You've stuffed your hospital delivery bag with a robe, slippers and other comforts from home, but don't forget to include baby boy clothes when you pack.

You'll take lots of photos at the hospital and possibly even more for baby's homecoming. While many moms opt for practical newborn boy clothing, others want a special baby boy homecoming outfit to be captured on camera. Here are our tips for picking the perfect baby boy homecoming outfit.

Consider family heirlooms: Save money on baby boy clothes by opting for gently-used hand-me-downs or a family heirloom. Since homecoming outfits are often treasured keepsakes, it's quite possible your mother-in-law still has your husband's baby boy homecoming outfit or the baby cap he wore. It would be a sweet, sentimental gesture to use Daddy's homecoming outfit or to wrap the new baby in your treasured baby blanket.

Bring a spare outfit: Newborns drool and spit up. A lot. So bring an extra outfit to the hospital. It's not uncommon for moms to bring their babies home in a completely different outfit than planned because their newborns spit up all over the original homecoming outfits.

Think about sizes: On message boards, moms frequently complain that their babies "swam" in huge outfits marked 0-3 months, while larger babies could be too big for the newborn boy clothing their mothers packed. Since babies have delicate skin, you'll want to wash the outfits in advance, which can make a too-small newborn outfit non-returnable. Our advice? Bring a size 0-3 months outfit to the hospital and leave a newborn outfit and a bigger sized outfit at home. If your baby is too small or too big for the 0-3 month outfit, then your husband or a friend can remove the tags from the correctly sized baby boy clothing at home, wash it and bring it to the hospital.

And here are some of our favorite baby boy clothes that would be perfect homecoming outfits:
There's little that makes a mother cry "Poor baby" like a child who is teething.

And, poor mama, too. Baby teething pains cause many sleepless nights for you, as well as your little one. In desperation, you may be tempted to try an outdated remedy. While you'd never feed your baby vodka, rum or whiskey, you might be tempted to rub some alcohol on your baby's gums to numb them. But while Grandma may have relied on rum to treat teething pain, doctors recommend against this old-fashioned remedy.

Here are some safe baby teething tips to relieve baby's pain and help everyone get some sleep:

Chill Out: Cold can soothe a baby's sore gums. Soak a washcloth in ice water, squeeze out the excess water and let your baby chew on the washcloth. Or, purchase a plastic gel baby teething ring that you refrigerate. While many moms freeze their teething rings, some pediatricians recommended against extreme cold. If your baby is eating solid foods, you may find that serving chilled foods such as yogurt, chilled bananas and applesauce soothe, as well.

Massage Those Gums: Use a chilled washcloth or clean finger to gently massage your baby's gums. Baby teething pain can be relieved by gentle pressure. Many teething rings contain nubs and ridges to help massage a baby's gums. We like the First Years Massaging Action Teether, which is star-shaped and vibrates when baby bites down it, plus, each of the three star tips has a different texture.
Continue reading Baby Teething: Strategies to Help Your Baby Sleep

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Double Strollers: Best Jogging Strollers

Filed under: Babies, Baby Essentials, Mommy Musts, Strollers, Gear Guides: Babies

Carting around two little ones can lead to some serious double trouble. And without a good stroller? Can you say, nightmare?

If you're investing in a double stroller, it may well be worth it to pay a little more for a double jogging stroller. Double jogging strollers are perfect for running, jogging and everyday use. Here are some of our favorite double jogging strollers.

Bumbleride Indie Twin Double Stroller: Launched as Bumbleride's first side-by-side stroller, the Indie Twin accommodates both infants and older siblings and is compatible with infant car seat carriers. This top-of-the-line double jogging stroller is pricey at $600-plus, but premium features help justify the price tag. The independent seating system means you can adjust the backrests, canopies and footrests to fit both of your children's unique needs. And the dual-front swiveling wheels make it easy to maneuver the stroller even at a fast pace.

Phil & Teds Dash Double Stroller: Many side-by-side double jogging strollers are too wide to fit though doorways, making them impractical for shopping trips and daily use. But the Phil & Teds Dash stroller is in-line instead of side-by-side. The Dash can accommodate a lie-flat newborn or a 5-year-old, and it's adaptable. When your older child outgrows the stroller, you can remove the doubles kit and use it as a single jogging stroller. Tall moms will appreciate the multi-position adjustable handle. The Phil & Teds Dash sells for $500-plus.

