We've known for years that secondhand smoke puts the health of exposed children at risk. The severity of these risks, however, are still being discovered.

Researchers reported in late December that children regularly exposed to secondhand tobacco smoke at home are more likely to develop emphysema in adulthood. Scientists at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health looked at CT scans of 1,781 nonsmoking adults and their smoke exposure during childhood. The adults with more exposure showed more emphysema-like lung changes in the scans.
Continue reading Secondhand Smoke at Home Leads to Increased Risk of Emphysema

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Product Recall: Children's Necklaces

Filed under: Health & Safety: Babies, Alerts & Recalls

If your princess likes to get decked out in baubles, take note. The Consumer Product Safety Commission and F.A.F. Inc. have announced a voluntary recall of certain children's metal necklaces.

The pieces, shaped like a metal crown or frog pendant on a metal link chain necklace, contain high levels of cadmium. Cadmium is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects. No injuries have been reported, but consumers should stop using the necklaces immediately.

Sold exclusively at Walmart, the packaging includes the words "The Princess and the Frog" and includes the following model numbers and UPC codes:

Crown	Model # 4616-4187	UPC # 72783367144

Frog	Model # 4616-4190 UPC # 72783367147

You should return the recalled jewelry to any Walmart store for a full refund or a free replacement product. For more information, contact F.A.F. Inc. at 800-949-3311 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on weekdays or visit the company's Web site at faf.com.
Watch how your little one gets around these days. There have been numerous stroller recalls lately, and here's one more to note: The Consumer Product Safety Commission, Health Canada and Regal Lager Inc. have announced a voluntary recall of CYBEX strollers.

The stroller's hinge mechanism poses a fingertip amputation and laceration hazard to the child when the consumer is unfolding or opening the stroller. There has been one report of a child placing his finger in the hinge, resulting in finger fracture.

The recall includes Ruby, Onyx and Topaz models of CYBEX umbrella strollers. (The word "CYBEX" is printed on the side of the recalled stroller.) Parents should stop using the stroller immediately and contact the company for a free hing cover retrofit kit. Do so by calling 800-593-5522 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on weekdays or visit the Web site at regallager.com.

Should we test for birth defects? Would you control the sex of your baby if you could? Does a surrogate mother have no rights to the baby? And now, researchers at the Oregon National Primate Research Center raise a brand new sci-fi-like question: Can a baby have three biological parents?

Apparently, it's possible, but that doesn't mean it should be done. According to an editorial in The New York Times, the researchers were looking for ways to eliminate inheritable diseases through maternal DNA, and have created baby monkeys with one father and two mothers. They effectively combined DNA from multiple parents to form one healthy egg, replacing any defective DNA from one mother and replacing it with genetic material from another female's egg.

The researchers say the procedure is also likely to work on humans, giving one baby three parents. While the courts are still busy working out modern-age custody issues, this DNA manipulation would add another wrinkle to the baby blanket.

Christmas may be the farthest thing from your mind right now, but if your baby boy has a Santa suit from Macy's, you may want to get back in the spirit for a moment. The Consumer Product Safety Commission and Macy's have announced a voluntary recall of First Impressions boy's three-piece Santa sets.

Loose buttons on the suit's jacket may easily detach, posing a choking hazard to young children. There have been no injuries reported.

The recall includes sets marked sizes 0 to 24 months, with a slew of tracking numbers. To compare your suits with the recalled suits, click here and check the label sewn into the side seam of the top and bottom pieces.

Consumers should immediately remove the buttons from the jacket to eliminate the choking hazard or return the garment to any Macy's or U.S. Navy Exchange store for a full refund. You may also contact Macy's at 888-257-5949 between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. on weekdays or visit the company's Web site at macys.com.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Product Recall: Horse Toy Figures

Round up the stables! The Consumer Product Safety Commission and Blip Toys have announced a voluntary recall of Nature Wonders HD Pinto Horse toy figures.

The paint coating the horse's pretty mane contains excessive levels of lead and violates the federal lead paint standard. No injuries have been reported.

The recalled figures were sold in Walmart stores nationwide and the model number is 92093, which was printed on the retail tag wrapped around the horse's leg. If you no longer have the tag, compare the horse to the photo above.

Consumers should immediately take the recalled toys away from children and contact Blip Toys to receive a free replacement toy. Do so by calling 888-405-7696 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CST on weekdays, or visit their Web site at bliptoys.com.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Product Recall: RadioShack Toy Helicopters

Attention air traffic control, there's been a helicopter recall. The Consumer Product Safety Commission and RadioShack have announced a voluntary recall of Danbar Knight Hawk toy helicopters.

The recall comes after a store demo toy caught fire while it was charging. (No injuries or property damage have been reported.) Turns out, the battery housing can overheat while charging, posing a fire hazard.

