When Scott Lee Cohen dropped out of the Illinois lieutenant governor race on Super Bowl Sunday, he cried at his press conference. So did his 11-year-old son. On camera.

Cohen, the Democratic candidate who owns a pawnshop in Chicago, withdrew amid allegations of domestic abuse by a girlfriend (who is a former prostitute), steroid abuse and "forcing himself on his ex-wife," according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Allegedly.

Here is a video of the emotional press conference at Chicago's Hop Haus tavern. The boy on the left is his 11-year-old son, Jacob, one of Cohen's four children.
Carrie Underwood will appear on "Sesame Street" -- as a worm.

But that's not a bad thing. See, the "American Idol" winner and country music superstar has a muppet of her very own: Carrie Underworm. Underwood performed "Worm Anthem," an original song for the kids show, in which she sings about being "proud to be a worm."

Here is a video preview, in which Carrie Underworm is introduced by none other than NASCAR superstar Jeff Gordon.
Ads that proclaim "Black Children Are An Endangered Species" are raising eyebrows in Atlanta.

The 65 billboards, one of which is pictured above, are simple -- just that phrase, a large photo of a child's face, and the Web site, TooManyAborted.com.
Continue reading Atlanta Billboards Proclaim 'Black Children Are An Endangered Species'

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Drew Brees and His Son After the Super Bowl - Best Moment of the Big Game?

Filed under: Fun & Activities, In The News, Sports, Opinions

The best moment of the big game may have happened after it was all over.

Super Bowl XLIV was as good as it gets. Two great teams played a great game, the Saints won their first Super Bowl ever (fun fact: until 2010, the franchise had won a total of just two postseason games in 43 years), and the city of New Orleans got a welcome infusion of pure joy.

But how many of us can relate to winning the Super Bowl? Not a whole lot. But any parent can relate to what happened right after the New Orleans Saints claimed victory Sunday night.

Look at this video of Super Bowl MVP Brees and his son on the field after the big game:

A high school senior was unable to take the last exam she needed to graduate -- because she was homeless.

However, ParentDish has learned that the 17-year-old will be able to start college next month, although she will still have to take the exam in June to get her high school Regents diploma.

The Bracero family was evicted from their home last week and went to an intake center to try and find a place to stay, according to a report in the New York Daily News. Rosa Bracero, 17, told the center's staff she had to go take her English Regents exam, a standardized test administered in a few states, in order to graduate from Brooklyn's High School for Civil Rights. She was informed that if she left, her family would be denied shelter. So Rosa stayed, missing the exam.

"Given that the State does not allow make-up Regents exams, we will continue to work with this student so that she can take the exam and go to college," wrote Danny Kanner, spokesperson for the New York City Department of Education, in an email to ParentDish on Friday.

Hopping on the helpful bandwagon, Jonathan Burman of the New York State Education Department sent ParentDish a statement as well.

"Working together with the high school's principal, the City's central administration, and Lincoln Technical Institute, we achieved a favorable solution: Lincoln Tech, the college Rosa wants to attend, has accepted her and will permit her to begin taking classes on February 16th," wrote Burman. "She will be able to take the Regents exam in June and will graduate at that time."
Continue reading Teen Misses Exam Because She's Homeless; State Does The Right Thing And Arranges For College

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

FDA Fears Kids Will Like Dissolvable Tobacco

Remember candy cigarettes? You can still buy them, and odds are some kids still enjoy them, but they don't actually contain any tobacco; powdered sugar meant to look like smoke is as close as they come to real cigarettes.

Now the Food and Drug Administration is worried that kids will like dissolvable tobacco, which can be found in products that somewhat resemble breath mints, but contain tobacco and nicotine.

The Associated Press reports that Dr. Lawrence Deyton, director of the FDA's Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) sent a letter on Feb. 1 to R.J. Reynolds expressing concern "that children and adolescents may find dissolvable tobacco products particularly appealing, given the brightly colored packaging, candy-like appearance and easily concealable size of many of these products."
Continue reading FDA Fears Kids Will Like Dissolvable Tobacco

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Super Bowl Furor: Pete Townshend Defends Halftime Act Amid Child Porn Accusations

Pete Townshend had a tough time with the rough boys of the media during a press conference on February 4. A reporter wanted to know how the sexagenarian superstar felt about the groups that have issued a "Sex Offender Advisory" in honor of his visit to the Sunshine State.
Continue reading Super Bowl Furor: Pete Townshend Defends Halftime Act Amid Child Porn Accusations

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Noah Cyrus is Not Designing Lingerie

Filed under: Life & Style, Rumors, In The News

Many news outlets are reporting that Noah Cyrus and her friend Emily Grace Reaves are collaborating on what Perez Hilton called a kiddie lingerie collection. We did our own investigation, and found out the truth. Noah Cyrus is not designing lingerie.

So what happened? Is this another Internet meme gone wild, like last year's phony news about the deaths of actors Harrison Ford and Jeff Goldblum?

