Santa Monica Latest City to Fight to Get Circumcision Ban on Ballot
Filed under: In The News

The New York Times reports "intactivists" are fighting for a similar ballot issue in Santa Monica, arguing that the procedure is "male genital mutilation."
"This is the furthest we've gotten, and it is a huge step for us," Matthew Hess, who wrote both bills, tells the newspaper, adding that folks in other cities have been calling for help, as well. "This is a conversation we are long overdue to have in this country. The end goal for us is making cutting boys' foreskin a federal crime."
The ballot measures are of concern to Jewish groups, according to The Times, as circumcision is a requirement of Jewish law.
"People are shocked that it has reached this level because there has never been this kind of a direct assault on a Jewish practice here," Marc Stern, associate general counsel for the American Jewish Committee, tells the newspaper. "This is something that American Jews have always taken for granted -- that something that was so contested elsewhere but here, we're safe and we're secure."
Jena Troutman, however, a mom of two boys who is promoting the Santa Monica measure and runs the website wholebabyrevolution.com, tells The Times it's not about religion.
"I am just a mom trying to save the little babies," she tells the newspaper. "I'd rather be on the beach, but nobody is talking about this, so I have to."
Circumcision procedures have been dropping in the United States, The Times reports, with 30 to 50 percent of infant males getting snipped.
Family physician Dr. David Baron tells the newspaper trying to ban circumcision is "ridiculous and dishonest."
"To say it is mutilation is wrong from the get-go," Baron tells The Times. "It is a perfectly valid decision to say that it is not what you want for your child. Any doctor who says it is needed is not being honest, but to say that it needs to be banned is shocking."

Moishe said...To say it has nothing to do with religious discrimination is disingenuous. To say that it's done without the child's consent and will alter them forever, is a fallacious argument.
There are a lot of things done without a child's consent that will alter them forever, including bad parenting.
When you combine this with anti-Kosher legislation, what can one deduce from this.
The same folks against circumcision would be screaming if tattooing or body-piercing were banned. These things are much worse in my opinion, because these self-effacing, etc. Noone flashes their circumcisions in your face and says accept it or else.

Woo-hoo said...Circumcism and body tattooing and piercing minors should be banned. It's about a defensive child's right to make their own decisions when they choose to.

alexandre69 said...A person can get over bad parenting in life through therapy. But a male cannot reverse circumcision. It is appalling that these decisions are being made without the consent of children. Let them decide when they are older if they want the procedure. And it is NOT an attack on Judaism. And people need to "get over" this argument as well. And what's more, is what the cosmetic industry does and makes money off of the foreskin, using it in skin cream in the form or fibreblasts. Yeah that's right, it's also a racket-scheme making them about 100,000.00 for each foreskin. Religion? C'mon! Let male choose for themselves later on, instead of leaving them with no choice at all.

Steven said...The people who are for banning circumcision are probably against banning abortions because it is the politically correct thing to do. Abortions are far worse than circumcision because an unborn child's life is being destroyed. If these people REALLY want to save the children, they'd be campaigning to stop abortions.

Woo-hoo said...Steven,
Believing in pro choice and believing in abortions are two different things. It is a women's right to control her own body. Call that what you want. Personally, I believe in pro choice and do not believe in abortion. That's the mom's decision though.

anni said...Alex69: yeah, Dr's all over the country are shoving foreskins in their pockets and selling them! You are twisted. And who wants to look at an uncirumcised dick. Not any girl I know. Sorry, when they are older they won't want to do it because of pain, unless they get nasty infections they cannot live with.

SciMjr said...This whole issue is sheer udder nonsense! Should I get my 5 year old's permission to get her a vaccination shot? Should we let our children decide if they should get braces to fix their teeth?
How about this ... my little boy DOESN'T want to wear a helmet while riding a bike ... but there is a LAW that says he has to ... so it should be his choice right? Just like wearing a seat belt, going to school ... we should just have our kids and let them run amuck because that is the decision that THEY chose to make?
People are stupid!