The helicopter can be identified by model number 006047 marked on the back of the controller and the Knight Hawk 3D logo on the front of the controller.

Consumers should immediately take the helicopters away from children and return the toy to the nearest RadioShack store for a full refund. You can contact RadioShack at 800-843-7422 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CST on weekdays, or visit the firm's Web site at radioshack.com.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

16-Year-Old British Boy Could be Youngest to Have Sex Change

Bradley Cooper, who turned 16 last week, wishes to be called Ria. He's been dressing as a girl since he was 12, borrowing his mother's lipstick and clothes from his three older sisters.

His wish may soon come true, as the Hull and East Yorkshire NHS Trust, a public health care provider, is said to have agreed to pay for his £10,000 (about $14,000) sex change operation.

Cooper would be the youngest sex change patient to date, and there is plenty of controversy surrounding the topic -- not just because of his age, but also over the fact that the NHS would pay for the procedure with tax payers' dollars.

"When there are people dying of cancer who are told the drugs they need are too expensive, it is wrong to be funding less urgent procedures like this," Mark Wallance, from the TaxPayers' Alliance, tells the Daily Mail.
Does your teen have high cholesterol? Before you say, "Of course not," consider this: A national survey of blood-cholesterol levels in U.S. teenagers found that more than 20 percent of 12- to 19-year-olds had at least one abnormal blood fat level. And that number jumped to 43 percent among adolescents who are considered obese.
Once thought to be a condition isolated to the middle-aged and elderly, doctors now realize high cholesterol is a problem among the young, as well. Worried experts point out that this is just another health threat posed by the nation's growing level of obesity -- others include high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis and more.

"The current epidemic of childhood obesity makes this a matter of significant and urgent concern," says Ashleigh May, an epidemic intelligence service officer with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's division for heart disease and stroke prevention, who led the analysis.

It's no secret: Everybody wants to be happy. So, in an attempt to put a permanent smile on her face, author and mother of two Gretchen Rubin spent a year testing the wisdom of the ages.

She looked at scientific studies, works from greats such as Aristotle and Epicurus and even took notes from pop culture (Oprah included). Keeping tabs on each part of her journey, Rubin now presents "The Happiness Project" (Harper), sharing her experiences -- and results -- as she tests out various theories and advice.

ParentDish spoke with Rubin about her quest to discover the key to happiness, what she found that works and what she wasn't even willing to try.

ParentDish: Quick, what's one simple thing you found that parents can do to increase their happiness?
Gretchen Rubin: Get more sleep. There's a lot of scientific evidence that people don't get enough sleep and that it has a bigger impact than you think. The more I wrote about it, the more I became zealous about getting enough sleep.
Continue reading Come On, Get Happy - Author Tells You How to Have More Fun

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Product Recall: Graco Strollers

Filed under: Health & Safety: Babies, Baby Essentials, Alerts & Recalls

While drop-side cribs continue to cause concern, strollers are proving just as faulty. After Maclaren pulled more than a million strollers last November, Graco is now working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to announce a voluntary recall of about 1.5 million strollers.

Like the Maclaren recall, the hinges on the stroller's canopy pose a risk of fingertip amputation and laceration hazards to the child when the consumer is opening or closing the canopy. There have been seven reports of children placing their fingers in the hinge mechanism while the canopy was being opened or closed, and, as a result, there have been five fingertip amputations and two fingertip lacerations.

The recall involves various models, so click here to check your stroller's model number against the recalled list. Consumers should stop using the recalled strollers and contact Graco to receive a free protective cover repair kit. The company can be reached at 800-345-4109 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays or at gracobaby.com.

Back in December, a few moms fessed up to still using their Maclaren strollers, despite the recall. Now that there's a second case (with even more strollers), will parents continue to ignore the warnings?
There has been yet another recall of cribs. This time, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is working with Dorel Asia SRL, of Barbados, to announce a voluntary recall to replace drop side and non-drop side cribs that pose suffocation and strangulation hazards to infants and toddlers.

The recall comes after the death of a 6-month-old child from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who became entrapped and strangled in a crib after the drop-side hardware broke. The parents had tried to repair the crib themselves. There are 31 additional reports of drop-side-related incidents, six of which resulted in entrapment. In non-drop side cribs, there have been 36 other reports of the slats breaking, with seven of those resulting in bruises and scratches to children.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

California Lawmaker Pushes for Kids to Use Ski Helmets

Should there be a ski helmet law? Credit: Getty Images

In the mid-'90s, there was a surge of local laws mandating that children of a certain age wear a helmet while riding a bicycle. Now, California lawmakers are proposing a similar rule pertaining to ski slopes.

