Gap Inc. announced a recall of baby swimsuits in the U.S. and Canada because a design flaw can potentially cause a child to strangle, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada said.

The CPSC said the swimsuits' straps are too short, causing a plastic ring at the neck of the suit to press against the child's throat.

About 7,000 of the suits sold in the U.S. and Canada are subject to the recall. Gap told the CPSC that two customers complained about the problem, but no injuries have been reported.
Pampers' much-hyped diaper redesign called Dry Max has parents from coast to coast furious as complaints continue to roll in about the diapers causing what is described as a chemical burn or severe rash on the bottoms of infants and toddlers.

By the third diaper change after buying the new Pampers, Joanna Ravlin Dye said her 2-year-old was suffering.

"I found my daughter had a horrible, red, raised diaper rash and was obviously in pain and distress," the Minnesota mother told Consumer Ally. "The rash went on to be oozing, bleeding open sores."

So, like other parents who were at loss for what might have caused the problem, she found post after post describing the same situation with the diaper as the suspected culprit. Many describe the same futile exercise of treating the redness as a diaper rash and finding that none of the typical remedies work. And then, within a day of switching from the new Pampers, parent after parent claims, the problem goes away.
Continue reading Pampers Dry Max Causing Rashes and Burns, Parents Allege

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Kids in Danger: Dangerous Nursery Products Top 2009 Recall List

Filed under: Health & Safety: Babies, Alerts & Recalls

Recalls of strollers, cribs, high chairs and other nursery products pushed the nursery product category to the top category of recalled products for the first time, the advocacy group Kids in Danger announced.

In a just-released report analyzing recalls conducted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the group found that 40 nursery product recalls involved more than 21 million units tied to 198 injuries and nine deaths.

"And those incidents include only those already reported at the time of the recall," Kids in Danger executive director Nancy Cowles said in a statement emailed to WalletPop.com.
On the heels of a warning by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission about the potentially lethal risks of using baby slings, Infantino is recalling more than 1 million Wendy Bellissimo and SlingRider models linked to the deaths of at least three babies.

All three babies died last year, the CPSC said: A 7-week-old in Philadelphia; a 6-day-old in Salem, Ore.; and a 3-month-old in Cincinnati.

The CPSC said 1 million are being recalled in the U.S. and about 15,000 in Canada. The slings have been deemed unsafe for any infant under 4 months old due to the risk of suffocation and should not be used. Infantino will replace them with another product.

"The CPSC felt it was important two weeks ago to warn all parents about the danger with certain infant slings and show ways to use them safely," says CPSC spokesman Scott Wolfson. "Today we have identified one sling in particular that poses a risk of suffocation to babies."
The lure of a cute little puppy. It is a weakness that many animal lovers have succumbed to. And now it's being used as bait for a variation of the time-tested advance-payment scam.

Animal lovers beware: the Oregon Attorney General's office is warning about this scam after it surfaced in that state. The ASPCA has a page dedicated to educating people about avoiding this kind of scam.

Here's how it works. The scammer places an ad for a puppy (or a purebred dog) that needs a home. The ad says the dog is free to whomever can give it a good home. Then comes the catch. Once the contact is made, the person who supposedly has the dog requests that money be wired to cover the transportation costs of safely getting the puppy to its new home.
Graco Children's Products is recalling its popular Graco Harmony High Chairs after receiving nearly 500 reports of them tipping over. At least two dozen injuries to children have been reported, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

About 1.2 million of the high chairs were sold nationwide since November 2003 for $70-$120. The company has stopped making them. Every Harmony High Chair that has been made is subject to the recall.

The high chairs should not be used until they are repaired.
"Made in China."

It's the calling card of a staggering percentage of products that Americans buy. And what does that phrase conjure for you? Poorly made? Dangerous? Ask America's top product safety official about Chinese-made products and you're going to get a different answer. She said change is already here -- asserting there's a new awareness among Chinese government officials and manufacturers that has led to a noticeable difference in imports from that country meeting U.S. standards.

Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairwoman Inez Tenenbaum said recent law changes in the U.S. and a constant dialogue with the Chinese government is yielding results that should end up with American consumers feeling better about Chinese products.

"They have gotten the message," Tenenbaum said. "And it's very important to the Chinese that the brand 'Made in China' have a positive meaning to Americans, since we are probably the largest consuming nation of Chinese products ... Our economies are tied, but we do not jeopardize safety for trade issues."

She said the Chinese have closed some factories that violated U.S. safety laws.

The baby sling, an accessory that engenders strong feelings from parents and safety advocates on opposite sides, is being targeted by the U.S. Consumer Product Commission with a warning that the carriers can be dangerous to infants.

"We know of too many deaths in these slings and we now know the hazard scenarios for very small babies, so the time has come to alert parents and caregivers," CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum said in an address to the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association. "We want to empower them to make a decision that is best for the safety of their baby, while realizing that slings play a role in the bonding of baby and mother in many cultures."
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is moving toward forbidding companies that sell, make or import children's clothing from offering outerwear with drawstrings, following a sweep by the agency that found numerous violations of 14-year-old guidelines, our sister site, WalletPop, has learned.

A recent spate of drawstring recalls prompted the safety agency to acknowledge the crackdown, which could result in negotiated financial penalties to the companies. The CPSC started taking a harder line on drawstrings with a 2006 letter to those who deal with children's clothing, warning that any garment violating the guidelines would be considered defective.

Still, drawstrings are routinely found by the CPSC on many children's clothing items -- particularly hooded sweatshirts. More than two dozen strangulation deaths have been reported to the CPSC, including a 3-year-old in California in 2009.

"It is completely inexcusable for any manufacturer and any retailer to violate the longstanding guidelines on children's clothing with drawstrings," CPSC spokesman Scott Wolfson tells WalletPop. "The guidelines were set ... they can save a child's life. It is one of the simplest guidelines the CPSC has put out in its history. There have been far too many deaths and near-strangulations from products that violate those guidelines."
They were real lemons. As in duds.

The maker of the Girl Scout cookie line, Kellogg's Little Brownie Bakers, issued a statement saying some customers had complained of "an off taste and smell." So, the bakers tested them and found them to be safe to eat, just not so good to eat -- "not up to our quality standards," company spokeswoman Susanne Norwitz told WalletPop in an e-mail.

She said that 31 of the 81 Girl Scout councils nationwide have been contacted and were told they could return Lemon Chalets in their control if they were among the batches that didn't go over so well.

But don't call this a recall, the company said. "We are handling this matter as a quality withdrawal."

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced four separate recalls involving sweatshirts for children.

You would think 14 years after the clothing industry was told to stop putting drawstrings in hoods the practice would have stopped.

Drawstrings have been implicated in strangulation deaths of children and were essentially banned in 1996 when the CPSC issued guidelines for clothing manufacturers and importers. All three of the recalled lines were manufactured in China; one included some made in Pakistan.

Three of the recalled lines were sold at Burlington Coat Factory stores.
