Italian baby names can bring centuries of tradition and history into your child's life, and also usually carry an air of the exotic and mysterious, especially if you're working on the perfect name for your new baby girl. We've assembled a highly unscientific rundown of the five most popular Italian baby girl names, their translations, and meanings.

Of course, if you really are Italian, or want to follow the traditions of their great culture for your own reasons, your daughter's name has already been chosen. For generations, many Italian families have named the firstborn female after the paternal grandmother, the second after the maternal grandmother, and subsequent daughters after a favorite aunt or saint.

If you decide to go with an Italian baby girl name, keep in mind that Italians celebrate both the child's actual birthday and her name-day, or "onomastico." Since a large majority of Italian baby names are descended from the name of a saint, there is typically a day on the calendar earmarked to celebrate that saint, and by extension, anyone carrying that name. Italian baby girls can even look forward to getting presents on their name-day!

So what are the five most popular Italian baby girl names?

Adriana: A form of the Latin name "Adrienne," Adriana means "dark" or "rich." The name also refers to a province in Northern Italy, home of the beautiful Church of Santa Maria Assunta della Tomba. Currently celebrities sharing this name include model Adriana Lima, and in the fictional realm, Drea de Matteo's lovely but doomed "Sopranos" character Adriana La Cerva.

Angela: This is a very popular name across the world, especially when you count its many variations (Angelica, Angeline, and about 40 others.) In its original form, Angela derives from Greek origins, and means "messenger" or "messenger of God". Of course she'll be your angel from heaven, and she'll share good company with a wide range of stars of screen including Angelina Jolie, Angie Harmon and Angie Dickinson.

Rosa: We'll give you one guess what beautiful flower this Latin-derived Italian baby girl name descends from. Yes, it's the rose! As with Angela, there are many variations of this Italian baby girl name available, Rose being the English version, and Charo, Rosabel, Rosalie and many others preferred in different cultures.

Anna: The second most popular Italian baby girl name is a Latin variation of "Hannah." The name originated from the bible in the form of a devout woman who saw the infant Jesus presented at the temple in Jerusalem. If names are any indication of future success, your daughter could be a famous ballerina (Anna Pavlova) or tennis player (the lovely and talented Anna Kournikova.) As with most of these Italian baby names, there are tons of variations: Ann, Annamarie, Annika and many others.

Maria: The most popular Italian baby girl name is another Latin name, this one meaning "star of the sea." This popular name has taken many forms across the world; with Mary proving the most popular English form and Marie ruling French culture. The ballad "Maria" from the popular musical "West Side Story" gave this name a huge boost a few generations back, and it continues to reveal new popular variations, such as pop singer Mariah Carey.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

July 4th Crafts for Kids: Tie-Dye T-Shirts and Pinwheels

Filed under: Holidays, Fashion, Activities: Big Kids

Make Independence Day festivities even more of a blast with DIY patriotic paper pinwheels and tie-dye T-shirts.

Summer celebrations call for outdoor activities and star-spangled gear. Psychedelic tie-dye T-shirts are easy to make, and they're impossible to mess up. Kids will take pride in their work, no matter how they come out, and then they get to model their finished fashions for your July 4th celebration.

While they're at it, why not embellish the table as well as the tots? Twirling stars-and-stripes pinwheels add sizzle as a centerpiece when stuck in a bucket of sand. They also make a great garden decoration.

Here's how to make both projects:

Tie-Dye T-Shirts

What You'll Need:
o. White cotton T-shirts, tanks or other tops
o. Large plastic trash bag
o. Rubber gloves
o. Rubber bands
o. Bucket of water
o. Paper towels
o. Fabric dye, red and blue in applicator bottles (check out Tulip's single bottle applicators)
o. Measuring cup filled with water
o. Large plastic bags or plastic wrap

What to Do:
1. Prepare working surface by laying the garbage bag on a flat surface. Assemble all the needed materials.

2. Wet shirts in bucket of water, then ring out so the shirts are still damp, but not dripping.

3. For spiral design: Pinch shirt at center and turn as you keep pinching. Fabric will wrap around itself to look like a small disk. Adults can help to gather ends and secure with rubber bands. Place a band around the outer part of the disk to hold it in place. Then place two or three bands around it to look like a pie.

For stripes design: Vertically fold the shirt, accordion-style with about 1-inch folds. Then roll the folded shirt from bottom to top. Secure with bands around outside edge, then two more bands around the roll like a pie.

