The average adult has 32 teeth, but first come the primary teeth -- sometimes called milk teeth. And, believe us, you're going to spend a lot of time feeling around your baby's mouth to see if there's a tooth coming in.

Teething can be a frustrating time for everyone involved. For kids, getting their first 20 teeth can be a painful process. For parents, it's a confusing one, since the baby can't tell you what's wrong. So, we turned to a few pediatricians to answer our questions.

At what age do which teeth come in?

"The temporary teeth come in between the age of 6 months to 1 year in most children," says Dr. Gaurav Gupta, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and pediatrics expert at JustAnswer.com.

The common schedule looks something like this:

6 to 7 months: Incisors (two central bottom and two central top teeth)

7 to 9 months: More incisors (two top, two bottom)

10 to 14 months: First molars (four teeth closer to the back of the mouth)

15 to 18 months: Canines (four pointed teeth near the front)

2 to 3 years: Second molars (four more teeth at the back of the mouth)

How do you ease the pain?

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), parents should try the following:

Rub the gum with a clean finger, cool spoon or wet gauze pad.

Offer your child a clean teething ring to chew on.

Let them chew on a pacifier.

Ask your pediatrician for a recommendation of a numbing gel or salve or an over-the-counter pain reliever.

Should I be worried?

"If there are no teeth by age 12 months, they should talk to their doctor," says Dr. David Hill, an adjunct assistant professor of pediatrics at UNC Medical School in North Carolina and colleague of Gupta at JustAnswer.

According to the ADA, babies may become fussy and irritable, have trouble sleeping, drool and lose their appetite -- all signs that should not worry parents. But Hill warns parents not to attribute a fever over 102 degrees or severe diarrhea to teething.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

How to Talk to Your Kids About Divorce

Filed under: Divorce & Custody, Single Parenting, Relationships, Expert Advice: Toddlers & Preschoolers, Expert Advice: Big Kids, Social & Emotional Growth: Tweens, Expert Advice: Tweens, Social & Emotional Growth: Teens, Expert Advice: Teens

Divorce is not an easy time for any family, but studies have shown the period leading up to the actual divorce can be one of the hardest for kids.

So, how have so many children emerged from divorced homes to become happy, healthy members of society? Their parents put in the time and effort to make it happen.
"The children need to know that they will always come first," advises Dr. Carole Lieberman, a California psychiatrist who's a member of the clinical faculty at UCLA. "Both parents -- and all their children -- need to be there when they break the news of divorce. And the most important messages to communicate are that it is not the child's fault and that the parents will still always love them."

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Adoption: Finding the Right Agency and Attorney

Filed under: Adoption, Expert Advice: Just For You

So you've made the decision: You want to adopt a child. Congratulations!

Now what? There's an interesting and winding road ahead of you -- from deciding whether you want to adopt domestically or internationally and whether you want to adopt an infant or an older child, to whether you want to start as a foster parent.

But we're getting ahead of ourselves. According to the Child Welfare League of America, the majority of children adopted in America are found via an agency or private adoption with a lawyer helping the parents along the way.

First up, you need to choose an adoption agency or an attorney.

How to find the right agency:

Agencies generally hold open houses on a regular basis, so that's a good start. Drop in to see how you feel about the organization.
Continue reading Adoption: Finding the Right Agency and Attorney

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Bradley, Lamaze or Mongan? Pregnant women spend nine months waiting for the moment when they'll make the trek to the hospital for the big delivery, but you can get a preview of the action at a childbirth class. ParentDish took a look at three of the most popular types of classes in the U.S.:

1. The Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth, sometimes called husband-coached childbirth, is a 12-week program that teaches women to tune into their bodies via natural breathing and relaxation.

Birth coaches are expected to attend, and they'll learn ways to become active participants in labor.

Classes include instruction on nutrition and exercise during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Although there is an emphasis on natural childbirth, class time is also spent on emergency situations, including the discussion of C-sections.

In "The Godfather," they went to the mattresses. In pregnancy, you go to the books. And, since you've already got a lot on your mind, we did the work for you, breaking down some of the most popular pregnancy books on the market.

Like birth plans, a pregnant woman's pick is very personal, so we don't expect you to buy all 10 titles. But, we think we've found at least one for every family -- even the Corleones:

1. The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth by Sheila Kitzinger. If you're looking for a woman-centered approach to pregnancy books, this is it. A natural childbirth advocate who campaigns for women's rights to make their own choices in childbirth, Kitzinger offers the same approach in her books.

2. What to Expect When You're Expecting by Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Mazel. This is the book to pick up for information --we're talking lots of information. Set up as a step-by-step through the months and trimesters, it covers prenatal to the early days after the baby's born. It's one of the best-known pregnancy books, but it's not for everyone.

3. The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy by Vicki Iovine. Want to know what to take to the hospital or why you're feeling randy when you're four months in? This is the book that takes a "we're all girls here" approach to pregnancy and puts out information with a touch of spunk.

4. Your Pregnancy Week By Week by Glade Curtis. Written by an OB/GYN, this is a very specific path through pregnancy. As the title suggests, Curtis lets you in on what's going to be happening week by week for the 40 weeks of gestation, making this the pick for women who want to know what's going on right now.

5. Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn: The Complete Guide by Penny Simkin, Janet Whalley and Ann Keppler. Let's face it -- having a baby is an emotional time, and not just because of hormones. With information on the physical and psychological pregnancy, this is a thorough trip from early pregnancy to early infancy.

6. Your Best Birth: Know All Your Options, Discover the Natural Choices and Take Back the Birth Experience by Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein. Don't let the celeb's name on the cover fool you into thinking this is fluff. Full of real information on taking charge of the birth, it's got a light, conversational tone, but it delves into deep issues on the options women face.

7. The Nursing Mother's Companion by Kathleen Huggins. In-depth details on everything from nursing after a C-section to breastfeeding when you've adopted a child makes this a go-to for first-time nursers.

8. The Birth Partner: A Complete Guide to Childbirth for Dads, Doulas and All Other Labor Companions by Penny Simkin. The rare pregnancy book written not for the mother, but for the people who will be present at the birth, this has earned a reputation as the "birth partner's bible."

9. The Pregnancy Book: Month-by-Month, Everything You Need to Know From America's Baby Experts by William and Martha Sears. From advocates of the attachment parenting movement, this overview of pregnancy includes not just the month-to-month physical symptoms and development, but tips on home birth, avoiding the episiotomy and more to make this mom-centric.

10. Fathering Right from the Start: Straight Talk About Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond by Jack Heinowitz. Written by a psychologist, it's no surprise this book approaches dad's path through pregnancy through his emotions. Heinowitz makes clear a man's role begins at conception -- not when he has to change his first diaper.

Poop happens. Credit: Getty Images

When it comes to kids playing with poop, we've got two words for you: It happens.

And it's also pretty normal, says Michelle LaRowe, author of "Nanny to the Rescue! Straight Talk and Super Tips for Parenting in the Early Years." A mom herself, LaRowe was the 2004 International Nanny Association Nanny of the Year, and she says it all comes down to curiosity.

"They are explorers," LaRowe says. "To them, it's not playing with poop. They have no concept of 'it's dirty' or socially unacceptable to do."

The good news: This behavior generally is limited to infants and toddlers.

"It certainly is not indicative of any deep-seated or underlying psychological disorder in infants and toddlers," says Dr. Andy Clark, a pediatrician at an urgent care facility in North Dallas and pediatrics expert at JustAnswer.com. Past that age group, Clark says parents should be concerned, but its "exceedingly rare."

Tips on putting an end to it:

1. Don't get emotional. "Address poop play in as nonemotional a tone as possible," LaRowe says. "A simple 'We don't play with poop, we put it in the potty' will be more effective then yelling and screaming at the child. The bigger the reaction, the more likely he is to do it again."

2. Change their diapers frequently. A child who is uncomfortable in a messy diaper is more likely to remove the diaper -- and find the poop.

3. Add extra tape to the diaper to keep it in place. Clark says a backward diaper can also thwart a particularly curious tot. A sleep sack or footed pajamas can help with kids who tackle the diaper during naptime.

4. Keep them occupied. "When their hands are busy exploring a toy, they're less likely to explore their diaper," LaRowe says.

5. Make them help with clean up. "From putting dirty clothes in the hamper to washing his bum in the bath, let him experience the clean-up process," LaRowe says. "In doing so, he may be discouraged from playing again."

6. When nothing else works, time will. "I assure you they will outgrow this disgusting, but quite normal, period of artistic expression pretty quickly," Clark says.

Every day, at any hour, kids in America can spin a dial or log on and land on a kid-friendly radio station with great beats. No surprise -- its antennae are shaped like mouse ears.

With a morning show that offers up an alternative to the morning zoo format available in most markets, daytime shows for the preschool set and a steady rotation of celebrity interviews, call-in contests and listener feedback, Radio Disney is one station still devoid of sex and drug references -- but they've got the rock and roll.

So how do they meet the demands of the tween target audience, satisfy parents and still fill in some programming for kids as young as 3? ParentDish talked to the station's creative director, Ernest "Ernie D." Martinez, a father of three kids ranging from 3 years old to 14, via a phone interview about the new Disney generation's music.

ParentDish: Is it a big challenge to have such a wide range of ages listening to you?
Ernest "Ernie D." Martinez.: Yes! It's a big challenge -- mainly because my goal every time I go on the air is not just to entertain the kids but also to entertain the parents.
Rotting ladders on Adventure Playsets have prompted a recall of more than a quarter of a million pieces in the United States and Canada.

Recall of Young Artist Easels, sold by MacPherson's/Art Alternatives. Credit: CPSC

A chalkboard on 10,000 Young Artist Easels sold by MacPherson's has tested above federal limits for lead allowable in children's products, prompting a recall.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the company has put out a voluntary recall, asking consumers to take the easels away from their kids until a replacement chalkboard can be sent to them.
The National Institutes of Health warn that lead poisoning is especially dangerous in kids. Even low levels of lead have been linked to lower IQ scores in kids, while higher levels are linked to anemia, muscle weakness and brain damage.