InSTEP Run Around 2 Jogging Stroller: The InSTEP Double Jogging Stroller doesn't have as many bells and whistles as the Bumbleride or Phil & Teds Dash, but you'll love its affordable price: $150-plus. You won't need to bust your budget to buy this stroller, which still has some great features, including a one-handed fold for easy closing. You can even fit this stroller in your trunk. If you want a softer ride, upgrade to the InSTEP Grand Safari Swivel Double Jogging Stroller, which has a spring suspension for a smoother ride on any terrain.

Kelty Speedster Deuce Stroller: Kelty makes a sturdy double jogging stroller. In fact, Kelty is the official stroller of Baby Boot Camp, the stroller exercise class. The seats are roomy and comfortable for your kids, and moms will appreciate the adjustable height handle, water bottle holders and runaway leash. Additionally, the Kelty Speedster can be used as either a fixed wheel or swivel wheel stroller, which makes it adaptable for moms who want to use this double jogging stroller on trips to the mall or other locations where maneuverability is more important than speed. The Kelty costs $400-plus, making it a good mid-range jogging stroller.

Britax B-Ready Double Jogging Stroller: The Britax B-Ready, at $499.99, is a state-of-the-art modular stroller with more than 14 configurations. You can integrate your infant car seat carrier or adjust the stroller to accommodate children up to 55 pounds. This is a stroller for light jogging or walking, rather than fast-paced all-terrain running. However, moms like its flexibility, and this is a great stroller for twins since it fits two infant car seat carriers.

Forget fancy candles, giant bouquets or decadent treats. Baby shower diaper cakes are today's go-to baby shower centerpieces.

The coolest baby shower diaper cakes are loaded with lots of other surprises for the mom-to-be, in addition to that very useful supply of diapers. So, what's hidden inside those baby shower diaper cakes, anyway?

The common elements to all baby shower diaper cakes are diapers, rubber bands and ribbon. (Click here for a video tutorial on how to make a diaper cake.) But beyond the basics, there's room to customize your diaper cake to match the baby shower theme. To spark your creativity, here are some popular items to decorate and put inside baby shower diaper cakes:

Nap Time: Burp cloths and receiving blankets are practical gifts. Wrap the outside layers of your baby shower diaper cake in receiving blankets to imitate icing. Use a matching burp cloth for the top layer of your cake. If you're making a cake out of chlorine-free diapers rather than pure white Pampers Swaddlers, you may want to use this trick to hide the unbleached, natural-color diapers.
Continue reading Baby Shower Diaper Cake: What's Inside?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Baby Shower Idea: Shower the Daddy

Filed under: Babies, Just For Dads, Gear Guides: Babies

Ever wonder why it's the moms who get all the baby shower fun?

With more and more dads staying home with the kids, it's about time these pops get a party of their own. In fact, even dads who work outside the home are taking on increased responsibilities around the house. The National Parent Teacher Association recently released a study showing that fathers have become significantly more involved in their children's education over the past 10 years. So, is throwing Dad a party really such a radical baby shower idea?

Here are some original baby shower ideas for expectant daddies:

Tool Time Baby Shower: While Dad's friends may be reluctant to attend a "girly" baby shower, most would be happy enough to help with "manly" tasks such as painting the nursery and assembling the crib and baby furniture. Don't serve traditional baby shower food like sheet cake with pink frosting, tea sandwiches or fruit salads. Let a Super Bowl party menu inspire your daddy baby shower menu. Snacks including buffalo wings, chips and dip, sliders and other "guy food" would be welcome.
Continue reading Baby Shower Idea: Shower the Daddy

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Baby Shower Centerpieces That Last

Filed under: Just For Moms, Babies, Decor

Throwing a memorable baby shower by coordinating decorations with the shower's theme will likely make the mother-to-be happy. But also investing in a long-lasting baby shower centerpiece will allow your guest of honor to think fondly of her baby shower for years to come.

Here are some of our favorite long-lasting baby shower centerpieces:

Baby Block Centerpieces: Purchase one or more sets of colorful wooden alphabet blocks or buy a blank set of wooden blocks and paint them yourself. Spell out baby-themed words such as "baby girl," "baby boy," "bib," "bottle" or "love" in the center of the table. Surround the blocks with tea lights or flameless LED tea lights. This is a centerpiece that lasts, since baby-to-be will play with the wooden blocks for years to come.

Rub-a-Dub-Dub: For a sweet bath time theme, buy reusable metal tins at a craft store. Float colorful rubber duckies or other classic bath toys in the tubs. The tins from your long-lasting baby shower centerpiece can be reused in the future as flower pots, and baby will use the bath toys over and over again.

