Dad Who Let Daughter, 8, Kickbox in Aussie Match Has Fight on His Hands
Filed under: In The News
A little girl who dreams of being a kickboxer when she grows up may be a bit unusual, but we can get behind that. Oh, you say her dad is a world kickboxing champ? Well, that makes even more sense.
But putting her in the boxing ring for a three-round fight in front of a paying crowd? Now, that's got folks crying crikey.
Australia's John Wayne Parr is drawing some serious boos after he allowed Jasmine, his 8-year-old daughter, to fight a 7-year-old in the ring, "Today" reports.
"When I grow up I want to be like my mom and dad," Jasmine tells the show. "My kicks are getting harder and harder every day."
"Today" reports Jasmine cried after the first three-minute round of the controversial bout after being knocked down, but the girl got back in the ring and the match ended in a draw.
The fight has drawn harsh criticism, according to the show.
"We had a girl aged 9 who was hospitalized due to a significant concussion as a result of boxing," Dr. Kellie Wilson of Sydney Children's Hospital tells "Today."
Parr says he wasn't expecting the backlash.
"I'm a good guy," he tells "Today." "I wouldn't put my own flesh and blood in the ring unless I thought it was 100 percent safe."
British national kickboxing champ Amanda Kelly backs him up.
"It's a great way of teaching them to have confidence, coordination, balance, " she tells "Today" of kickboxing for kids.
Jasmine tells "Today" she wants a big trophy one day -- but she doesn't want to hit the ring again until she's 10.
"I think that my dad and my mom are good parents and I think they would never push me into something," the girl tells the show.
What do you think? Should parents let young kids duke it out? Leave a comment below!

anthony said...There is nothing wrong with having your son/daughter in kickboxing or any other type of sport at a young age. Im not saying to force them but if its getting them away from the TV, games and violance then you should do everything in your power to help them out! What kind of parent wants there kid to be fat, depressed and have no way of defending themself? If you think it is wrong that is your opinion but dont judge other people for what they do. My son is in jiujitsu and he loves it and he is 7!

Its not the kids that learn kick boxing, karate etc that go around beating other kids up its the ones who have no discipline that feel the need to prove their bigger and better then everyone else

I plan on signing my daughter up for MMA as soon as she turns 3 (the youngest they will take a child) Like any kind of true fighting style the FIRST thing you learn is discipline. Kids who learn fighting early on are better in control of themselfs and know how to defend themselfs when the need comes to.

Our daughter is a first-year law student, our oldest son is in his 3rd year of college, and our youngest just graduated with honors from high school. None have been in jail, none have a drug or drinking problem, the please, yes sir and yes ma'am are defined parts of their vocabularies and none have ever exhibited so much as an iota of a tendency to violence. Yet, I would trust their training to protect any one of those of you who have submitted posts to this site on this subject. Your profiling belies your ignorance of what true martial arts training was and is founded in, and is practiced for. I bow with great respect to this poised, respectful young lady, and the path she is embarking on. The training she recieves now will help guide her for the rest of her life.
I know this to be true, because in addition to being a father I am also an educator, and a 27 year veteran student and instructor of Wado Ryu Karatedo.

STOP THESE DAMN PAGENTS. Let a girl that young be a kid not a young whore

Meg said...I agree with you completely. It makes me sick to see these little girls dressed like that. They shouldn't be subject to looking like a 20+ year old or going through the whole process. They can do pageants later on in life.
The parents that put their little girls through this I swear have a screw lose.

Anne said...The issue is not the participation in martial arts for this child........many children begin karate/judo/juijitsu at a young age. But kick boxing involves repetitive blows to the head. Even with a head protector, this child suffered a concussion. There is just nothing that can justify exposing a child to this type of trauma on a repetitive basis. We now know that repetetive head trauma and concussions lead to significant brain dysfunction later in life. Even high school football coachs know this. Her parents need to get real.

When I was seven I was already learning how to shoot a gun.
This really isnt as bad as one would think. I wish more girls would want to get into this.

If you hit that water wrong, is that not dangerous? Gymnastics? Good for them. Maybe she will be able to defend herself from someone twice her size if ever she needs to!
