If you serve as short-order cook for a baby or toddler, chances are you are mopping the floor (or SHOULD be mopping the floor) about three times a day.

If that level of cleanliness seems impossible, check out the new Mini-Mop from OXO.

A replaceable sponge does the dirty work (so you can toss it when it gets grimy), and a telescoping handle means you don't have to bend over. Even better, the wringing mechanism means no one has to touch the aforementioned grimy sponge. And when your janitorial duties are over, the handle retracts so you can stash it under the sink. Done and done.
You may not be living in the midcentury ranch house of your dreams, but your kid's dolls can. The equally cool family of punch-out dolls is sold separately. See ya, Polly Pocket.
No one can argue, wood floors look great.

But with kids running around, and dispersing food and finger paint everywhere they go, they can mean a costly investment and a lot of maintenance.

Which is why the new wood-look porcelain tiles from Nemo Tile are such a revelation. The resemblance is uncanny -- right down to the textured grain -- but they will stand up to anything your brood can throw at them. And we mean literally throw at them.
The National Crayon Recycle Program has kept 53,000 pounds of castoff crayons from ending up in landfills. Those stubs, collected from schools and kids across the country, are then turned into brand new crayons ready for use by budding artists. Many recycled crayons are conglomerates of multiple colors and yield funky rainbow swirls when applied to paper, but for the purist child who believes the sky should be blue and the grass should be green, Eco Stars are where its at.
Every expectant mom, sometime in her first trimester, is faced with a moment when her clothes get a little tight. At that crossroads, many formerly stylish women will feel the urge to throw in the towel (i.e. wear sweatpants to work).

Wait -- don't give up! Style expert and fashion reporter Amy Tara Koch is here to help with her book "Bump it Up". Koch supplies a foolproof guide to each trimester, including tips, trick, and inspiring illustrations from industry stars (DVF, Kate Spade) and insiders (formerly pregnant editors of Vogue, W, and Glamour). Bye Bye fat pants, hello hot mama.
It goes without saying that you want your tot using utensils made from healthy plastic: no BPA, no PVC, no phthalates.

But here's an opportunity to go one step further with a material that's as earth-friendly as it is kid-friendly.

The new forks and spoons from Green Toys are made entirely of recycled plastic milk jugs (much like the ones you plow through as junior indulges his 20-ounce-a-day habit).

Check out their plates, cups, and bowls as well.

More and more, birth announcements are going the way of phone books. Meaning, due to the internet, you don't really need them. Within five minutes of being born, new babies are introduced to friends and relatives all over the globe via blast e-mails, text messages, and Facebook updates.

If you harken for a more thoughtful intro, but don't necessarily want to spend the time and money on a traditional mailing, consider the e-announcements from Cocodot. They have a wide range of beautiful designs, many including a spot to upload a photo of your little darling, or you can get creative and design your own.
Available for $29 for unlimited cards (for one year) at cocodot.com.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Storage Cubed

Come summer, swaddling a fussy baby can seem like a questionable move -- won't they swelter encased in all that blanket?

Not if you follow the age-old Australian tradition of using lightweight muslin wraps, which are far more breathable than traditional blankets, and can actually help keep baby cool while he's bundled up like a burrito.

This set of three makes a great shower or baby gift.
Child photographer Rachel Hudgins is a former film producer, so it's not surprising that her photos have a cinematic quality that makes them both beautiful artworks and treasured keepsakes. Now, for the first time, she is selling a few of her dreamiest shots as limited edition prints through The Mini Social. And even better, through the end of May, you can enter to win a private photo shoot for your own child, free of charge (the value is $1,100!), and Rachel will come to you. Talk about star treatment.

The school year is almost over, and soon you'll get a break from packing school lunches -- just in time to start packing camp lunches. Unfortunately, we can't assemble sandwiches for you, but we can introduce you to the new lunch bags from Fluf. With organic cotton outside, a toxin-free removable vinyl liner inside, and adorable illustrations (even a few by artist Matthew Langille), we think they're pretty great. Right up there with sliced bread.
After last week's recall, many moms aren't sure which children's medications are safe.

But if your little one has a cough, you can rely on the all-natural soothing benefits of ZarBee's, a honey-based cough syrup that's also loaded with vitamins and antioxidants to help them get better fast.

And to make things even easier on you, Zarbee's is running a recall exchange program: The Cough Syrup Bottle Swap. Just upload a photo or video of yourself with your recalled bottle, and they will e-mail you a code for a free bottle or Zarbee's. Sweet.
