Dear Karla,
My son is turning 12 this year and I am noticing that his breath is getting foul. I want to do something to make this go away as it would crush me to find him one day embarrassed about it from getting picked on by kids at school, or even with the girls (not that I am ready to see him date). What can I do to help this problem without any type of medication?
Thanks,
Donna

Hi Donna,
This is a touchy subject, as halitosis (also known as bad breath) is not something anyone likes to have. Many parents are often shocked that their child has bad breath, but it is not an uncommon thing. In kids, it can be caused by something as simple as food debris and mucus secretions that accumulated on the tongue, in the nose and in between the teeth. So rule number one - get your child into the habit of brushing after every meal and flossing daily too. This is a great place to start.
Continue reading Bad Breath: Causes and Cures for Your Kid

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nutritional Parsley: More Than Just a Garnish

Stop throwing away the garnish! You know, the pretty sprig of parsley you put on your dinner guests' plates to make them look refined. Well, those green leaves have amazing nutritional properties that rival the rest of your meal.

Parsley comes in two forms: curly leaf and flat leaf. The one most commonly found at local markets is curly leaf. Here are 5 reasons to include this tasty herb in your day:

Dear Karla,
As the school season is coming to an end soon, so are my ideas on lunches. I think my kids are officially sandwiched out as I was never given the 'creative bug' in the food department. Can you provide me with some lunch ideas I can pack for my kids that don't require a huge mental effort on my part and are healthy too?
Tiana

Absolutely Tiana!
The key to packing a great lunch box for your kids is keeping an up-to-date list of food items always in your house. Here are some handy items I always like to keep on my grocery list:
Continue reading New Lunch-Box Recipe Ideas

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Lentil Vegetable Soup Recipe

Try this tasty, protein-rich dish. It's perfect for anyone - even if you're not vegetarian. Lentils are an amazing source of fibre, and add great taste and texture to many soups.

Supermarket and restaurant soups can be loaded with enough salt to fill your sodium quota for the entire day - or, even week. Instead, follow the recipe below to create a lower sodium soup base that your heart will thank you for and your taste buds won't even notice.
Spinach definitely worked for Popeye, its most famous advocate. While the rest of us aren't looking for bulging arms to chase down criminals, we can reap the rewards of this iron rich vegetable.

Spinach won't directly make you stronger, but the iron boost it gives your body helps red blood cells in their delivery of oxygen, giving you more energy.

On average, one cup of raw spinach contains 1 milligram of the metal, while one cup of cook contains 6.8 milligrams. Whether you dip it in salsa or throw on sour cream, quesadillas are the easy to make snack and comfort food many families cannot go without. But if your worried about packing on the pounds when devouring your favourite Mexican feast, here is a recipe that's not only healthier, but less messy too!

You'd be surprised how many calories and fat a regular tortilla can hold. Take the Bacon Ranch Chicken Quesadilla from Chilis Restaurant, containing: 1550 calories, 94 grams of fat and more than double the recommended daily sodium for an adult.

This doesn't mean you have to remove quesadillas from your family's life. Use the recipe below to create a healthy snack that contains a boost of fiber from fresh vegetables and whole grain tortilla, combined with the delicious taste of lower fat cheeses and fresh parsley.
Remember when you were a child and your stomach was tossing and turning? Your parents probably brought you a tasty liquid cure - old fashioned ginger ale.

Ginger planted its root in Asian and has long been used as a stomach aid and in other medicines. The tasty tuber is also popular in cooking, commonly dried into a spice, or chopped up and cooked in stir fries.

It is the active components of the ginger root that make it effective in dealing with nausea and pain. The components include the oil and pungent phenol compounds: gingerols and shogaols.
Continue reading 10 Ways to Add More Ginger to Your Family's Diet

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Help! My teenager daughter has decided to follow a group of her friends and skip out on all items that come from animal meat. I am OK if she cuts back a bit, but myself grew up with agriculture all around me, so am a bit confused. Because she is still growing tall I am concerned that she may be lacking nutrition from doing this. Should there be any concerns I have or things I can help educate her on?
Kathy

Great question Kathy. It's important for parents to know what their child's body needs to make sure their growth is not impaired, especially when your child is embarking on a diet unfamiliar to your family. A recent survey shows that teen vegetarianism is on the rise, tripling in the last ten years. In 1997 1 percent of teens were active vegetarians; today that number is up to 3 per cent.
Continue reading Help! With cool tropical fruits and a touch of sweet honey it is hard for most kids to resist.