Not exactly. There is a clothing line, from Ooh! La, La! Couture, but it is not lingerie and was not designed by Noah Cyrus, 9-year-old sister of Miley. The line is named after Noah's friend, sometime Disney actress Emily Grave Reaves, who is also 9 years old.

This tot-centric tale appears to have initiated with a post titled "Noah Cyrus & BFF Launch Kiddie Lingerie Collection" that was published on Perez Hilton's fashion blog CocoPerez.com. Numerous outlets ran with the story, with headlines such as "Achy, breaky, gross" (Metro), "Miley Cyrus' Sis, 9, Launches Kiddie Lingerie Line" (Us Magazine), and "Now Miley Cyrus's nine-year-old sister launches risqué clothing line for pre-teens" (Daily Mail), which does not use the word "lingerie" but did incorrectly report that Noah Cyrus was involved with the clothes in a way other than just wearing them.
Continue reading Noah Cyrus is Not Designing Lingerie

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Kid Almost Suspended for Bringing Tiny Toy Gun to School

Filed under: In The News, Weird But True

School safety is important, but some are saying an elementary school principal overreacted when she saw one of her students playing with a tiny toy gun in the cafeteria.

Mom Laura Timoney went ballistic when she received a call from her son's school. Staten Island fourth-grader Patrick Timoney was in tears, the mad mama told the New York Daily News, because he was being threatened with a suspension by P.S. 52 principal Evelyn Matroianni.

His crime? Possession of a 2-inch toy gun, which Patrick had placed in the hand of a Lego police officer during a lunchtime toy break.

Patrick's father, a retired police officer who shares his little boy's name, tells the Daily News that he has "no problem with the rules" but doesn't see why the tiny gun caused such a big problem.

When the kids are fighting, have you ever wanted to just lock them in a room for a while to see which one is left standing? But while none of us would ever actually go to such an extreme, a Queens, N.Y., teacher and an aide have been accused of doing something very similar in their fourth grade classroom.

The New York Daily News reports that teacher Joseph Gullotta, 29, and teacher's aide Abraham Fox, 43, of Public School 65, have been charged with child endangerment by the Queens District Attorney's office. They are accused of telling two students, ages 9 and 10, to settle their differences by wrestling. In class.

According to the Daily News, the other kids in the Ozone Park, Queens, classroom were instructed to give the two fighters enough room to beat the stuffing out of each other, after another student was told to shut the door.

One member of Gullotta and Fox's fourth-grade arena told the Daily News that he and his fellow classmates were "laughing," and added that the pint-size pugilists "were fighting over some pencils, and they were bleeding."
Continue reading New York Teacher Accused of Staging Student Wrestling Match

Read | Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

New Monopoly has Circular Board, Songs and Credit Cards

In honor of Monopoly's 75th Anniversary, Hasbro is releasing MONOPOLY: Revolution Edition. What makes it new? A circular board, plastic pieces and an "electronic game pod" that plays music and keeps track of the money. So long, paper currency.

Also different are the dollar amounts: $200 for passing Go? P'shaw. That'll be $2 million, now.
Continue reading New Monopoly has Circular Board, Songs and Credit Cards

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Opinion: Disgraced Athletes Should Stop Playing The Kid Card

Filed under: Behaving Badly, In The News, Resources, Sports, Opinions

Whenever a professional athlete screws up, one of the first things we hear is about how he wants to work with kids. But do we really want some of these people spending time with children?

This is a familiar trope for athletes who fall from grace -- working with kids. Because it's all about the children. After the pros screw up, at least.

Michael Vick, NFL quarterback, dog-fighting enthusiast and convicted felon, has a new reality show starting on BET this week. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Vick says he did the show, "because I felt that I can help save a lot of our kids by showing them what I went through. I want them to understand that you've got to start dreaming when you're young, but also you got to have a plan. You can't put yourself in vulnerable positions, you have to value every opportunity that you get in life."

Meaning what, exactly? That if you want to play professional football, getting caught running an illegal dog-fighting ring is a bad idea?

It's probably better for Vick to be around children than it is for him to be around dogs. But maybe he should stay away from both groups.
Continue reading Opinion: Disgraced Athletes Should Stop Playing The Kid Card

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Read the Bible On Your XBox 360

Filed under: Fun & Activities, Religion & Spirituality

Video gaming just got a little holier. Now you can actually read the Bible on your XBox 360.

Seriously.

Created by B&H Publishing Group and available in the XBox Live Marketplace for 400 Microsoft Points (equivalent to 5 real-world dollars, or much less than 30 pieces of silver), Bible Navigator X appears to be more of an e-book than a game.

It's Marketplace listing is unintentionally amusing:
A British retail giant has decided that customers wearing PJs are not welcome. And that has one mom crying foul.

