Winter can be a confining time with the memories of summer days in the park buried deep under layers of clothing and puffy parkas. Those rare days when the cold weather permits a visit to the park are indeed lovely gifts. This picture caught my eye because of the cool view and the grainy quality of the black and white. The photographer, loubelou, wrote that she was playing with her husband's new camera while he was off working. While it might have been a new gift for him, I believe she put it to good use with this shot. It's a view we see everyday as we reach into the crib for our wee ones but I love the twist of the different view. Thanks, loubelou, for sharing this with us here at Image fo the Day!

I really dig this image because it is rather bizarre. Nowhere, other than a golf course, have I ever seen grass like this. At this time of year, in my part of the world there is nothing but white, white and more cold white. This picture is vibrant, sharp and sort of surreal. What a wonder it would be to press one's back against this warm bed of grass in the dead of a cold winter and fancy the warmth of summer days. It's hard to believe that the first 31 days of the new year have passed in such a dizzying manner. January is often like this, on the first day we vow to make amends for the previous 365 days and use the next batch for higher and better purposes. But time truly does seem to fly and here we are on the last day ready for the excitement of which picture has won the Image of the Month honor.

This month we had some great shots to choose from and the decision was not an easy one, but after much deliberation the ParentDish staff has chosen the above image, Space Baby, as our winner. Our winner, Wuby Z, submitted this fabulous picture that inspired much chat amongst our staff members. We were all blown away by the lighting, the pose and the many thoughts this picture inspires. In early December I was diagnosed with one of the earliest forms of skin cancer on my face. This came as no surprise because my nose had been peeling for over 18 months despite the fact that I haven't been in the sun for years. I had a few nasty sunburns on my face when I was younger and that, plus genetics, lead to the demise of my facial skin. The dermatologist spent less than 30 seconds looking at my face before he said, "Uh-huh. Yep. Here's a prescription to help prevent this from advancing to a more serious stage. the process will hurt but it will be much better than full blown skin cancer, especially at your age." He wrote me a prescription and sent me on my way.

On January 1 I began the four week treatment,vowing to stick it out no matter how much it hurt. And hurt it has. Not only does my face feel as though it is on fire, I also look absolutely hideous. From my hairline to my collar bone I am covered with angry red splotches and crusty pustules. But what I find to be the most interesting part of this process, other than the fact that I will not expire from skin cancer, is my children's reactions to this diagnosis. My red headed daughter, Cassidy, nearly always wears sunscreen without having to be told so there is no new development there. However, she now peppers me with questions in her free time. She wants to know how I could have let myself get so badly burned that I am now suffering this treatment. She is curious about sun proof clothing and how she can avoid the same fate. My oldest son, Loren, is constantly concerned for my comfort and is even angry that my earlier sins have lead to my current pain. He has shunned sunblock in his more recent years but now vows to wear it when he is out snowboarding this winter. My youngest son, Devon, does not understand at the age of three exactly why his mommy hurts. He can see my red face and knows that I am in pain but he seems to think I have fallen and scraped my cheeks, nose and forehead. He holds my face in his small hands and worries whether or not he can find enough band-aids to help me.

Aside from the obvious medical benefits of my current treatment I am tickled pink, bad pun, that my children are learning from this experience. To have something hit so close to home about a concept as simple as applying sunblock is, I believe, a true gift. I know it is one they are now understanding and I can only hope it is a lesson they will carry with them always.

It's never too early to share the gift of music with a child. This pair looks so cozy and enthralled in their efforts to make beautiful music together. I love the way the father's hands overlap the child's hands on the strings, so much so that I would love to see this cropped and featured as a separate image. The dad's wedding band with the baby's fingers pointing out is a gorgeous combination. The slightly burned edges add to a feeling of quiet beauty. There is always some sort of boy versus girl issue brewing. But the above question is one I often mull over as I am parenting my older two children. My oldest child, Loren, is a classic teen age boy; at 14 he eats huge amounts of food, preferably junk food, he avoids studying for his classes, he loves hanging out with his friends, he prefers playing outdoors rather than sitting inside and he is a slob. A slob to the extent that I often have to take away his privileges just to get him to pick up his dirty clothing or clean out his school backpack. On the other hand, my daughter, Cassidy, is 10 and ready to take the world by storm. Her room is usually clean, her book bag is always devoid of unnecessary papers, she lays out her clothes the night before she is going to wear them and she is nearly always ahead of her class in her school work. Where I want to throw up my arms in frustration with Loren, I can often relax and take solace in the fact that Cassidy has a steady fire burning under her rear and has no problem with being a self starter.