Last week, California Sen. Leland Yee introduced a bill that would require children under 18 to don a protective helmet. Failure to do so could result in a $25 fine. Leland drafted the bill after reviewing a study reporting that helmets can cut the risk of serious head injuries in children (15 and younger) in half.

While the bill has received much support, one lawmaker is opposed, claiming it's not up to the government to decide how people protect themselves.

It'll be weeks before the bill is passed or denied, but we must admit: We thought helmet rules were already strictly enforced by ski resorts. And even if they weren't, we couldn't imagine sending a child down a mountain without any sort of protective headgear.

If your family hits the slopes, tell us about your helmet-using habits.

On the heels of the largest crib recall in United States history (more then 2.1 million Stork Craft drop-side units), it should come as no surprise that even more similarly-opened cribs are the focus of another round of concern. This time, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Caramia Furniture and Mother Hubbard Cupboard's (of Canada) announced the voluntary recall of about 1,000 units.

Once again, the slats on the crib's drop-side can detach from the top and bottom rails, posing fall and entrapment hazards to the child. The recall includes Caramia "Diane" drop-side cribs -- you can determine if you have that model by checking the label affixed to the inside of the headboard of footboard. There have been 18 reports of slats detaching from the rails but no injuries have been reported.

Continue reading Product Recall: Even More Drop-Side Cribs

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Product Recall: Certain HappyTot and HappyBaby Pouch Meals

Filed under: Mealtime, Alerts & Recalls

You may need to change the dinner menu tonight. Nurture Inc's HAPPYTOT Stage 4 and HAPPYBABY Stage 1 and Stage 2 pouch meals have been voluntarily recalled due to a packaging defect. The pouches in question may swell or leak, causing a possible bacterial contamination.

No illnesses have been reported. To determine if the pouches on your shelves are part of the recall, look for the expiration date code: If the date is between November 2010 and January 2011, you should not serve the product. You can return them to their place of purchase for a full refund or contact the company at 212-374-2779 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays.
Check your kids' home libraries. There has been a voluntary recall of 'Big Rex and Friends' cloth books.

The book's cover is pictured in the photo on the left and has the ISBN of 031249260X or 9780312492601 printed on the back of the book.

A red plastic dot sewn in the book (shown in photo on the right) contains high levels of lead and is considered toxic if ingested by young children.

There have been no injuries reported but parents should immediately take away the book and contact the publisher, St. Martin's Press, for instructions on returning it for a full refund. Call the company at 800-347-9411 or visit their Web site at priddybooks.com/recall.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Product Recall: Toy Military Figurine

The toy's surface paint contains excessive levels of lead, violating the federal standard. While no injuries have been reported, consumers should take the toy away from children and contact the company for a full refund or replacement toy.
Maybe you got your child a cell phone because you wanted her to be armed in case of an emergency.

Or maybe you got it simply because you were tired of hearing her begging pleas. Whatever the reason, 27 percent of preteens (ages 9 to 12) and 75 percent of teens (ages 13 to 17) now have their own cell phones, says a report released last month by the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health. (Download the report in PDF form here.)

And while many parents (41 percent, to be exact) are concerned with the amount of time their children spend texting, there's another topic of concern: Sexting. A mash-up of sex and texting, sexting is when sexually explicit material is shared through a text message or cell phone photo.

Among children with cell phones, 87 percent reported using the devices to send and receive text messages. (There's no stat about how many admit to sending sexts.)
Continue reading Is Your Child Sexting?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

MSNBC Anchor: It Took A Serious Fall With My Baby To Change My Life

Filed under: Celeb Parents, Books for Kids, Celeb News & Interviews

It's been said before, motherhood is a balancing act. Unfortunately, MSNBC Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski found that out the hard way.

Working the night shift, back in the 1990s when she was with CBS news, Brzezinski would return home in the late mornings, relieve her babysitter and try to raise her two young kids on little to no sleep, and didn't stop to prioritize her life until she took a tragic fall down a flight of stairs -- while holding her four-month old baby.

Now, her two daughters are 11 and 13 years old, and Brzezinski's had time to reflect back on motherhood, jotting down her cautionary tale in her debut book "All Things at Once."

ParentDish spoke with the busy news anchor, via telephone, about the lowest moment in life and not always being a good mom.
Continue reading MSNBC Anchor: It Took A Serious Fall With My Baby To Change My Life

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Product Recall: Play Yards with Bassinets

Filed under: Health & Safety: Babies, Alerts & Recalls

The Dorel Juvenile Group is having a tough year's end. The company and the Consumer Product Safety Commission have issued another voluntary recall. This time, the focus is on play yards and includes the Safety 1st Disney Care Center Play Yard and the Eddie Bauer Complete Care Play Yard.
Continue reading Product Recall: Play Yards with Bassinets

Permalink | Email this | Comments