Baby Sock Bouquet: One of our favorite centerpieces that lasts is the baby sock "rose" bouquet. Mom will use the vase in the future, and she'll certainly need the socks when the new baby arrives. Purchase a baby bootie vase or make one yourself. You'll need six pairs of socks to make a dozen "roses," wire and a lot of florist tape. Making the roses is fairly intuitive, but this video contains step-by-step instructions. Display your homemade "flowers" in a tall glass vase. For added realism, purchase some inexpensive greens and baby's breath at a local florist shop or nursery.
Continue reading Baby Shower Centerpieces That Last

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Transitioning From Bottle-Feeding to Sippy Cup

Filed under: Babies, Development/Milestones: Babies, Expert Advice: Babies, Gear Guides: Babies

Whether you're breast-feeding or bottle-feeding your child, deciding when to transition to a sippy cup can be difficult. While the American Academy of Pediatrics encourages breast-feeding until your child is at least 12 months old, there are no set guidelines when it comes to how long to bottle-feed babies.

Suri Cruise was still drinking from a bottle nearly a week before her 4th birthday, leading experts to debate whether it was time for the celeb-u-tot to transition from the bottle to the sippy cup.

Dr. Jennifer Shu, pediatrician and co-author of "Food Fights," told Usmagazine.com last fall that Cruise should have been weaned off the bottle by her first birthday.

"By the time kids are 9 months old, they have the physical development and mouth coordination necessary to be able to drink out of a sippy cup or a cup with straw," she told the site. "That development comes pretty early."

While it's easy to criticize, transitioning bottle-feeding babies to a sippy cup isn't always as simple as it sounds. Dr. Harvey Karp, a pediatrician and author of "The Happiest Toddler on the Block," told USmagazine.com that bottles "may serve as an emotional security device."
Continue reading Transitioning From Bottle-Feeding to Sippy Cup

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Baby Shower Centerpieces: DIY Florals and More

Filed under: Babies, Baby Essentials, Decor, Mommy Musts

When you're decorating for a baby shower, centerpieces help set the mood. Floral centerpieces are beautiful, but can be expensive. As an alternative, why not make your own DIY baby shower centerpieces instead? Here are a few of our faves.

DIY Diaper Cakes: Rather than spend your entire decorating budget on flowers, invest in something every new mom needs: diapers. Diaper cakes can be as pretty as floral centerpieces, and they're easier to make than you might imagine. It's even possible to create a diaper cake that matches your baby shower theme -- all it takes is some coordinating ribbon. Not feeling brave enough to make your own diaper cake baby shower centerpiece? Just buy a kit.

Baby Sock Bouquet: Guests will marvel at an adorable baby sock "rose" bouquet. These creative and practical baby shower centerpieces cost less than $20 to make. You'll need six pairs of socks to make a dozen "roses," wire and a lot of florist tape. For easy step-by-step instructions, check out this tutorial. Display your "flowers" in a tall glass vase. For added realism, purchase some inexpensive greens and baby's breath at a local florist shop or nursery.
Continue reading Baby Shower Centerpieces: DIY Florals and More

Permalink | Email this | Comments

DIY Baby Shower Ideas

Filed under: Just For Moms, Babies, Mommy Musts

Say money is tight? We hear you. But we're also here to tell you: The best parties don't require the biggest budgets. Throw a fabulous baby shower with our affordable DIY baby shower ideas.

Spa Party Baby Shower Ideas: When baby arrives, Mom will have a lot less time to herself, so pamper her now with a DIY spa party. Serve healthy spa foods such as cucumber sandwiches, veggies and dip, simple salads, fruit smoothies and spa teas while you indulge in DIY facials and pedicures. Making your own face mask isn't complicated. In fact, some of the best face masks use single ingredients. Rachael Ray has a to-die-for coconut food treatment for a spa party. For a baby shower favor, let guests keep the nail polish they used for their mani or pedi, or make your own bath salts as a party activity and use them as DIY baby shower favors.

