Santa Monica Latest City to Fight to Get Circumcision Ban on Ballot
Filed under: In The News

The New York Times reports "intactivists" are fighting for a similar ballot issue in Santa Monica, arguing that the procedure is "male genital mutilation."
"This is the furthest we've gotten, and it is a huge step for us," Matthew Hess, who wrote both bills, tells the newspaper, adding that folks in other cities have been calling for help, as well. "This is a conversation we are long overdue to have in this country. The end goal for us is making cutting boys' foreskin a federal crime."
The ballot measures are of concern to Jewish groups, according to The Times, as circumcision is a requirement of Jewish law.
"People are shocked that it has reached this level because there has never been this kind of a direct assault on a Jewish practice here," Marc Stern, associate general counsel for the American Jewish Committee, tells the newspaper. "This is something that American Jews have always taken for granted -- that something that was so contested elsewhere but here, we're safe and we're secure."
Jena Troutman, however, a mom of two boys who is promoting the Santa Monica measure and runs the website wholebabyrevolution.com, tells The Times it's not about religion.
"I am just a mom trying to save the little babies," she tells the newspaper. "I'd rather be on the beach, but nobody is talking about this, so I have to."
Circumcision procedures have been dropping in the United States, The Times reports, with 30 to 50 percent of infant males getting snipped.
Family physician Dr. David Baron tells the newspaper trying to ban circumcision is "ridiculous and dishonest."
"To say it is mutilation is wrong from the get-go," Baron tells The Times. "It is a perfectly valid decision to say that it is not what you want for your child. Any doctor who says it is needed is not being honest, but to say that it needs to be banned is shocking."

Manly said...Hey, what's wrong with being uncircumcised? You can play peekaboo with the head. By the way, this idea of making circumcision a federal crime is about as ludicrous as it gets. It just shows you that these left wing morons in S.F. and Santa Monica don't even have half a brain among them. Let the parents decide if they want their sons circumcised. Stop trying to make the Federal Government take care of you and control your lives. This country is about freedom, not living by some twisted liberals idea of utopia!! And to those women who don't like uncircumcised penises, don't judge until you've tried one.

Liz said...My boyfriend is circumcised. Is he Jewish? No. Does he remember the process? No. Has it altered his life? No. Another stupid thing to argue about. I think it's a perfectly fine decision for parents to make. Why would males get it done later it life? It would hurt worse and they would remember it! Parents pierce their kids ears! I don't see anything wrong with that but I'm sure some will argue it's child abuse. I wish people would quit being stupid and worry about things that actually matter. Volunteer your time somewhere else instead of your worthless ideas.

Fran said...I've had several uncircumcised lovers in my lifetime, including my first. There was nothing whatsoever "eeeww" about it as long as they practiced regular personal hygiene (i.e., showering daily). In fact, in my experience these men had greater sensitivity and enjoyed sex more than average, since their mucous membranes were not constantly being chafed and deadened by contact with clothing. And manual stimulation by a partner was easier, since there is something to move up and down.

Victor said...If the Jewish community wants to circumcise their little boys that's fine by me but let the other boys who are not Jewish alone. For a time the medical profession was circumcising boys for "medical reasons." It has been proven that uncircumsiced boys are no more in danger of infection or desease than circumsiced boys. I'm uncircumseced and I've never had a medical problem with it. Stop mutilating boys.

ComNsense said...Victor, your unintelligent statement shows your complete lack of knowledge - NO ONE forces any baby to get circumcised, it's 100% choice and if the Jewish community chooses it then it's done. No doctor is standing in the dark corridors waiting to circumcise innocent children so by saying "Stop mutilating boys" is beyond incorrect and just stupid.

me said...Your parents had the choice to have the circumcision done or not, and that choice should continue. While you're right, it used to be pushed by even outside the Jewish community for hygiene reasons, and those claims cannot be backed up, you can't call it mutilation. People like to use that word, but circumcised penises are not destroyed, do not lack function or have a degraded appearance. The foreskin that is removed is not a limb or some other important body part. It is a painful procedure and not medically necessary, but it doesn't not constitute child abuse as opponents suggest.

Ken said...The issue isn't forcing people to circumcise their kids, the issue is mandating people do NOT. As the major reason for this procedure is a religious one, and as the constitution FORBIDS the government from passing laws preventing the free exercise of one's religion, this will not go far. The idea that this is mutulation is simply rediculous.

Lloyd said...Remember that circumcision is also required by Islam. A study made in 1927 showed that Muslim women in Calcutta (now part of Bangla Desh) did not get cervical cancer while Hindu women did. A similar study shortly after that in Brooklyn showed that Jewish women did not get cervical cancer. The common thread there was that the women who did not get the cancer were married to circumcised men.

Jud said...Victor, you must be one of the men whose brains are in their foreskin. It is not only Jewish people that have over thousands of years have been circumcised. Check it out buddy. Most men do not clean themselves well enough and if you have ever seen men that do not keep their foreskin clean it is something you will never forget. (I am a medical person) Circumcised males are cleaner in this area of their body and wait till you want to be with a woman, many will not have sex with uncircumcised men, My daughters included. For health reasons alone circumcision should be done and for religious reasons,California and other states need to butt out. It is a well known fact that circumcised males have better sex than others. Ask your friends. It is much easier to do the procedure when the male is an infant than when they are adults. The recovery is far faster and less blood loss than adults. Check out why males get circumcised as adults besides phimosis, which is the foreskin getting so tight over the penis that it is very painful and and causes terrible swelling which does not go down and they thave to do circumcision as an adult. Oh by the way, make sure that you do not get a Chinese circuncision. Some of the older doctors from China have done them with part of the foreskin still attached and hanging down. Very strange. Many have come back to have them revised by removing that flap of skin hanging. With all the problems of California, I hope the voters are smart enough to vote this down and the cities need to focus on other ways of revenue. I know many people that will not give birth in San Francisco if this passes. And hospitals need all the patients they can get to keep them open.
