City council members in Forest Park, Ga., want theirs to be a town without ... well, let's just say it rhymes with "pity." Wouldn't want to offend anyone's delicate sensibilities. Neither would the councilors. So, that means no more breast-feeding in public.
Councilors passed a law May 16 in the Atlanta suburb against public nudity, which includes breast-feeding anyone older than 2.
City Manager John Parker tells the ABC affiliate in Atlanta this nips a potential wave of public nudity in the bud.
"It sets up a process whereby we can try to control nudity throughout the entire city," Parker tells the TV station.
Not if Regina M. Benjamin, the U.S. surgeon general, has anything to say about it. She supports this idea of women breast-feeding their children. Just four months ago, she released "The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Support Breast-Feeding."
"Many barriers exist for mothers who want to breast-feed," Benjamin said in her announcement in January. "They shouldn't have to go it alone. Whether you're a clinician, a family member, a friend or an employer, you can play an important part in helping mothers who want to breast-feed."
A federal law allows women to breast-feed in federal buildings or federal property.
Why, it's enough to make Southerner swoon.

Woo-hoo said...It's about time. Thank you! Breastfeeding two-year-olds is weird enough. Having to see it is even weirder.

Florence Brooks said...Children older than 1 1/2 can drink from a regular cup, they do not even need the "sippy" cover unless they are walking around with it. In days gone by, people ate and drank at the table, not walking around in stores, and every where else. How did everyone in this country get so dehydrated that they can not go anywhere without a cell phone in one hand and a drink of some sort in the other?

John said...So, let me get this straight....its perfectly fine for kids to see murder, death, destruction and suffering, even in their video games, but, God forbid, they should see something as perfectly natural as a woman breastfeeding her child? What the heck is wrong with this world?

jeanie w said...John its people like YOU and your way of thinking that is wrong with the world. What in hell does murder and mayhem have to do with some woman yanking a boob out in public? Where has DECENCY gone? THAT is the question here. I taught my daughter modesty. I breastfed both my children until they were old enough to drink out of a cup. They never had a bottle. They were both just over 14 months when I stopped breastfeeding and to this day I am appalled that women in todays world think its just fine to have a kid hanging on a boob for all the public to see..it is NOT FINE! Cover up for God's sake. You are out of line here!

jeanie w said...This crap just cracks me up...most 2 years old I know have a fairly good vocabulary..I can just imagine a kid 2 years old sucking away on the tit and then saying..."hey mom..yank out the other one..this one is dry!" Two year olds can drink out of glasses or at least the "Tommy Tippy" type cups for toddlers...and a 2 year old is not a "baby" that needs nursing..its a toddler. Geez people..get real..this IS sexual exploitation of a child. A woman who nurses kids 2 and older is just out for the thrill of it herself and even if none of her friends mention it to her, they think it and probably talk about her to others...I hope ALL cities follow this law.

Commenter said...I agree with most of that...come on, breastfeeding two-year-olds and older? Forcing the public to see that?
Thank you for this ordinance!

Really? said...They don't recommend we need to watch it happen. Yikes. Do we watch people pee in public? How about if I whip it out in front of everyone? Would that be okay?

sarah said...@ Hello... You must be some sort of genius. Do your research, consult the AAP and if you have anything intelligent to add do get back to me.

Hello... said...SARAH: Why don't you and the others who choose to go against the grain accept the fundamental fact that the majority of people would prefer that you breastfeed in private. Most breastfeeding women already have that respect.
As for breastfeeding two-year-olds and older.....YIKES. Sometimes common sense is in order and formal research isn't necessary.

bigpicture said...Breastfeeding is FEEDING A CHILD. You must be old enough to control your bodily functions long enough to get to a bathroom, or you wouldn't be typing on a computer. Bathrooms are for waste elimination. PEOPLE EAT IN PUBLIC.

Linda said...Breastfeeding is one of the most natural, beautiful things a woman can do. Anyone who tries to ban it is a moron......or a pervert. If you see breastfeeding as a sexual thing then you are definately a pervert. What do you think our ancestors did before baby bottles and formula? Think People!!

jeanie w said...Oh Linda for God's sake..nobody wants to BAN breastfeeding..they want to ban it in PUBLIC. Which is the decent thing to do. I breastfed both my children. If they were hungry when I wasn't home, I went to a restroom in a public place and then fed them..but even THERE I covered up their heads with a blanket..YOU are the moron my dear!!! No decent woman displays her breast in public. PERIOD!

falentj said...Eeeeew, you fed your children in a public bathroom. Do you want to eat off of a plate while it's sitting on a public toilet seat? Vile!!! Always sad when a woman's misplaced shame makes her feel the need to feed her baby in such a disgusting place.

oh my said...Breastfeeding is normal in the home. A bowl movement is also normal.....would you want to do or watch someone in public in the middle of any where to do it. Some things should only be done in private in the home.
