Teacher Suspended for Allegedly Making Kids Scrub Toilet

Outrageous, right?
You shouldn't have to scrub toilets that hard until you're an adult.
The London Daily Mail reports Catherine Saur, an art teacher at Kennelly Elementary School in Hartford, Conn., allegedly has some cleanliness issues. Whenever one of her students had to use the potty, she supposedly made the child clean the porcelain. Thoroughly.
This went for two years, the Mail reports, until some parents had enough. Now Saur is under suspension while school authorities investigate parents' complaints.
Those complaints include horror stories of kids peeing their pants to avoid going to the bathroom and one child who suffered a severe allergic reaction to the bleach he was required to use to clean the toilet.
That child's mother was incensed that her boy was ordered to clean a toilet.
"That's the custodian's job," the Daily Mail quotes her from a meeting at the school.
School district spokesman Dave Medina tells the Daily Mail the district doesn't comment on personnel matters. Saur declines to comment.
Not everyone thinks Saur is a heartless fiend. The Daily Mail reports PTA Secretary Nancy Moreaux spoke poetically in defense of Saur at the same school meeting.
"If you sprinkle when you tinkle," she said, "please be neat and wipe the seat."

Sue said...I wish someone would have gotten my first grade teacher in trouble for something similiar! I went to a one room country school with a boys and a girls bathroom and cloak room at the back of the room. Someone had peed on the bathroom floor and the teacher, Mrs. Bacon (I will never forget her name or face, sixty years later) assumed that it was me. She called me in from recess and stood over me and made me clean up the mess, with paper towels! I remember telling my parents, but as far as I know, they never did anything about it. I was not very outgoing after that! I don't know why she didn't like me, except that in the first grade, I was able to read my brothers third grade reader and also do his math problems! I think she was tryiing to hold me back, lucky for all of us 60 students, she only taught there for one year!

When my youngest daughter was put in her class I had to take her to the doctor. He said my daughter was not the first child he had had to put on medication because of this teacher. But when she is reported the other faculty covers her butt. She even taunts the children calling them crybabies and asking them "what are you going to do? Go home and tell mommy? Tell mommy and daddy to come see me, I'm not afraid of them." Her husband teaches at the highschool, he covers her sorry butt also.

MB said...A little work never hurt anyone..If parents taught their kids how to clean up after themselves instead of just doing it for them, they wouldn't have to scrub. Throughout school, we were always forced to clean the tables at lunch, vacuum, clean our desks, help the teacher pack up their room, etc. Of course my first thought was always "why doesn't the janitor do this? He's the one getting paid". Well... I was always told that the teacher or the janitor isn't your mother and its not their job to pick up after you. You pick up after yourself...When you know BETTER you do BETTER.

Denise said...When I walk into a stall in the ladies room, and the person before me has peed all over the seat I consider them a cow. Only cows would pee where ever they are and not clean up. Everyone should clean up after themselves, children included. If these children didn't dirty the seat they shouldn't have to clean it.

Dan said...I know of a person who is a custodian in an elementary school. Some of the stories are pretty discusting, Things link poop smeared on the wall, urine sprayed all over the wall and floor graffitti with words that can't be posted here. . Is it possible that the same thing was happening at this school? If the kids are made to clean up after themselves (only themselves as the story claims) maybe, just maybe kids would think twice before doing a poo smear, gaffiti, etc on the walls. Sad to say but kids bathroom ettiquette is quite different than it was 20 years ago.

Emma said...I'm a college student and I lived in a dorm last year. It was an all girl dorm. The two maids did a really good job of cleaning up but I was astounded by lack of home training that people showed. People would make messes in the lobby and the maid would clean up after them. The maids didn't work on the weekends so the bathrooms were disgusting. People would dump food in the sink, smear hair dye everywhere, pee all over the seat, stop up the toilets, throw toilet paper everywhere, leave wrappers everywhere, and leave their stuff everywhere. Its the maid's job to sanitize the showers and toilets and take the trash out, not to pick up your mess. Teach your kids the right thing to do when they are young!!!!

bikermama61 said...I am a teacher in an Elementary school. The ONLY time I EVER mad a child clean a toilet was when one purposely pooopied on the lid. I sprayed the cleaner AND i gave him gloves. I in no way agree with what this person did and would NEVER make kids clean the toilet on a regular basis. (and I am an Art teacher) There are other, more appropriate ways to punish kids.

MotorCityMama said...Have you lost your mind? Making kids clean the toilet after every use? Do YOU clean the toilet ever? Children are to go to school to learn, not to be enslaved custodians. Because they use the bathroom properly and do not scrub after every use does NOT make them brats. My guess is you hate kids, animals, and most of the world, as well as suffer from some mental disorder. Please call your local mental health facility for immediate admission. I bet they don't make you clean the toilet there.

The toilets are plugged and broke. The carpets are amess and even the doors are all messed up. I am an adult American and love America, but young Americans are downright hateful and that is why we Americans are hated all over the world. Why should we teach kids self responsibility, poor kids!

These kids go around with their pants hanging down their butts, the girls show all their wares, it's no wonder they don't graduate.

Pauline said...I am wondering what kind of teachers there are these days. It's doubtful that this teacher is innocent. It's one thing to tell children to wipe off the seat after using a commode and telling them to scrub it with cleanser. It is the job of the custodian. The last I heard it's their job. For someone to defend this teacher is another example of trying to excuse lack of feeling in this woman. I do hope she's suspended for a long time and made to take a class in the true care of children.
