Researchers Say Caffeine May Cause Infertility

MSNBC reports researchers have discovered caffeine reduces activity of the muscles in the fallopian tubes, which carry a woman's eggs from her ovaries to her womb.
The result? No babies.
"Caffeine inhibits the contractions of the muscles in the fallopian tube, so the egg stops getting transported," lead researcher Sean Ward of the University of Nevada School of Medicine tells MSNBC.
If the eggs aren't delivered to the womb, a woman will either have an unsuccessful pregnancy or be at risk for an ectopic pregnancy (when the embryo gets stuck and develops in the woman's fallopian tube), he adds.
MSNBC reports researchers studied the effect of caffeine on the fallopian tubes of mice, who have reproductive systems similar to humans. (That explains why Mickey and Minnie Mouse have been together for 83 years but don't have any children.)
Ward tells MSNBC the mice got the amount of caffeine equivalent to a couple of cups of coffee. Still, much more research is needed to determine how much caffeine is necessary to impair fertility in humans, he adds.
Caffeine affects everybody in different ways, and therefore may affect people's fertility differently, Ward tells the network.
"It depends on the person -- how long caffeine affects you, and then the downstream effects as well," he says.

Key said...One minute caffeine is okay to drink.. the next it's not. I don't drink coffee anyway and I try not to consume drinks with caffeine in them. But c'mon now, infertility..? Next thing ryou know they'll be saying bologna causes cancer and sugar causes blindness.
Gimme a break. Test this theory on P-E-O-P-L-E.. and THEN inform the public. SMH

GAIL COOPER said...From my own personal experience, this research does have some merit. I donate blood and was told by the medical technicians that caffeine affects the body's ability to absorb iron. Within the last two years, I moved across the street from a coffee shop and began drinking coffee almost everyday. I take vitamin & mineral supplements regularly and my iron count dropped too low to donate blood. I also noticed that my periods had almost stopped. When I stopped drinking coffee everyday, my iron count normalized and my periods returned. I sincerely believe my hormones levels have changed due to menopause and what I eat/drink has a greater impact on my reproductive system. When I was younger, I had no reproductive issues and my periods came and went like clock work. Now things have changed and I pay much more attention to what I eat/drink to make sure my body is absorbing the necessary nutrients because over the counter vitamin/mineral supplements may not be enough.

Princess said...Like most people here I'm a caffeine addict. I drink about 3 gallons a tea a day by myself. I've been drinking tea and soda for as long as I can remember. I've had four kids naturally. My friends brother jokes that he doesn't even like hugging me or shaking my hand because I'll get pregnant.
