City council members in Forest Park, Ga., want theirs to be a town without ... well, let's just say it rhymes with "pity." Wouldn't want to offend anyone's delicate sensibilities. Neither would the councilors. So, that means no more breast-feeding in public.
Councilors passed a law May 16 in the Atlanta suburb against public nudity, which includes breast-feeding anyone older than 2.
City Manager John Parker tells the ABC affiliate in Atlanta this nips a potential wave of public nudity in the bud.
"It sets up a process whereby we can try to control nudity throughout the entire city," Parker tells the TV station.
Not if Regina M. Benjamin, the U.S. surgeon general, has anything to say about it. She supports this idea of women breast-feeding their children. Just four months ago, she released "The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Support Breast-Feeding."
"Many barriers exist for mothers who want to breast-feed," Benjamin said in her announcement in January. "They shouldn't have to go it alone. Whether you're a clinician, a family member, a friend or an employer, you can play an important part in helping mothers who want to breast-feed."
A federal law allows women to breast-feed in federal buildings or federal property.
Why, it's enough to make Southerner swoon.

Siobhan said...First off, didn't know changing tampons was a natural tendency, especially since not ALL or even most humans do so. Secondly, didn't know that eating was comparable to urinating or defecating. Sure, one leads to the other but I wouldn't want to eat where I sh.. nor would I want either getting mixed up so kind of seems like you're comparing apples to oranges here.

Woo-hoo said...There's a lot of things that are "normal" that we don't do in public. No one said it wasn't normal. We just don't want to see it in public.
If it's so normal to do it in public, why do more choose to do it in privacy? There's a reason.

It seems all these people that start all these different coming out of whats supposed to be ok is what has distroyed the family values. among other situations. I could go on but I don't want to get started anf further

And don't tell me parents arnt feeding them soft foods I know better I've heard so many moms say the doc says not now and they say I ingore it and feed them and they sleep better. You bet they do!!!
And I know 2 Doc's that feed there's. Either that or its a sexual thing they feel nursing so long and dont want to admit it to themselves look at 2 now whos kids are 6 and 8 YEARS!!! and still doing it if you cant stop at 1 year your gonna end up like them

I put it on video, so i have proof of what i saw. no one believed me until i showed the tape.

Sissy said...You TAPED it??? Are you for REAL??? It was TOTALLY unnecessary for you to tape it -- you're part of the reason why it's difficult to allow women to breast feed in public in the first place.... If you had been a gentleman, lady, or whatever you're supposed to be, you would have turned your head and looked the other way instead of TAPING it, you moron.

Barry said...You're right, Sissy. Only a "man" (not a gentleman, either) would tape such a thing. Another pig in the pen.

Siobhan said...And you don't think there's something really odd with the fact that you videotaped a mother breastfeeding her child, public or not? I don't think that's something you should probably admit to ;)

tj123123 said...omg.......what a place to feed the child. I hope she covered up. not all parents want their children watching. there are children of all ages sitting on that parade route, inculding the adult male children.

It's a shame they didn't kick you out of the park for filming her like some demented pervert.

Dr. Dreisdale said...For you people who are too dense to comprehend, the "line" is drawn where exposure of the body triggers a sexual response in the MAJORITY. Jeepers Creepers, how dumb can you folks be? Men are basically immature emotionally and sexually, and the visual of female breasts, particularly the areola and nipple, triggers a sexual response, which our society believes should be curtailed for obvious reasons. So knock it off with the doltish comments about men's nipples and the innocence of breast-feeding.... Grow up and open your eyes to the truth and the value of propriety in attempting to maintain a civilized society given the imperfections and pitfalls of human beings. Yeeeesh.

orlenda said...So because men cant keep it in their pants, woman have to hide in dirty dark places to breastfeed?
5-19-2011 @ 10:38PM
Summer said...I really think you're missing th boat, Orlenda. It's not about men keeping it in their pants. I've had kids and it's NOT a problem to feed outside of public view. Are you SERIOUS? It's so stupid to make like you MUST take your boobs out wherever you are to feed on the spot. The public isn't a bunch of dummies, so don't try to pull that stuff here, lady.
5-19-2011 @ 11:13PM
Dr. Dreisdale said...Thanks for underscoring my point, Summer. And to Orlenda: Who told you to go to a dark, dirty place to feed your kids? By all means, go somewhere CLEAN, but just out of PUBLIC view.... It's not a difficult concept, my dear. It's not all about the needs of a few; what's right for the MAJORITY is what counts. Whether you manage to comprehend the reasons for such bans is irrelevant. But I suggest you make a concerted effort to think of others rather than pretending you only have two choices:
1. You absolutely MUST breastfeed whenever and wherever you happen to be;
2. You are relegated to breastfeeding in dark, dirty public restrooms.
People just aren't that stupid, lady.
