The gallery shows the family touring the country, this being the first time that Maddox, the couple's son, has truly understood that this is his native land. "He recognizes himself in the people, which is a wonderful thing to see ... Sometimes he'll even show me things as if I've never been there," says Jolie. "He knows I'm happy to hear about it. He'll explain to me, 'Oh, yes, Cambodian mothers always feed their kids this.' And I'll say, 'Really? That's fascinating. I didn't know that.' "

Angelina has created a foundation, the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Project (named after her son), established for "conservation and economic development in Cambodia."

In this day and age where the media is filled with images of young women partying, flashing private parts to the camera, and generally behaving badly, it's certainly refreshing to see images of a young mother enjoying her family's company. Be sure to check these photos out. Or maybe you've just given birth, or adopted, and you want a creative way to share the big news that won't break the bank, and yet does so in a personal, intimate manner.

Enter Flickr Minicards. These clever cards, about half the width of a regular business card, are made by using images you pick from your personal Flickr photography account. You can use up to 100 images (there are 100 cards per pack), and the application allows you to adjust the cropping so the best part of your photographs show. Then, simply add the text you'd like on the back of the card, and voila -- for US$ 19.99, 100 custom cards are sent to your doorstep. And when I say "doorstep," I mean your doorstep, too -- they ship internationally.

Just imagine: cards with your contact information and your family's image, so that teachers/other parents don't forget who you or your child is! Birth announcements with a beautiful black and white shot of your baby on the front, and her birthday, birthweight and name on the back! Adoption announcements, with an image of you meeting your child for the first time on front ...

(... thanks to Jen for the tip!)

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Would you let your daughter wear this t-shirt?

Filed under: Development/Milestones: Babies, Media, Decor
Yesterday, as I was doing some of my usual surfing of the blogosphere, I came across an article featuring the t-shirt you see here. At first, as I read the words, I thought to myself, "yeah, okay, this t-shirt isn't in the best of taste, but whatever, you know? To each her own."

Then, I read on. Turns out the t-shirt is being sold by dELiA's, a boutique that targets pre-teen, tween and teenage girls.

Hmm.

Now, I know I'm pretty uptight when it comes to raising my kid, so I'll go ahead and calmly and coolly admit right now that I'm one of those moms that would rather have her child walk naked out of her house, than wear a t-shirt like this one in public.

Ahem.

I understand, however, that this just may be me. What about you? Would you allow your daughter to wear this?

(Via Feministing)

Permalink | Email this | Comments

People.com readers help Brad Pitt with his diaper rash problem

Filed under: Celeb Kids, Life & Style, Media
Okay, wait ... obviously, Brad Pitt doesn't have diaper rash. However, it turns out baby Shiloh has horrible diaper rash, according to the interview he gave Esquire magazine: "Shiloh's got horrible diaper rash, poor thing. Same with Zahara when we picked her up in Ethiopa. ... We've tried everything - every cream, every salve, every natural product. We haven't found the magic ointment. Yet."

So People.com asked its readers to come up with suggestions. The most popular recommendation? Boudreaux's Butt Paste -- apparently most people swear by it. The 20-year-old's death was sudden, but no further details have been given surrounding his death. "We have yet to learn the cause of death but do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor," said her lawyer, Howard K. Stern, in the statement. "Anna Nicole is absolutely devastated by the loss of her son. He was her pride and joy and an amazing human being."

This news comes just days after Smith gave birth to a healthy daughter, on Thursday.

Condolences to the Smith family for their loss, and congratulations for their new addition.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Introducing That's Fit

Filed under: Health & Safety: Babies, Nutrition: Health, Playground Bureau, Media
There's a new blog in town: That's Fit, the newest member of the Weblogs Inc. family, brings you tips, tricks and news for healthy living every day. According to the BBC, "it will eventually teach 450 girls who show academic talent and leadership but whose families cannot fund schooling. The school aims to employ advanced education techniques, and communication technology that will allow Winfrey to teach from Chicago."

Now THAT's a great story. Apparently, this is one role she's going to have to seriously prepare for: "I never even babysat," she says. "The only time I've changed a diaper is when my friend, who just had a baby, called and said, 'Come over, you need to practice.'"

Martin also says recently she was in awe of the mother of three-year-old triplets who were on set during her latest gig: "I looked at the mother, who was taking care of these three little babies, and I thought, 'I can't imagine how demanding that must be. I'm just going to get one. According to the article, the couple "had kept their separation a secret from his coworkers and even his parents, and that he and his ex - whom he considers 'an extraordinary woman' and 'the greatest mom in the world' - are on good terms." They have two children.

My favourite part of this story, however, how he described his and his ex-wife's philosophy on parenting: "Our No. 1 focus is our kids and parenting," Garrett says "We will always be friends because we will never be single parents. We will always be two parents."

You know, it's never good when a couple splits, but I have to say, it's certainly heartening when they do it gracefully.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Dooce reviews The Ghost in the House

Filed under: Your Pregnancy, Health & Safety: Babies, Playground Bureau, Media, That's Entertainment
If you've ever read Dooce by Heather Armstrong (and really, who hasn't), you know that her writing is at times funny and entertaining, and at others, raw and revealing. A couple of years ago, you may recall her painful journal entries describing her debilitating bout of post-partum depression -- I remember, at the time, being glued to her entries, and cheering her eventual recovery.

