Fever During Pregnancy May Cause Rise in Austim Risk

HealthDay reports a number of new studies were presented at the recent International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR) in San Diego, and, in addition to the fever study, researchers also found C-section births aren't associated with autism, but pregnant women with high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes are at risk.
According to the news service, about one in 110 children in the United States has an autism spectrum disorder, and research shows autism diagnoses are rising, while some studies also suggest a rise in the actual number of autism cases, too.
"Autism is an incredibly complex disorder than now affects nearly 1 percent of children," IMFAR President David Amaral tells HealthDay.
In one study, researchers looked at reports from women who had influenza or fevers during pregnancy, the news service reports, and discovered those who had kids diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder were almost two times more apt to have reported a fever during pregnancy than those who did not have autistic children. Fever during the second trimester seemed to raise the risk even more, HealthDay adds.
In another study, researchers found children of mothers who had diabetes -- both Type 2 and gestational -- chronic hypertension and pre-pregnancy obesity were at a "significant" risk of having a child with autism or a developmental delay, according to HealthDay.
And, in another study, the news service reports, researchers looking at autism in connection to C-sections found no link.
Research presented at meetings should be considered preliminary, HealthDay notes.

How many kids with low IQs are being called "autistic?" I'm not say everyone labelled "autistic" is actually retarded or just stupid. I'm just wondering who might be getting included in that group that might be distorting the figures.

Jessica said...That's not to far off actually. The DSM (the psychiatric bible of diagnosis) revised their definition of autism in the 80s from only applying to severely non-functional children, to covering a 'spectrum' from mildly affected (the kids people usd to say were 'a little off' or 'not good with people, but good kids') to what has always been considered autistic (the classic can't talk, don't realize other people are in the room, etc.).
So some of the rise in autisim diagnosis is definitely caused by the change in what is considered autism. The most recent studies seem to show that there is an actual rise in autism cases, not just diagnosis, so at at least some of the increase in autism is actually there.

Since it is virtually impossible for a person to go 9 months without a fever at least once, or contend with the natural fluctuations in body temp where the temp rises, but there is no illness, I'm guessing this means that ALL of our kids are autistic. I suppose this DOES take the guess work out of it....

I saw some study results about a decade ago, in I believe, Holland. I no longer have the exact details from so long ago. They handled immunizations very differently than we do. They spaced them out and didn't start so young. Guess what? They had the same percentage of diagnosed Autistic people as we did. Hmmmm!
There is a possibility that there are multiple causes of Autism. Scientists have already found certain genetic markers in a substantial number of Autistic people, but not in all. If damage or a malfunction occur in a certain area, it will most likely express itself in similar ways, regardless of how it happened.
Let's stop the finger pointing and panic once and for all. We need to support solid Scientific research and focus on providing a better quality of life for those that already have to deal with Autism every day. Especially keeping in mind the adults who have exited the school system.

It is all natural and works like nothing I have ever used. Mosquitoes, fire ants, ticks, fleas, roaches - even bed bugs! No harmful side effects - Greenbug is so safe it is EPA exempt! Get it online by googling greenbugallnatural

He says there's no way that genetically, kids could change that fast (becoming more and more autistic in 10-20 year span) but blames it on the lack of sensory/motor-type stimuli and how it leads to developmental delays and synchronicity issues between the left and right brain hemispheres. He gives tests and even exercises to do at home to help your child improve. And no, I don't sell his stuff. I'm an adult and have suspected I have ADD or AS for some time, and I'm testing abnormally in a lot of areas in his tests. It's really amazing. My spouse and others around me do not have these issues.

That, and trying to stay in shape can mean less nutrients, but then it's NO good to be TOO fat either? Isn't it nice how they tried to take the blame away from women for stuff and turn around and blame EVERYTHING on them agian?

Isn't it nice how they tried to take some of the blame away from mom and then turn right around and put everything on her again, for everything? Glad I never wanted children!