Scrapbooking Baby Shower Ideas: Bring a digital camera and a photo printer and take and print pictures of the mama-to-be with her party guests. Invite guests to make a scrapbook page and write a special message for the guest of honor. Provide glue sticks, colored markers and pens and an assortment of scrapbook papers. Since scrapbook stickers can be expensive, invest in one baby-themed stamp set.
Continue reading DIY Baby Shower Ideas

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Baby Girl Shower Themes

If you're planning a baby girl shower, it's time to think beyond the pink. Sure, the all-pink princess baby shower theme is popular, but modern mamas are picking baby shower themes that reflect their interests and personalities. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Candy Land Baby Shower Theme: Shower the mom to be with kisses, Hershey's Kisses, that is, at a sweet candy-themed baby shower. For inspiration, turn to the classic children's board game Candy Land with its Candy Cane Forest, Gum Drop Mountain and Lollipop Woods. Use bright cheerful colors for your decor -- purples, teals and pinks. For an affordable and easy centerpiece, construct your own gingerbread house or, in just minutes, construct your own lollipop bouquets using large colorful lollipops, flowerpots and some florist foam. Invite guests to take home the oversize lollipops as party favors.

For food choices, you can't go wrong with chocolate and ice cream. Rent or purchase a chocolate fountain and set out an assortment of pretzel sticks, marshmallows and fruit. A make-your-own sundae bar with colorful toppings such as rainbow sprinkles, cherries, gummy bears, strawberries and M&Ms goes well with the Candy Land baby shower theme.

Library Baby Shower Theme: Book-loving moms will appreciate a library-themed baby shower. Invite guests to build the baby's library by bringing a book as a present. For decorating inspiration, turn to your favorite children's books (think books from Dr. Seuss, Mother Goose or Beatrix Potter and classic fairy tales). Make color copies of iconic images from your favorite kid's books, and use them to decorate a square glass photo vase for a literary-themed centerpiece.
Continue reading Baby Girl Shower Themes

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Spanish Baby Names for Boys

Spanish is a Romance language, so it's only natural that Spanish baby names sound beautiful and melodic to American ears. Names including Xavier, Sebastian, Cruz and Joaquin are now popular boy baby names among Hispanic and non-Hispanic parents alike.

And, with nearly 16 percent of the U.S. population being of Hispanic origin, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, more and more parents are looking to honor their heritage, often by picking Spanish baby names.

Some parents looking for unique Spanish baby names may want to pick something that is popular outside of the United States. For example, Santiago is one of the 10 most popular names in Mexico, but only ranks 130th in the United States. Cruz is also poised to become a trendy Spanish baby name. The name currently is ranked 346th in the United States, but it has almost doubled in popularity since 1990. Much of the name's popularity can be attributed to David and Victoria Beckham, who named one of their sons Cruz in 2005.

Picking the right baby name is never easy, but with the right resources, Sikh parents can find a name that honors their religious and cultural traditions.

Sikh baby names are uncommon in the United States, so if you're hoping to give your child a Sikh baby name, online resources will help. Here are a few sites to get you started.

About.com: This site offers a comprehensive list of Sikh baby names by letter, and is one of the best resources for understanding how Sikh baby names are selected.

All girls' names end with Kaur, which means princess, and all boys' names end with Singh, meaning lion. This tradition in Sikh baby names was intended to reduce the prejudice in India created on caste-typing based on the family name and to show equality between men and women.

Your family is growing, and everyone is excited to welcome home the new baby. But that doesn't mean the transition won't be without a few bumps along the way.

To keep your older children from feeling left out and left behind, celebrate their new role as big brothers or sisters by sending sibling birth announcements that they help create.

DIY designs: If you prefer something personal, DIY birth announcements are a fun way to involve your older children. Purchase blank white cards and envelopes at craft or scrapbooking stores and ask your child to decorate them with stickers, crayons, finger paint or glitter. Glue on a picture of the new baby to complete the card. These sibling birth announcements won't look professional, but Grandma and Grandpa will appreciate the one-of-a-kind homemade creation.

Handprint cards: Not very artsy? Don't worry about it! Some sibling birth announcements are extremely easy to make. Homemade birth announcements using simple handprints can be lovely and memorable. To make, buy non-toxic finger paint, choosing either pastels (pink and blue) or bright primary colors (red, blue and yellow) and help your older child or children make handprints or footprints on a sheet of white cardstock paper.
Continue reading Sibling Birth Announcements: DIY Kids Craft

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Pregnancy Announcements: Etiquette

Filed under: Babies, Mommy Musts, Gear Guides: Pregnancy

You've been keeping it a secret for weeks, but now that you're starting to show, it's time to tell the world that you're pregnant.

But what's the best way? Pregnancy announcements, while unheard of just a few years ago, are a growing trend. In fact, Tiny Prints, an online card store specializing in birth announcements and invitations, has an entire section devoted to pregnancy announcements.

