Santa Monica Latest City to Fight to Get Circumcision Ban on Ballot
Filed under: In The News
Credit: Francisco Seco, AP
The New York Times reports "intactivists" are fighting for a similar ballot issue in Santa Monica, arguing that the procedure is "male genital mutilation."
"This is the furthest we've gotten, and it is a huge step for us," Matthew Hess, who wrote both bills, tells the newspaper, adding that folks in other cities have been calling for help, as well. "This is a conversation we are long overdue to have in this country. The end goal for us is making cutting boys' foreskin a federal crime."
The ballot measures are of concern to Jewish groups, according to The Times, as circumcision is a requirement of Jewish law.
"People are shocked that it has reached this level because there has never been this kind of a direct assault on a Jewish practice here," Marc Stern, associate general counsel for the American Jewish Committee, tells the newspaper. "This is something that American Jews have always taken for granted -- that something that was so contested elsewhere but here, we're safe and we're secure."
Jena Troutman, however, a mom of two boys who is promoting the Santa Monica measure and runs the website wholebabyrevolution.com, tells The Times it's not about religion.
"I am just a mom trying to save the little babies," she tells the newspaper. "I'd rather be on the beach, but nobody is talking about this, so I have to."
Circumcision procedures have been dropping in the United States, The Times reports, with 30 to 50 percent of infant males getting snipped.
Family physician Dr. David Baron tells the newspaper trying to ban circumcision is "ridiculous and dishonest."
"To say it is mutilation is wrong from the get-go," Baron tells The Times. "It is a perfectly valid decision to say that it is not what you want for your child. Any doctor who says it is needed is not being honest, but to say that it needs to be banned is shocking."

kimcrdr said...this is for comNsense: when I had my son the dr. said, he has to be circumsized..I asked why the Dr. said oh it is necessary, It could cause infections, well I am glad I held my own told the Dr. no my son was not getting circumsized, he is not jewish, my family is not jewish, My son has lived a great life and is still living, he is married and has kids of his own. I donot think they should try to regulate it in politics but it is up to the mother of the boy.

Big10 said...Jud, it's sad you have to trot out your daughters to justify your lack of "manhood". Maybe if you had been given a choice at birth, you wouldn't be on such an angry tirade trying to make every male out there to be just like you: puny and small.

Tracie Smith said...Yet ANOTHER area the government wants to tell parents what they can and can't do with THEIR own kids...IT'S NONE OF THE GOVERNMENT'S BUSINESS!!!!
When you have it done at birth...the baby is not going to remember it...wait till he's 18? UM!!! Chances ARE he WON'T have it done...too painful.
I am SO sick of government intrusion into our everyday private decisions and lives...LEAVE US ALONE!!!!

BRUCE said...VERY WELL said Tracie!!!! If a parent for whatever reason feels they want it done to their son that is their business and or perogative. Funny we don't see anybody bitching and moaning at all the little girls with pierced ears.

cleo said...You are 100% right on this one Tracie! I think the parents are the ones that make this decision not the government!
How many people support killing unborn babies without government consent but yet they want the government to decide for them if circumcision is legal or not?
OMG!!!!! YOu people are so screwed up!
Just keep letting the government decide and pass laws for you...you may think nothing of it but soon youwon't have any rights to worry about!
Illegal circumcision? It's the parents decision not the governments!

Meg said...While I agree that this matter should not be left up to the government, it is not currently a government issue. It is a 'we the people' issue - you know; of the people, by the people, for the people ... which they are trying to add to the government's agenda by adding it to the ballot for 'we the people' to vote on. It only becomes part of government if the people vote yes. So, for now, don't blame it on the government. They didn't ask for it, and they certainly don't need it.

Laurie said...Same with two of my family members. One had to have it done at the age of 44 because of the tightening of the foreskin and pain and splitting that caused by that. The other decided to do it at the age of 16 to avoid what was happening to his dad. If I'd known the liklihood of that happening later in life without circumcision, there never would have been a question as to whether to have it done as a newborn. Hopefully there are enough medical experts who see the medical reasons to avoid allowing allowing it to be on any ballot. I wish I'd known there were medical reasons and that it wasn't just a religious consideration...

Missy said...If they are banning this then were is the ban on piercing little girls' ears when they are babies? There has been proven medical reasons, health reasons and of course religious. Stabing a baby's ears with a piece of metal has none of those reasons behind it but it's just fine for someone to do that.

RRSilverShadow said...I have had it both ways. I was not circumcised at birth as my parents were of European ancestry. At age 14 I had to have a circumcision to correct a problem with adhesion of the foreskin. Having experienced it both ways, I would never want to be uncircumcised again, and if I had sons, I would have them circumcised at birth. Being uncircumcised requires a lot of attention to keep everything constantly clean and to be honest, a lot of uncircumcised men do not keep themselves as clean as they should. I read some statistics not long ago, that STDs are more prevalent with uncircumcised men which makes sense to me. Having a foreskin may be nature's original plan, but I think man found a way to improve on it. Circumcision is a personal choice of the parents and should not be changed by a law. Keep your laws out of my groin!

CTGnHSV said...I am sorry for what you had to go through. That is quite the ordeal.
But I have to say, I love your line, "Keep your laws our of my groin!" I wholeheartedly agree with you. For some of the same reasons I have frequently said, "Keep your laws out of my uterus!"
It should be parents' prerogative: if you, as a parent, want to leave your child uncircumcised until he can make his own decision, then do so. If you have beliefs otherwise, be they founded in religious belief, medical research, or personal experience, then do so. Just don't do either blindly. Educate yourself on the whole picture. A doctor or a law should not dictate the decision for you.

Who Oui said...Tell all of us how far you'd have gotten had your parents had you and left you at the bus stop? There is ownership here; we have the right to name the child, they get our last names, we feed them what we want, we buy them the clothe we want to buy them, we send them to the schools we pick. Then, thankfully, ownership comes to an end and, if we're lucky enough, all this time a friendship has been building and now we're extremely close friends. But there is no question of ownership...go ahead and try to name your neighbor's kid.

Jonathan said...Actually parents DO own their children and have the right to do with their children as they please so long as they don't kill them, neglect them nor physically harm them in any way. Circumcision is none of these things and the government should have NO right to tell parents what to do with regards to their own children. It is insane to ban circumcision until 18 because it's a painful experience that if done when the child is young won't be remembered but would be remembered (if done at all) when they are older. Just one more instance of the government thinking they have the right to micromanage people's lives. Whatever happened to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness??

David said...Woo hoo, do you mean "owning your kids" like deciding to prevent them from being born? Apparently the folks pushing this ban think it is okay to kill a child, but not to circumcize.

Steve said...I was circumcised as an infant and decided that my son would be able to make his own choice. A few years ago, for medical reasons, he had to be circumcised. Other options were available, but my son wanted the circumcision. Banning juvenile circumcision would have made a criminal of a 12 year old who just wanted to eliminate a constant source of pain. Male genital mutilation involves removing the sensitive tissue at the head of the penis, not the foreskin. Catch a clue folks.
