Miracle Baby Born After Being Carried Outside Uterus
Filed under: In The News
The term "miracle baby" doesn't even begin to describe the birth of Nicky Soto's baby boy, Azlen Cruz Perfecto.
At 18 weeks into her pregnancy, doctors discovered the Phoenix woman's fetus was growing outside her uterus, in the lining of her abdominal muscles, "Today" reports. They warned her the pregnancy could kill her.
But Soto, 27, already a mom to a 7-year-old son, decided to keep the baby.
"There was the fact that this was maybe my only chance to carry another child," she tells "Today." "If this didn't go right and we had to remove the uterus, I wouldn't be able to carry again. I was hoping for the best."
The news show reports the pregnancy was so rare, doctors aren't even sure if a baby has ever been delivered following a case like this.
"Our biggest concern was what it would be attached to and where the blood supply came from," Dr. Curtis Cook, Soto's surgeon, tells "Today."
Dr. William Clewell, who was also involved in the case, tells the Phoenix CBS affiliate no one at Banner Good Samaritan Hospital had ever seen anything like this.
"And in checking the literature, we weren't able to turn up any cases comparable," he tells the station.
According to the news show, the C-section birth at 32 weeks went off as planned May 23, and although Azlen was born eight weeks early, the boy is doing great.
"I'm so thankful for all their hard work," Soto tells "Today." "They didn't give up on my son. They followed my wishes to continue the pregnancy even though it was risky. It was something we all had to go through together."

5 years ago my tubal failed and 32 weeks later - our little boy was delivered via C-sec. because he was outside the uterus. We both are lucky to be alive. (My OB. said he's only seen that 1 other time, and both mom and baby died in delivery)

And from the way the article reads that baby could have died even with her chancing her own life because they did not know where food and blood and everything that unborn baby needs to survive was coming from.

The only problem he has (that I know of) is he can't have any immunizations. The shots have a bigger chance of killing him than actually getting the diseases.

And as for my kids I would save there lives over mine since they have life , but if an unborn baby that they never met except through sonograms could kill me and they would become foster children because my husband drives truck and would not be home to give them the life they need alone, the baby would be terminated unless they gave me only a very slim and low chance of it killing me. In other words, it could kill you but it is a very rare chance it would. Where she got a very high chance of it killing her.

I was medically involved in a delivery by c/section of a 30-wk baby where he grew outside the uterus AND survived. The mother also survived, but not w/o significant blood loss due to uncontrolled bleeding following delivery of the baby. These babies can be delivered successfully by C/Sect., but not w/o having blood available in the operating room to resuscitate the mother, secondary to massive blood loss. The baby also has to be at least 24 wks gestation at time of delivery to even have a chance of survival.

Fortunately, most of us will not have to make such a drastic choice in our lives, but all of the comments have reminded me of the very last episode of the TV show MASH. At lot of you won't remember the show, but it was 70s show about medical personnel in a war zone in Korea during the 50s. In the last episode, the MASH unit is evacuating along with Korean civilians because the North Korean army has breached the front lines and they are in great danger. They are on a stopped bus, sitting in pitch darkness, completely quiet as they know the enemy is all around them. One of the Korean women is holding her baby on her lap and it begins to cry. She does everything she can to muffle the sound, but it is still audible--and she smothers her baby to silence it. No doubt this woman would have died herself to save her baby--but when faced with causing the death of a whole busload of people, she sacrificed her child. As mothers we all want to think we would do what is best for our child , but none of us knows what we would do unless we are in the situation. I doubt this woman (the one in the article) was faced with the real possibility of dying. I would be willing to bet that had it come down to "you WILL die before morning if you continue this pregnancy" she would have chosen her life and the well-being of her living 7 year old. At least I hope so...

Keep your PRO BIRTH stances. As I left for the hospital, the last thing I heard was my 3 year old daughter crying, "Mommy, mommy please don't DIE." My daughter is now 32 years old and still remember this. Just imagine how she would have felt if her Mommy did die and she had a "cute little baby sister or brother." I can tell you what she, and other children, would say to that sibling. "You KILLED Mommy." You want YOUR already born children to live with this, be my guest. I care more about my ALREADY BORN kids.