Expectant parents can announce their pregnancy in style with more than 30 different pregnancy announcements available on the site, including "Stork News," "Expecting," "Coming Soon," or "Due Date" cards.

It appears sending pregnancy announcements is gaining in popularity, but what would your grandmother think of this trend, and just what is the proper pregnancy announcement etiquette, anyway?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nursing Bras and Nursing Tanks

Nursing bras aren't just essential items for breastfeeding mothers -- the right bra also can make a nursing woman feel more attractive and comfortable.

Most women will want to look for both daytime nursing bras and sleep nursing bras. When buying nursing bras, it's important to take into account the amount of support required, as well as the type of clothing you plan to wear while nursing, considering some of the most supportive nursing bras provide such full coverage that it would be impossible to wear even a modest V-neck shirt without the bra showing.

Nursing bras and nursing tanks can be expensive, so it pays to do your research before purchasing. Lactation consultants can help breastfeeding mothers find the right nursing bras or nursing tanks for their bodies and lifestyles.

What do Mary, Sophie and Rachel have in common with Kristen, Shiloh and Alexandra?

They're all biblical baby names that happen to be popular, as well.

Many parents pick biblical baby names to honor their Christian or Jewish heritage and often, their choices are inspired by a favorite Bible story.

For boys, Jesus is a top baby name in Hispanic communities, and the apostles, evangelists and heroes of the Old Testament often appear on annual top 100 boy baby names lists.

But, even if parents are not religious, there are still good reasons to pick biblical baby names. These names are timeless, since they have been used continuously for thousands of years, and a widely-used baby name such as Matthew or David is a safe choice for parents concerned their child might be teased over an unusual name.
Continue reading Biblical Baby Names: Best Resources

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Baby Shower Gifts for Outdoorsy Parents

Sure, bottles, blankets and binkies are nice, but baby shower gifts don't have to be bland.

With so many folks shopping off of baby shower gift registries today, parents shouldn't be afraid to consider their own passions and interests when listing the items they want and need. Love hiking, camping, fishing and being outdoors? These are all activities you can enjoy with your baby. Here are some ideas for the best baby shower gifts for outdoorsy parents.

Let the Sun Shine In: Sun protection products are among the best baby shower gifts for parents who plan to spend a lot of time outside with baby. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and infants can be more sensitive to the sun than adults. It's important to protect their skin by practicing sun safety -- including wearing sunglasses and a sun hat.

Sun protective clothing from Coolibar offers UPF 50 protection from both UVA and UVB rays. Coolibar makes a wide range of infant sun hats, sunglasses and full-coverage sun rompers and swimsuits. For parents who will spend time fishing or romping in the water with their kids, Coolibar's fast-drying Aqua fabric clothes make great baby shower gifts.
Continue reading Baby Shower Gifts for Outdoorsy Parents

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Muslim Baby Names for Girls

Muslim baby names for baby girls can be beautiful, but it's important that parents also consider the meanings behind the names.

The most popular Muslim baby names are Arabic, since this is the language of the Qur'an (Koran), but when selecting Muslim baby names, an honorable meaning is even more important than the language.

In fact, some names are forbidden or highly discouraged for Muslims. Parents are advised to avoid selecting any name with a negative or idolatrous meaning. Additionally, Muslim baby names may not be any of Allah's names and parents are discouraged from naming their child after a tyrant, villain or idolater mentioned in the Qur'an.

For inspiration in selecting Muslim baby names for girls, some expectant parents turn to the Qur'an or to Islamic history. In Islam, there are four women who are recognized as the most righteous (or "perfect") because of their piety. These are Khadijah, Fatima, Maryam and Asiyah.
She may not have Suri Cruise's extravagant wardrobe allowance, but your little girl can still look like a million bucks even if her baby clothes cost a fraction of the famous tot's designer duds.

Budget-conscious parents can stretch their limited clothing dollars by shopping for cheap baby clothes at discount stores or on department store clearance racks.

Expand your options even more by shopping for secondhand baby clothes -- it's possible to score great deals on high quality baby clothes at thrift shops and consignment shops. Since infants grow out of their clothing so quickly, most secondhand baby clothes are gently used and look as good as new. Craigslist and eBay also are fabulous resources for cheap baby clothes. In fact, it's often possible to get an entire bag of gently used clothes in your child's size for less than $10 on these sites.
Continue reading Organize a Swap to Score Cheap Baby Clothes

Permalink | Email this | Comments
