then I think I have a right to be a bit ticked.

Its natural, healthy and economical You want to be offended with something look at the males walking around with their pants under their butts! Grown men too! How about the men that walk around with bellies sticking out under their shirts! Lets pass a law on that. Or the cracks your forced to see sitting at these public places. Please!

What a crazy society this is when quasi pornographic photos are seen everywhere and where people of all ages walk down the street stuffing their faces with disgusting, greasy processed fast foods. Yet, this society sees fit to ban a mother from feeding her baby in public. Pathetic.

And there wasn't even a baby involved there, just a kid named Justin....maybe young enuf to be her child.

So as you can see, we find ourselves in a bit of a circular prison here.
Nobody "forces" you to watch them feed their babies. I find, say, a mentally handicapped person who can't feed themselves well far more disturbing to watch eat. But y'know what? They're people -- so I think they should have the right to eat anywhere I'm allowed to eat.
If this city wishes to ban eating in public, that's cool with me. Otherwise, this law is both silly and a little sick.
I find it highly perverted that someone would tell a woman feeding her child is a sexual act. I suggest that anyone who agrees with this twisted view of nature might wish to consider seeking counseling, or some sort of immersion therapy to see if it improves their condition.
And, no, I am not claiming that anything & everything "natural" is, therefore, also find for public display. Sex is natural, but should be private. Defecation is natural, but again, private (and for hygiene purposes, private and somewhere safely distant from others). Death and childbirth are both natural, but both can be scary, so it may be best to keep them somewhat private (or at least keep children and others who may be frightened away if you don't think they can handle it). There are also plenty of unnatural things which can and should be public -- driving a car. Listening to an iPod. Etc.
Breastfeeding is why women have breasts. Lusting after them is why Westerners have hangups.

Don't you have anything better to do than JUDGE people. It is God's business to judge not ours.

On the one hand I breastfed my youngest until he was about 26 months old, but by that point it was mostly nap and bedtimes for comfort mostly so I see no problem with still breastfeeding a child of 2. On the other hand I do not see that it would be necessary to breastfeed a child 2 or above in public, they simply do not NEED to breastfeed on demand like a smaller child, are very mobile and verbal and this could lead to uncomfortable/awkward situations for mother and public. Now if a mother chose to breastfeed her 2 year old plus in a doctor's office to sooth a vaccine/shot I definitely do not see a problem with that as it is not in general public and is a soothing technique for the child.

puppyfluffer said...So if you can see the value in nursing a toddler for the pain/trauma of receiving a vaccine, what about a skinned knee at the park? I have nursed all of my children past infancy and they have weaned on their own timeline. I have nursed everywhere and have never had any negative comments come my way. Breastfeeding has life long beneficial effects for both the mother and the child. Our country has horrendous breastfeeding success. Many mothers start but at the 3 month mark, few are continuing to give their baby it's biologically appropriate food. We are so uptight about breasts in this culture. It's mindboggling to me how we use breasts and sexual inuendo to market products yet shun nursing mothers ever chance we get.