For heart design: Fold shirt in half vertically with the front face out. Use a light pen to draw half a heart shape along edge. Gather the fabric with fingers along the drawn line. Place a rubber band on the line and double over several times to be tight. Add additional bands like rings along the rest of the shirt. Now you are ready for dying.

4. Put on gloves. An adult should open applicator bottles and pour water a little at a time to fill. Shake well. Tip: Be careful, the dye bubbles up like soda as it reacts.

5. Squirt colors in desired areas. Squirt into the folds and gathers and also along the banded lines. Make sure not to overlap colors too much, or result will be muddy. Saturate the dye, leaving some white space, but don't saturate to the point of dripping.

6. Place dyed shirt into a plastic bag, or roll in plastic wrap and let sit for six to eight hours.

7. Put gloves on again, and remove shirt from plastic. Cut off or remove the rubber bands. Rinse shirt in bucket of water and hang dry.

8. Note: Shirts should be laundered separately in cold water for the first couple of washes.

Patriotic Paper Pin-Wheels

What You'll Need:
o. Small 1/4-inch dowel, cut to about 12 to 16 inches in length OR heavy cardboard, cut to same length by 3/4 inch wide
o. Thin nail with a flat head, about 1 1/2 inches long
o. Hammer
o. Block of wood for protecting surface
o. Small beads
o. Pencil
o. Scissors
o. Ruler
o. Double-sided scrapbooking paper in red, white and blue patterns

What to Do:
1. Measure and mark a 7-inch square on paper. Cut out square.

2. Use ruler to draw diagonal lines from corner to corner to form an "X" on paper. Measure and mark a point 3/4-inch from center of "X" along each line.

3. Cut along diagonal line stopping at marked point.

4. Fold one corner into center and hold with finger. Repeat for each of the four corners. Secure by poking the nail with one bead threaded on it, through all layers at the center point. Use the wood underneath to protect the surface. Twirl nail to widen hole.

5. Thread two more beads onto the nail behind the pinwheel.

6. With adult supervision, gently hammer nail into the dowel, about 1/2-inch from end. Leave some room between washers and dowel to spin freely.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Baby Gear Brands That Give Back

Filed under: Baby Essentials, Fashion, Gear Guides: Babies

Just when new parents start getting the hang of having an infant, baby teething starts, sometimes throwing life with baby into a tailspin. Teething symptoms generally start between 3 and 12 months, and, while it will be about two years before all of a child's baby teeth come in, the discomfort of baby teething usually goes away when the tooth breaks the skin. Of course, with 20 baby teeth to grow in, pain from different baby teeth coming in can last several months. Baby teething is inevitable, and will likely mean a fussy child. Here are some tried-and-true methods of easing the pain:

Apply cold to the gums: An icy cold temperature is soothing on gums sore from baby teething. A moist frozen washcloth or even a popsicle (you can make them out of plain water if preferred) will work, but can be messy; the best bet is a freezable teether, such as the Munchkin Fun Ice Soothing Ring Teether ($3.99 from diapers.com). This teether is specially made for freezing, and stays soft, even when ice-cold. If you'd prefer a cold teether filled with purified water rather than non-toxic gel, the Natursutten Chill-it Teether ($11.99 from diapers.com) is water-filled to be chilled in the refrigerator.

Ask about topical teething gels: While mothers of older generations may insist that nothing is better for baby teething than a little whiskey on the gums, even a tiny amount of alcohol is not recommended for babies by experts. For temporary pain relief from baby teething, an over-the-counter topical oral anesthetic gives more of a numbing effect than alcohol, anyway. Consult your child's pediatrician first, and only use gels designed specifically for infants.

Massage the gums: No teething gel, or just want to take a break from using it when teething symptoms pop up? Wash your hands thoroughly and massage baby's gums gently with your finger. Do this while holding and rocking the baby to calm her further -- the "cuddle hormone" released when the baby has skin-to-skin contact with a parent is believed to physically minimize pain, at least to some extent.

Pain relief drops: Your child's pediatrician may recommend administering baby acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) or ibuprofen (such as Motrin), especially if he has the baby teething symptom of a fever. These types of pain relievers can ease baby teething pain for a couple of hours. Never give a baby or child aspirin, however, and always check that any pain reliever, which comes in a dropper for infants, is specific to your child's age.

