Tootie's going to be a mom!
Pregnancy & Birth, Bump Watch, Media
You take the good, you take the bad, you take them all, and there you have ... remember The Facts of Life? Well, apparently Kim Fields, the actress who played the adorably precocious "Tootie," does: she's expecting her first child with boyfriend Christopher Morgan this coming May."It is amazing, surreal," says Fields, 37. "For as maternal as I've felt all my life, it still has the 'Wow!' factor."
They don't yet know the gender of the baby; however, they already have names: "If she's a girl, Aria Grace," said Fields, "and if he's a boy, Sebastian Alexander."
Great news -- congratulations to the happy couple!
Vacation pics of the Pitt-Jolie Family in Cambodia
Fun & Activities, Celeb Kids, Life & Style, Celeb Parenting, That's Entertainment
People.com is currently featuring a photo gallery of Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and their children on a recent trip to Cambodia, the native country of their eldest child. The gallery shows the family touring the country, this being the first time that Maddox, the couple's son, has truly understood that this is his native land. "He recognizes himself in the people, which is a wonderful thing to see ... Sometimes he'll even show me things as if I've never been there," says Jolie. "He knows I'm happy to hear about it. He'll explain to me, 'Oh, yes, Cambodian mothers always feed their kids this.' And I'll say, 'Really? That's fascinating. I didn't know that.' "Angelina has created a foundation, the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Project (named after her son), established for "conservation and economic development in Cambodia."
In this day and age where the media is filled with images of young women partying, flashing private parts to the camera, and generally behaving badly, it's certainly refreshing to see images of a young mother enjoying her family's company. Be sure to check these photos out. They are positively beautiful.
Teaching my 2-1/2 year old about the first Christmas, you know, so she understands
"Okay, Alex? I want to tell you a story about the very first Christmas. Come sit on my lap."She sits.
"Okay, so once, a long, long time ago, there was a woman named Mary. And one day, an angel came down from heaven..."
"What's heaven?"
"Oh, heaven? Well, heaven is ... well ... forget heaven. An angel came to visit Mary. And the angel said, 'Mary, you have a baby in your tummy.'"
"Like Auntie Tessa!"
"Yes, just like Auntie Tessa. And the angel said, "Mary, your baby will be very, very special..."
"Auntie Tessa's baby is very, very special."
"Yes, I know..."
"VERY special."
"Yes, Alex I know. So anyway, the baby grew and grew inside of Mary's tummy, and then it was time to have the baby. But when it was time, Mary and her husband Joseph were traveling..."
Flickr Minicards: Think Small, Share Big
Pregnancy & Birth, Money & Work, Fun & Activities, Media, That's Entertainment
Okay, I think this is one of the coolest little ideas I've seen in a long time.Say you meet someone socially, at, say, a play date, or a parent-teachers meeting, and you want to exchange contact info without giving them all your work details (or, perhaps, you're a stay-at-home parent). Or maybe you've just given birth, or adopted, and you want a creative way to share the big news that won't break the bank, and yet does so in a personal, intimate manner.
Enter Flickr Minicards. These clever cards, about half the width of a regular business card, are made by using images you pick from your personal Flickr photography account. You can use up to 100 images (there are 100 cards per pack), and the application allows you to adjust the cropping so the best part of your photographs show. Then, simply add the text you'd like on the back of the card, and voila -- for US$ 19.99, 100 custom cards are sent to your doorstep. And when I say "doorstep," I mean your doorstep, too -- they ship internationally.
Just imagine: cards with your contact information and your family's image, so that teachers/other parents don't forget who you or your child is! Birth announcements with a beautiful black and white shot of your baby on the front, and her birthday, birthweight and name on the back! Adoption announcements, with an image of you meeting your child for the first time on front ...

Would you let your daughter wear this t-shirt?
Development, Media, Kid Decor & Style
Yesterday, as I was doing some of my usual surfing of the blogosphere, I came across an article featuring the t-shirt you see here. At first, as I read the words, I thought to myself, "yeah, okay, this t-shirt isn't in the best of taste, but whatever, you know? To each her own."Then, I read on. Turns out the t-shirt is being sold by dELiA's, a boutique that targets pre-teen, tween and teenage girls.
Hmm.
Now, I know I'm pretty uptight when it comes to raising my kid, so I'll go ahead and calmly and coolly admit right now that I'm one of those moms that would rather have her child walk naked out of her house, than wear a t-shirt like this one in public.
Ahem.
I understand, however, that this just may be me. What about you? Would you allow your daughter to wear this?

People.com readers help Brad Pitt with his diaper rash problem
Celeb Kids, Life & Style, Media
Okay, wait ... obviously, Brad Pitt doesn't have diaper rash. However, it turns out baby Shiloh has horrible diaper rash, according to the interview he gave Esquire magazine: "Shiloh's got horrible diaper rash, poor thing. Same with Zahara when we picked her up in Ethiopa. ... We've tried everything – every cream, every salve, every natural product. We haven't found the magic ointment. Yet." So People.com asked its readers to come up with suggestions. The most popular recommendation? Boudreaux's Butt Paste -- apparently most people swear by it. Be sure to read the article to catch the rave reviews.
As for me? I was a big believer in Burt Bees Diaper Ointment, myself -- it used to clear Alex's rashes up in no time flat.
What about you -- what's your best diaper rash secret?
Anna Nicole Smith's son dies, daughter born
Pregnancy & Birth, Bump Watch, Celeb Kids, Media
Some mixed news via CNN.com: Former Playboy Playmate Anna Nicole Smith, known most recently from her stint as a TrimSpa spokesmodel, lost her son yesterday in the Bahamas. The 20-year-old's death was sudden, but no further details have been given surrounding his death. "We have yet to learn the cause of death but do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor," said her lawyer, Howard K. Stern, in the statement. "Anna Nicole is absolutely devastated by the loss of her son. He was her pride and joy and an amazing human being."This news comes just days after Smith gave birth to a healthy daughter, on Thursday.
Condolences to the Smith family for their loss, and congratulations for their new addition.

Oprah Winfrey names the girls to attend her free school
Development, Life & Style, Media
You know, I want to believe that Oprah is just all hype, but she's making it really impossible to. Ecorazzi (a blog on the latest in green gossip -- how cool is that?) is reporting that Oprah has named the first 73 girls to attend a school in South Africa that she helped build. According to the BBC, "it will eventually teach 450 girls who show academic talent and leadership but whose families cannot fund schooling. The school aims to employ advanced education techniques, and communication technology that will allow Winfrey to teach from Chicago."Now THAT's a great story. Congratulations to the girls, and congratulations to Oprah. I love news of people making the world a better place.