Concerning rights... said...David, what's more apalling are people telling women that they are not allowed to control their own bodies, to include abortions. When you get pregnant yourself, maybe you should make that decision for women.

Cyn said...First of all, comparing this to female genital mutilation is INSULTING to the women who have undergone that practice. Those girls usually undergo such procedures in unclean places, without any form of disinfection or anasthesia. (Often, the mutilation happens outside.) They are perforned by people with zero medical training and ALL OF THEIR ABILITY TO ENJOY SEXUAL CONTACT is removed. Their clitoris is completely removed, along with all of the outer part of their genitals, then the sides are drawn together and sewn shut, (sometimes with dirty thread or THORNS). They are left with a TINY opening, near their vagina, so that they often have trouble urinating -- often only passing drops at a time. Afterwards they are often left to care for themselves, far from their families and in the wild, despite the fact that they are children. Then they must make their way home, after they have healed. -- if they don't DIE from infection!
The goal is to remove the ability for women to enjoy sex and, oftentimes, these women find sex to be extremely painful, for the rest of their lives. This practice is widely used by Muslims and the fact of the matter is that the Koran DOES NOT insruct that this practice should take place. The only goal is to make sure that women do not enjoy sex, in order to control them and reassure their male partners. After all, why would a woman stray if she finds sex to be painful? It's disgusting, controlling and TRUE MUTILATION.
So, NO, I don't think that circumcision is comparable AT ALL and I think that anyone who makes the comparison is a moron.

John said...To alexander, or whoever thinks it is okay to ban. What about doctor visits, the child does not give permission for that, how about childhood shots, same thing no permission. Think again about what you are saying.

Merrily said...I don't have a religious reason but as a woman, it is very disgusting when you find out a man is NOT circumcised. In all of my 68 years, this was the first time I had ever known someone was not circumcised and it was very off-putting.
I can understand some people not wanting it done, but why ban it when there are people who want to have it done birth. Ask any man who has had it done later in life, it isn't a bit fun. No matter when, there is going to be pain involved.
If and when I ever start dating again, that will be my first question!

Jean Bailey said...Anni, what is the purpose of foreskin, then, if they're already a part of the anatomy? I'm against piercing a child's ears? Ever see a baby a few months old with pierced ears? I mean, what's up with that!!!!?

Regina said...This really isn't just about religeous practices in America now. I took an informal poll of a large group of men and women at work and all the men (all but 2 were non-Jewish) said they were circumcised and didn't remember a thing...no pain. One woman said her husband had not been circumcised when she met him and she would not perform oral sex on him because of it (smell, possible bacteria collection under foreskin, etc) so he had an adult circumcision and said he wished his parents had done it for him when he wouldn't remember the pain. All the women in the group said they agreed with the woman, that they wouldn't have oral sex with an uncircumcised man. Before any man votes for such a rediculous ban, they ought to know that!

Jim said...To whohoo: Your post is moroninc. Would you allow a six year old to play on a busy street or highway because it was their decision? Does a baby get to decide wether it wants to breast feed or not?
Does a baby decide what it wants to eat? I don't think so! But your post say it would be okay.

Evelyn said...Both Woo-hoo and alexendre...are clueless when it comes to parenting, like too many of today's parents are also.
Bad parenting cannot necessarily be corrected by therapy. Many times it is never fixed, and the child leads a bad life well into adulthood.
As for circumcision, it is just one of the choices that parents must make, either way, since it is one of many responsibilities that parents will face until the child is an adult.
Stop with this nonsense of continuing efforts to undermine parenting which has been going on for thousands of years.

David said...This is the dumbest damn thing I've ever seen on a ballot!! All you people who are concerned about foreskins should be just as concerned with unborn male children who are killed with out their permission!! What about the poor foreskin that will die when the kid is cut up and sucked out of it's mothers womb? Some of you are just freaking mental. Now this is a sign of that the end is near. The MORONS have taken over!!!!
