Autism symptoms can range widely from delayed language abilities and social skills to behavioral issues. But despite the challenges, many people with autism go on to achieve success, some making worldwide contributions.

Are all sweeteners created equal? Princeton University researchers say high-fructose corn syrup causes more weight gain and belly fat than other sugars, but critics aren't sold on the findings of this sweet study.

The Princeton study publicized high-fructose corn syrup's negative effects on obesity, and science experts and industry veterans aren't pleased with the potential backlash, CNN reports.
Critics say the study places all the blame on high fructose corn syrup for making Americans fat, when, really, neither table sugar nor corn syrup is good for you.
Continue reading High-Fructose Corn Syrup Makes Us Fat, but Sugar is a Sweet Problem, Too

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Magazine's Popular Marriage Column Turns to Webisodes

Blame it on "The Marriage Ref." In 2010, it's no longer enough to simply read about marital disputes -- we need to watch them in action, too.

Since 1953, Ladies' Home Journal readers have turned to the popular column "Can This Marriage Be Saved?" And now, the magazine has embraced the Internet webisode by introducing online videos to the column, according to The New York Times.

The videos dramatize the column's first half with actors, actresses and a narrator illustrating a couple's predicament. Most of the topics of argument seem rather tame, such as a husband giving his wife the ultimatum of him or the dog, The Times reports.

To read the rest of the column, in which a therapist explains how the couple resolved its differences, viewers must click through the Ladies' Home Journal Web site.

"We like to think of 'Can This Marriage Be Saved?' as the original reality entertainment - a 'he said-she said' that lets spouses tell their stories to a therapist, who gives them advice and then reveals how the marriage turned out," Sally Lee, Ladies' Home Journal editor-in-chief, says in a statement in The Times.

A new bill, passed by the Florida Legislature and awaiting the governor's signature, bans adoption agencies from inquiring about potential parents' gun possessions, The Miami Herald reports.

Only two lawmakers voted against the bill in the Senate: Frederica Wilson (D-Miami), a longtime gun opponent, and Ted Deutch (D-Boca Raton), who discussed the state's discrimination against gay couples' rights to adopt.

This is just one of many recent victories for the National Rifle Association (NRA) in improving the right to own firearms in Florida. The group also backed a bill that would stop legislators from raiding a special trust fund that pays for concealed weapons permit regulations, which the governor plans to approve.

Continue reading Adoption Agencies Banned From Asking Parents About Guns

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Court Rules Parents Can Stop 'Sexting' Subjects From Facing Charges

Posing for a photograph, which then becomes the subject of a "sext," is not a criminal offense, according to the federal court of appeals.

The court finalized its first ruling concerning "sexting" earlier this week, The New York Times reports. This decision allows parents to block the prosecution of their children on child pornography charges for posing in photographs found on classmates' cell phones.

"Sexting," the sharing of sexual explicit material via text message, is a fairly new craze among teens and preteens, and has been causing controversy across numerous school districts.

The case that called for the new ruling, Miller v. Mitchell, began in 2008 in a Pennsylvania school, The Times reports. School officials found nude and semi-nude pictures of girls as young as 12 on students' cell phones. The officials took the phones and gave them to the Wyoming County District Attorney's Office.

Continue reading Court Rules Parents Can Stop 'Sexting' Subjects From Facing Charges

Permalink | Email this | Comments