The main ingredient in this recipe is papaya, a fruit which has served as a digestive aid for decades. A source of the natural enzyme papain, it aids digestion and can reduce inflammation in the gut, too. The addition of pineapple to the recipe adds another proteolytic enzyme, bromelain, packed tight in its inner core - the part most people press down their garburator. Enzymes work to break food down into smaller digestible units, easing common discomforts like bloating.
Christopher Columbus called it the "fruit of angels." Others were less poetic merely referring to it as the "big melon." But today, papaya is best known as the fruit for digestion.

Cultivated in Mexico, this nutrient packed fruit has been used medicinally for centuries. Orange in colour, smooth and soft in texture, ripe papayas are very sweet and house pepper-tasting black seeds (that most people avoid). And yes, they can help with your stomach problems.
Now that this product has been available for some time, more information has flooded the market -- which can add to the confusion when you're trying to decide if it's the right product for your family.

First, a few basics on agave nectar: It originates from various species of agave (including blue agave, which plays a role in the production of tequila). It can also be referred to as a syrup, as it is a commercially available sweetener similar in appearance to different forms of liquid honey. To produce agave nectar, juice is expressed from the core of the agave plant, which is then filtered and heated so the polysaccharides are broken down into fructose units and the nectar is sweeter to taste.

But is it good for you?
Hi Stacey,
It sounds like your friends have picked up on a really hot topic, and one I take very seriously. The ingredient your friends are talking about is parabens, and they're right to be concerned. Studies have shown that parabens can have some scary effects on our health.
Probably not -- but it should! Oats are incredibly versatile and an excellent source of fibre, which is a critical component of our daily diet.

Out of habit, we tend to add wheat flour to much of our baking, and hardly think twice that regular large-flake oats can be ground into flour form as well. In fact, when oats are ground up, they also make a great replacement for porridge or cream of wheat. In countries such as Britain, oats are used for brewing beer. And in Latin America, they are ground up for a sweet beverage.

How Can Oats Improve Your Health?
There has been much talk about the health benefits of whole grains. They're a great source of fibre, they can help lower your cholesterol -- the benefits go on and on. But the question that many people struggle with is, "Which whole grains are the best?" Well, it really all comes down to fibre.
Continue reading Why Your Family Should Eat More Oats

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Truth About MSG: Not a Kid-Friendly Ingredient

Filed under: Health & Safety: Babies, Nutrition: Health, Mealtime, Dear Karla
Dear Karla,
I have been hearing many of my friends (who are also parents) commenting on MSG and how they are trying to avoid it, as it is a really nasty ingredient and not something they want their family eating. As I have tried to gather information on it, it seems like it's maybe not that bad. Could you share your thoughts on MSG, please? Should I really be avoiding it? Thanks, Christie

Hi Christie,
This is a question that I have been asked a lot over the years. At times, I have tried to find the truth about MSG and been turned away, as it seems that companies really don't want to divulge all the information that we need in order to make an informed decision as consumers and parents. But I have been able to put together some solid information that may help you understand this ingredient better.

MSG is also known as monosodium glutamate. This can appear on a food label under many names, such as sodium glutamate, MSG, monosodium glutamate, gelatin, glutamate, hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) and glutamic acid, among others. (For a very in-depth list of products that contain hidden MSG, check out this site.)
Continue reading The Truth About MSG: Not a Kid-Friendly Ingredient

Permalink | Email this | Comments

A Colourful Easter Treat Recipe for Your Junior Chef

Filed under: Activities: Babies, Holidays, Nutrition: Health
Ah, Easter. That magical time of year when candy companies take all things "spring" and turn them into chocolate-covered treats that whip small children (and, yes, adults) into a sugar-driven frenzy. But this year, why not save your pennies and try something new? If you're interested in starting a new tradition this year -- something that will increase your family bonding time and is a bit healthier than loading up on commercial Easter treats -- add this recipe to your repertoire.

Children love to get their hands dirty -- especially in the kitchen. This recipe does not require any cutting or baking, so it is considered "child-friendly." Note: A stove top is required, so please be with your child to assist them in the stirring process.
Continue reading A Colourful Easter Treat Recipe for Your Junior Chef

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Boost Your Family's Health With Nutritious Garlic

If you're looking for a great way to add some flavour to your family's meals, garlic should be at the top of your grocery list. While it's often associated with dishes like garlic bread and Caesar salad, you can add garlic to just about any meal for a nice flavour boost -- as well as some great health benefits.

Garlic is a member of the onion family, used not only for cooking purposes but for medicinal purposes, too. Aside from helping the body to fight cancer and cardiovascular diseases, it also acts as an anti-inflammatory and has anti-viral properties. You could say that each clove can be used to eat or treat. The white paper-like coating that covers each clove is not edible, however the leaves and flowers around the garlic head are. And believe it or not, the odour normally associated with garlic is actually what makes it so healthy!
Continue reading Boost Your Family's Health With Nutritious Garlic

Permalink | Email this | Comments
