California Considers Expelling Kids for Sexting

He could get expelled, NBC News reports.
The California Assembly is considering a bill to enable schools to expel students who send naughty pictures on their cell phones. The bill passed the state Senate June 7.
The bill is sponsored by state Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, and defines sexting as "sending or receiving sexually explicit pictures or videos electronically."
That leaves some gray areas, NBC reports.
For example, could a student be expelled for sending photos of a Playboy centerfold or other body parts other than his or her own? What if the offense occurred off school grounds?
There could be a lot of empty seats in class if school officials nab everyone. Studies show as many as one in five California teenagers have sent or posted nude or semi-nude pictures and videos online, according to NBC.
Lieu tells the network that high school students have enough hormone-related problems without adding sexting to the mix.
Meanwhile, the American Civil Liberties Union opposes the bill as an assault on teenagers' freedom of expression and right to privacy.

Donna Cave said...Each student should have to keep their cell phones in their locker or in lieu of a locker a basket in their home room. In case of emergency, parents can call the office. Other than an emergency, they can leave a message on the phone and the child can get it before leaving school. Changes in plans, etc. are a part of life and have been for a long time before I was in school (we survived before cell phones). Life can go on quite well without cell phone contact during school hours. Get over it.

Clarissa said...If the incident happened ON SCHOOL PROPERTY the student should be given in school suspension for first offence, for second offense they should be given out of school suspension and for third offence they should then be expelled.
If the the incident happened away from school then let the parents handle it. The school does not have the right to dictate what a child does when they are not on school property. Too many schools are being allowed to over step their boundaries.

If they're sexting at home, or bring a cell phone on school grounds but not sexting on school grounds, then no. Whats next, are schools going to expel students for looking at porn in their homes if they later bring their laptops to school if some of the naughty pictures are still in the temp folder.