Parents can call MacPherson's at 866-319-5335 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Pacific time, Monday through Friday for a replacement, or e-mail them at recall@macphersonart.com.
When Keith and Brooke Desserich learned their daughter Elena had pediatric brain cancer, they were also told she had only 135 days to live. She made it to 256.

Nearly every day has been recorded by the Desserichs in "Notes Left Behind," a book first published by the family at a small press and sold as a fund-raiser.

Now the book has been republished, this time by publishing giant Harper Collins, and is filled with greater detail. A journal of Elena's last days -- written for her younger sister, Gracie -- the book brings two parents' love for their child from the abstract, unconditional love we all feel, to the simple joy of reading bedtime stories and singing lullabies.
Continue reading 'Notes Left Behind' Dad Says It's All About The Smaller Moments

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Alert: 'My Baby Soother' Pacifier is a Choking Hazard

Filed under: In The News, Alerts & Recalls
There's no company recall, but the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has put out a warning to parents to stop using the "My Baby Soother" pacifier.

The pacifiers were distributed by T & L Trading Corp., of Brooklyn, N.Y., but in a press release, the CPSC says the company has "refused to recall the pacifiers," prompting the government warning instead.

The pacifiers pose a choking hazard to kids who use them because the nipples can easily separate from the base. That means they don't meet federal standards, according to the CPSC. Sold for about $1, mostly around the New York metropolitan area from 2007 through 2009, the pacifiers have a ring-shaped handle and a blue, pink, red, white or yellow heart-shaped mouth guard with two ventilation holes.

Consumer Reports warns parents to check pacifiers on a regular basis anyway to ensure the nipple is still firmly attached to the base and the nipple has not cracked. Says Consumer Reports, "Check them carefully and often, and if you discover these problems, throw them away. Some manufacturers recommend replacing them every four weeks."

Because this is a government warning rather than a company recall, the CPSC has no information on a refund for the "My Baby Soother. However, parents are being urged to immediately discard the pacifiers, while retailers are being told to remove them from store shelves.
What's quickly apparent about the four Welch siblings in their powerful new memoir, "The Kids Are All Right," is that these are "kids" in age only.
Ages 4 to 16 when their father died in a car crash, Amanda, Liz, Dan and Diana Welch learned one month later that their mother, soap opera star Ann Williams, who appeared in "Loving," "The Edge of Night" and countless other soaps, has been diagnosed with cancer.

The "kids" quickly take on adult roles -- driving without a license to shop for groceries, helping chose their father's coffin, paying back their cheapskate uncle for the cost of burying their mother, cleaning their mother's colostomy bags.
An international treaty signed by the United States in 1993 was supposed to safeguard international adoptions, but some American adoption agencies may be skirting the treaty due to a loophole in the law.

Dubbed the Hague Adoption Convention, the U.S. State Department describes the treaty as a means to "prevent the abduction, sale of, or traffic in children." State Department officials say "it works to ensure that intercountry adoptions are in the best interests of children." To keep them honest, the State Department accredits American adoption agencies to handle adoptions from other countries which have signed onto the treaty.
First introduced in 2008, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the bill last week to create Harvey Milk Day in honor of the first openly gay person to be elected to a high office of a major American city.

According to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle, the newspaper from Milk's adopted hometown, he's just the second California citizen to be awarded such an honor. Milk served as the city's Supervisor.

Last year's movie that won Sean Penn an Academy Award for his portrayal of Milk had increased the pressure on Sacramento to get the bill passed, and gay rights groups have spent the days since Schwarzenegger brandished his pen celebrating.
Baby food maker Plum Organics has issued a voluntary recall of a portion of the Apple and Carrot Baby Food in Portable Pouches currently on shelves.

According to a company press release, an incorrect mix of the apples and carrots in one particular batch of the food created a risk for botulism contamination.

Food-borne botulism represents 15 percent of the cases of botulism in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and it can be fatal. Often associated with home canning mishaps, the creation of Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria which causes botulism most often crops up when low-acid content foods are canned. Although Plum Organics' food scientist Dr. Paul Gerhardt said there was a minimal risk in this case, he admitted this batch does not meet the FDA's guidelines for proper acidity level.
Continue reading Plum Organics Recalls Baby Food

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Embryo Adoption Gaining Favor

Close to 70 percent of Americans say they favor donating embryos to another couple. For parents dealing with fertility issues who still have the option of pregnancy, this could be a variation on adoption.

According to a story that appeared on Reuters, American adults were queried in a survey dubbed "Public Opinion Regarding the Disposition of Frozen Human Embryos." The most significant responses for parents centered around their feelings about the disposition of human embryos not used by parents undergoing fertility treatment.

One in five Americans, some 19.5 percent, said they'd prefer the embryos be used for research, while 68.6 percent said they'd be in favor of donation, an adoption of the embryo by another family.

The survey was conducted by Nightlight Christan Adoptions. The nonprofit organization lists its mission as providing "domestic, international, and embryo adoption services to families in all 50 states." Overall funding came from the United States Department of Health and Human Services, which last month awarded a grant to the National Embryo Donation Center in Knoxville, Tenn., to broaden its campaign to heighten public awareness of embryo donation and adoption.