Because of her experience, Armstrong's review of the book The Ghost in the House, now appearing at AlphaMom, is particularly noteworthy, primarily because it's clear that Armstrong knows of what the author speaks. The book, written by award-winning journalist Tracy Thompson, describes the author's own experience with maternal depression -- and in her review, Armstrong shares her own insight into depression, having managed hers successfully for the past two years. An excerpt from Armstrong's review:

I also experienced what Thompson refers to as 'anger attacks,' and I threw heavy objects at walls and tore the front door off its hinge. I don't know yet what effect that behavior has had on my daughter, but it's safe to assume that if she grows up and figures out world peace that she won't cite that one time I threw a 32-ounce water bottle at her father as one of those moments when she saw the beauty in humankind.

Definitely a review worth checking out. And, by the way -- if you think you may be experiencing depression yourself, please, please get help.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Puck from MTV's The Real World a dad...again!

Filed under: Your Pregnancy, Celeb Kids, Media, That's Entertainment
Via People.com: David "Puck" Rainey, who first gained fame as the "spiky-haired, hygienically challenged bike messenger on MTV's third season of The Real World" is a dad again. The article attributes this new trend to the fact that many people are waiting until later to become parents, and therefore have more disposable income; however, that's not why Victoria Collins drapes her three-year-old in cashmere: "I don't have the time to search for discounts and bargains," she says. "I don't have time to search for that one cute thing in a really ugly store. And you know you're getting quality when you go to these higher-end places."

You know, as I started covering this story, I was all ready to become righteously indignant about how ridiculous it is to buy cashmere for a child, much less an infant. How this trend is so much more about parents feeling a need to advertise their status through their children than anything else. How perhaps they should take all that extra disposable income they seem to have, and sock it away in an education fund for their kids.

And then, I glanced over to the knitting project I'm in the middle of -- I'm in the process of knitting a sweater for Christmas for my 3-year-old niece who lives in San Francisco. When looking for wool for the project, I was adamant with the store clerk that the wool be machine-washable -- and she led me to Debbie Bliss Cashmerino -- a popular and machine-washable blend of cashmere and merino wools, which as it turns out, is wonderfully soft (after all, what kid likes a scratchy sweater?). The price didn't look to insane (as compared to some of the other wools that were for sale), so I bought it.

So, you know, it turns out I would by cashmere for a child (I say sheepishly). What about you -- would you buy cashmere for a child? The Esquire article, in referring to the "honour," says "being the offspring of a hyper fertile backup dancer and prematurely wilted flower is no excuse, but being 12 months almost is...As soon as you gain some dexterity, straighten out your hat."

Sean Preston is a good company -- singers Marc Anthony and Axl Rose also apparently made the list.

And yet...

... is it just me, or are you also seized by an irresistible urge to grab the publishers of Esquire and scream, "DUDES! We were talking about our kids, and during the conversation, because it naturally came up, I mentioned that Alex was adopted.

"Oooh, I'm sorry," she said, in all seriousness.

I admit I was taken aback. I've dealt with lots of weird reactions before about the fact that my husband and I adopted, but pity was definitely new to me. At the time, I brushed it off -- I said something like, "No, it's great!" and went on with my point, but weeks later, I'm still bothered by her reaction. I mean, what was she sorry for? That Alex's birthmother placed her for adoption? Was she presuming that I was infertile (as far as I know, I'm not), and she was expressing sympathy about that? Was she sorry that of all the prospective parents in the world, Alex got us? What???

What do you think that was all about? And how would you have reacted, had she said something similar to you?

Update: You are all so sweet -- presuming that she was apologizing for assuming Alex wasn't adopted. I'm afraid, however, that's not what she was saying -- her facial expression was definitely one of sympathy, not apology for a slip-up. Nonetheless, there's no denying she was trying to be kind.

As you were.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Traveling internationally with baby: now, harder than ever

Filed under: Places To Go, Health & Safety: Babies, Media
Going to be traveling with baby sometime soon? In light of yesterday foiled terrorist attack in Great Britain, you might want to seriously re-think your flight plans: getting past security with your diaper bag may be harder than ever. According to CNN.com, "a senior congressional source said it is believed the plotters planned to mix a British sports drink with a gel-like substance to make a potent explosive that could be ignited with an MP3 player or cell phone," and as such, the newest security measures taken by most airlines prohibit passengers from bringing any liquids into the cabin of the aircraft. Formertxmama wrote into Blogging Baby to share her experiences flying yesterday with her two children:

I traveled from Wisconsin to Montreal yesterday with two children under the age of four, and TSA took away my bottled water (I'm nursing!) and all of the baby food (Gerber, sealed) that I'd packed for my six-month-old. I was so enraged, watching them throw away my baby's food! The new restrictions are OUTRAGEOUS and completely restrictive for parents--anyone traveling this month should be warned!

Yeesh. Personally, I'm one of those people who gets to the airport hours ahead of time, to endure all of the security checkpoints with plenty of time to catch my flight -- because, as a nervous flyer, anything they do to make my flight safer in my mind is a good thing. I will say, however, that for the foreseeable future, my family is going to think long and hard before we fly with our two-year-old -- it's going to have to be a pretty necessary trip.

Thanks, Formertxmama. For what it's worth, I understand your ire; however, it makes me far angrier at the donuts who were planning the attack, than airport security for attempting to do their jobs.

For everyone else: fair warning. Out of curiosity, however, here's a question:

If you do have no choice but travel with your child, how will you plan on keeping your child entertained and happy for those long-haul flights? Any suggestions?

Permalink | Email this | Comments