I am not the only mother who suffers this situation. Many parents across the nation experience similar predicaments with their children, particularly their teen age sons. Parents are currently turning to tutors or organizational gurus to help their children get a grip on organizing everything from their backpacks to their schedules. Ana Hamayoun, a San Fransisco based tutor, makes a profitable business by doing just this. Although she helps her students improve their academic endeavors, she often begins by simply asking her clientele, mostly teen boys, to open up their backpacks and fins something. More often than not the boys are unable perform this simple task because of the abundance of random papers, discarded soda cans and other teen boy riff raff. She believes that by helping boys to get organized they will better able to focus and multi-task.

I couldn't agree more with Ms. Hamayoun. I often find that if I give Loren a task consisting of more than seven words, he will return minutes later without a clue what it was I sent him to do. However, if I help him clean up his room, empty his backpack and de-clutter his surroundings, he is better able to perform and seems to think more clearly. This isn't to say that I intend to clean his surroundings until he graduates from high school, but perhaps we can reach some sort of middle ground where he can focus enough to keep his immediate belongings organized and his brain able to handle more than one task at a time.

There are so many thoughts that come to mind as I spy this little guy squatting in the corner. He looks as though he is enjoying himself immensely and might possibly be plotting mayhem as he chews on his bottle and smiles with glee. The caption in the Flickr pool says he is awaiting the doctor for a check-up visit, but he looks far too contented to know what is to come. This is one of those pictures that makes you think of some of the coolest images you have ever seen. This picture brings to mind a man in a space suit overlooking planet earth, a sonogram of a baby in utero or maybe just a newborn looking at his hand in the sunlight. As a mother of an older son and a younger daughter this image tugs at my heart something fierce. This little sister appears absolutely enthralled to have her older brother's complete attention as he divulges something of vast importance into her ear. Any parent of siblings knows this moment is not always representative of everyday life. I love her small arm around his shoulders and the snuggly position of the two of them in their pajamas. This is most definitely an moments to hold dear. Thank you, cathymccaughan, for sharing this with everybody at Image of the Day.

During the long, cold months of the the winter I spend a majority of my days helping to manage a drop-in childcare facility at a swanky ski resort. My section of the facility hosts children from the tender age of eight weeks up to 15 months. Yes, there are people who are willing to entrust complete strangers with the well being of an infant for the opportunity to indulge in a powder day on the slopes. For the most part our staff gets great feedback from these parents who hail from all over the world, but sometimes we get a remarks that send our heads spinning and leave us wondering why it is exactly that we do this job. Following are a few of the comments we have found to be the most shocking this ski season:

  1. "My kid doesn't like any of the staff. I like you but my son definitely hates you." This, especially when said in front of other parents, is not only disrespectful but better left unsaid. Many children are none too happy to be handed off to complete strangers. As care providers we understand this and make the best of efforts to help the children adjust.
  2. "Little Alexa is exclusively breastfed but we thought this would be a great opportunity to start weaning her. So I won't be in until the end of the day to nurse her Good luck with the formula and bottles!" Oh, dear. I don't think I have heard of a professional weaning service. That is a job for parents.
  3. "I have never left James before. He is only ever held by her father and me. Could you please make sure he does not cry at all during the day?" Again, I don't know of any facility promising cry-free days.
  4. "Yep, so here's the kid. Gotta go, the slopes are calling me!" This sort of parent is the antithesis of the above mentioned scenarios, though I find them to be equally as baffling.
  5. "I would like you to document every 10 minutes of little Anna's day. I want to know exactly what he does and when he does it." Like any other mother I am always curious about the activities of my child's day, but I sometimes wonder if these parents need to know so much detail that maybe they should skip the daycare part and spend the day with their small baby.
  6. "Ugh, how can you do this job? I would go nuts! Better you than me." That one is wrong on so many levels. Although I could spend 20 minutes explaining to this type of parent that I need this job for my health insurance, the free season passes for my kids, the free ski and snowboard lessons and even the small paycheck, I don't think they really want to hear it.
