City Bans Breast-Feeding Children Older Than 2 in Public

City council members in Forest Park, Ga., want theirs to be a town without ... well, let's just say it rhymes with "pity." Wouldn't want to offend anyone's delicate sensibilities. Neither would the councilors. So, that means no more breast-feeding in public.
Councilors passed a law May 16 in the Atlanta suburb against public nudity, which includes breast-feeding anyone older than 2.
City Manager John Parker tells the ABC affiliate in Atlanta this nips a potential wave of public nudity in the bud.
"It sets up a process whereby we can try to control nudity throughout the entire city," Parker tells the TV station.
Not if Regina M. Benjamin, the U.S. surgeon general, has anything to say about it. She supports this idea of women breast-feeding their children. Just four months ago, she released "The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Support Breast-Feeding."
"Many barriers exist for mothers who want to breast-feed," Benjamin said in her announcement in January. "They shouldn't have to go it alone. Whether you're a clinician, a family member, a friend or an employer, you can play an important part in helping mothers who want to breast-feed."
A federal law allows women to breast-feed in federal buildings or federal property.
Why, it's enough to make Southerner swoon.

I'm amazed at the number of individuals who are comparing breast feeding to bowel movements! Are you serious?!...They are NOT the same!
As one person responded, they would not want to be served a meal in a public toilet and I agree, NAAAAASSSSTTTYYYY!!!! So why should infants and their moms be subjected to this Ridiculous idea, because of a few insensitive or clueless people? C'mon people, breastfeeding is natural! Yes, it should be done with discretion, but that is not always possible. But to ban it and put an age limit on it...c'mon!

teresa said...I don't support the ban but I do wonder why anyone would bf a child over age 2 anyway? When a lady once told me bf her son until he was almost 4 I very nearly vomited in response. breastfeeding babies is best and it's a wonderful connection between moms and babies but over age 2 is bizarre and sick.

Dennis said...Good grief, If the baby or any child that still takes it is hungry, let Mom do it. 99% of the time the breast is covered anyhow. This is 2011, grow up Georgia. We are way too politically correct, we can still speak our minds, let mom feed the child and shut up about it.

Sarah said...This is just so sad. The American Academy of pediatrics recommend children be breastfed until they are AT LEAST 2 years old. Children who are breastfed have a lower chance of becoming obese in adulthood, score stronger on tests, are less likely to develop allergies in addition to a host of other benefits. It is so hard for women to get the support they need to breastfeed and that is why so few children are nursed and those who are rarely are nursed beyond 6 months. I feel so bad for those of you who want to turn this precious and important bond between mother and child into something dirty and I might question where your own mother went wrong.. but oh wait, I already know- your mother didn't breastfeed you.

ma said...To those who do not want public breastfeeding at all, you are WRONG. You see more exposed breasts at the beach, then you see from a mom feeding her child God's way. There is nothing wrong with breastfeeding. If your upset by this, then don't look. If you see a mom breastfeeding her baby in a restaurant, don't suggest she use the rest room. How would you like to eat your dinner in the bathroom with people doing .......?

Brie said...I breastfeed in public, but discreatly and with the greatest respect for whoever was around. My daughter weaned off at 15 months and has had no ear infections, azthma or allergies. It is an amazing thing a mother can do for her child if it is possible.. We should all understand this, and respect both sides.

I in no way think that a woman nursing her baby in the mall or any place is considered nudity. I have seen many women bread feed their babies at the mall or a restaurant and they were very discret. What is a mother to do when she goes out and the baby wants something to eat, and they won't take a bottle. Not all nursed babies will take a bottle. Let's just give these mother's a break. Oh, and IMO no baby over the age of 2 needs to be on the breast, bottle, or a pacifer.

Thats ALMOST as bad as seeing a 5 year old with a pacifier or a 4 year old still in diapers..what in the hell has happened to parenting?????