Elaine Carmody, 24, is a mother of two young boys who frequently shopped at her local Tesco wearing pajamas. (They spell it "pyjamas" across the pond, FYI.) About a week ago, Carmody tried to buy a pack of cigarettes and was turned away, according to the BBC.

For wearing pajamas.

Carmody says she thinks it's "stupid" that the store decided not to allow folks to shop wearing what a Tesco sign refers to as "nightwear." The busy mom wonders, "If you're allowed to wear jogging bottoms, why aren't you allowed to wear pyjamas in there, that's what I don't understand?" Here is a YouTube video that appears to include the interview with Carmody; we were unable to verify it's authenticity, but the quotes are the same.
The UK's General Medical Council (GMC) has ruled that anti-vaccination hero Dr. Andrew Wakefield acted "dishonestly and irresponsibly" when he conducted a 1998 study that suggested a possible link between the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine and autism.
The GMC hearings, which went on for two and half years, dealt with the methods of Wakefield's research, not the results, according to the BBC.

The GMC says that Wakefield performed spinal taps on his young patients, and also accused him of paying children for blood samples at his son's birthday party.
Continue reading Panel Calls Anti-Vax Doc Unethical, Supporters Don't Care

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sex-Offender Advisory Issued For Pete Townshend's Super Bowl Performance

The locals around Florida's Sun Life Stadium say they won't get fooled again. As The Who comes to town to play the Super Bowl halftime show on February 7, a local watchdog group wants to make sure that area residents know it's a legal matter. The group, Protect Our Children, Inc., is mailing "sex offender advisory" postcards to homes near the site of the big game, warning them about guitarist Pete Townshend's past, when he was charged by British police in 2003 for buying child pornography from a Texas-based Web site.

The classic rocker pleaded guilty back then, but said he'd been researching childhood memories of sexual assault for his autobiography. Townshend received a police caution, but was cleared on charges of possession of indecent pictures. As a result, the guitarist was named on the UK sex-offenders' registry for five years.

California schoolchildren soon will be jumping for joy, their health and maybe even a world record. And when they finish, they can drink a delicious fruit smoothie.

The Jamba Juice Company and the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (CAHPERD) are expecting 80,000 schoolchildren from various locations in California to try to break the record for "Most People Jumping/Skipping Rope at the Same Time," according to a press release.

In 2008, 59,000 Australian schoolchildren made an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for most people jumping rope at one time (they call it "skipping rope" in Australia and in the U.K.). The event was held at the Sydney Olympic Sports Centre, and was sponsored by Australia's Heart Foundation in partnership with the Australian Cartoon Network, according to AustralianWomenOnline.

Now, CAHPERD and popular juice chain Jamba Juice have joined together to organize "2010 Jamba Jump Day" on Feb. 1, and they hope they will bust the Australian record wide open.
Continue reading California Schoolchildren Will Try to Break Jump Rope Record

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tim Tebow Super Bowl Ad Kicking Up Controversy

Filed under: In The News, Sports

Super Bowl XLIV doesn't kick off until Feb. 7, but an ad featuring college quarterback Tim Tebow and his family is already causing controversy because it contains what some say is an anti-choice message.

The Tebow ad is paid for by conservative Christian group Focus on the Family, using money donated to the group by "very generous friends," according to Gary Schneeberger, a spokesperson for the evangelical nonprofit organization.

The theme of the ad: "Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life," according to a report from the Associated Press. Focus on the Family takes a strong anti-abortion stance, and is also against gay marriage. ("God created marriage as a loyal partnership between one man and one woman," according to its Web site.)

Although the ad will not be shown on television until the Super Bowl, the AP report says the ad will probably tell the story of Tebow's mother, Pam, who was advised to have an abortion after she became ill during a mission trip to the Philippines when she was pregnant with her fifth child.
Continue reading Tim Tebow Super Bowl Ad Kicking Up Controversy

Read | Read | Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Seven-Year-Old Raises Big Money For Haiti

Filed under: In The News, Amazing Kids

The tragedy in Haiti has moved many people to open their hearts and their wallets. And the millions of dollars raised by celebrities via the Hope For Haiti Now telethon was very impressive. But wait until you hear how much money one kid raised all by his lonesome -- just by riding his bike.

Charlie Simpson is a 7-year-old boy from West London. After seeing pictures of the tragic earthquake on television, Charlie decided to do what he could for the people of Haiti. But how? By riding his bike and asking for sponsors via the Internet. Charlie (with help from his parents, Leonora and Daniel) set up a page at JustGiving.com and posted the following message:

My name is Charlie Simpson, I want to do a Sponsored Bike Ride for Haiti because there was a big earthquake and loads of people have lost their lives. I want to make some money to buy food, water and tents for everyone in Haiti.
I am going to cycle around South Park as many times as possible.... (at least 10 laps, I hope!). Please can you sponsor me and all your money will go to UNICEF who are collecting for Haiti.
THANK YOU VERY, VERY MUCH!
Charlie.