Baby teething symptoms usually don't require a visit to the pediatrician; as your baby gets closer to or begins teething, discuss recommended treatments during regular checkups. Call the doctor if teething symptoms are severe or last for several days, if baby teeth don't appear by 12 months or if you have other concerns.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Baby Bags for Chic Mamas

What to buy for the mom to be who has everything? Splurge on a high-end baby bag that she wouldn't buy for herself -- make it a group gift with a few mutual friends. Designer baby bags generally range from $150 to $500 or more, but the new parent will get more than just a fancy label and chic style: high end bags are also very well made, and can hold up to years of toting diapers and snacks. Beware of low-quality imitation designer bags, especially when shopping on the internet. If the price on that high-end designer diaper bag seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Coach Baby Bags
Coach, known for their luxurious bags, has super-stylish baby bags for a range of tastes, and none have a slouchy diaper bag look. Choose from traditional tan or black bags, or go for a more baby-centric pink pastel or denim blue. All coach baby bags come with a changing pad. Prices for these designer baby bags range from about $360 to $500.

Petunia Picklebottom
Specializing in chic baby bags, the Petunia Picklebottom line of designer diaper bags are highly functional as well as fashion-forward. The Touring Tote is both a shoulder bag and a stroller bag that can be carried long after baby is out of diapers. These stylish baby bags have features such as a removable changing pad and a monogrammed wipes case. Bags are made of easy-to-clean PVC and come in an array of colorful patterns like Morning in Monaco, Dancing in Dublin and Frolicking in Fez. $146.

Skip Hop
Another company geared entirely towards parents, Skip Hop offers several lines of baby bags, from masculine styles to stylish baby bags like the City Chic. This roomy shoulder/stroller bag has all of the features you would expect, plus a removable matching clutch for holding mom's smaller "purse" items. Cotton fabric is laminated for easy cleaning. $99.

Bugaboo
Bugaboo's line of stylish baby bags are designed to adapt as your child grows. The Bugaboo Red is a leather self-standing designer diaper bag with removable insulated storage compartments, lots of pockets and a changing pad. And 1% of sales goes to The Global Fund, to help eliminate AIDS in Africa. $230.

Kate Spade Baby Bag
The Kate Spade New York Splodge Dot Randi Baby Bag has a black-and-cream dot pattern outside, bright red on the inside, and enough space to hold all of your baby necessities. This high end designer diaper bag has a matching changing pad and both a small handle and a longer strap for shoulder or cross-body wear. Funky and functional, this stylish baby bag retails for $425.
The focal point for your table, baby shower centerpieces can range from floral bouquets to balloons to edible works of art -- but what about making a creative centerpiece that the mom-to-be can use? Out of all the decorations for your baby shower, centerpieces using the necessities of baby care and other important nursery items will impress your shower guests as well as give the honored mom-to-be a treasured and appreciated gift.

One of the most popular baby shower centerpiece ideas, a diaper cake can be original, creative, and, most importantly, useful and helpful for the mother-to-be. Items used to make this baby shower centerpiece, such as diapers, baby bottles, pacifiers, washcloths, and many more baby care items, will all be used by the new mom once her baby arrives. Plan the Perfect Baby Shower has step-by-step instructions for making the perfect diaper cake centerpiece as well as pictures and ideas to adapt a diaper cake to any baby shower theme. For example, if your shower theme involves teddy bears, you can decorate the diaper cake with a stuffed teddy bear on top of the cake.

A towel cake, another creative centerpiece idea using baby gear, is easier and faster to make than a diaper cake. Using regular sized towels, hand towels, and washcloths, build the cake in layers and top with rubber duckies, baby shampoos, or any other baby bath item. Creative Baby Shower Ideas provides how-to instructions along with pictures of these delightful centerpieces that can be decorated to coordinate with any shower theme.

For fans of flower arrangements who still want to create a baby shower centerpiece using baby gear, how about a baby sock rose bouquet? Another idea from Plan the Perfect Baby Shower, this rose bouquet is simple to make, although making each individual sock rose can be time consuming until you get the hang of it. You'll need green floral tape and wire, six pairs of baby socks (in your preferred color) to make a dozen roses, wire cutters, a vase, and additional greenery like baby's breath. Detailed instructions, along with photos, are available on the website to help you make an adorable and useful baby shower centerpiece.

If you're not a crafty type, there are many simple and straight-forward baby shower centerpiece ideas that involve absolutely no artistic talent on your part. Take a stuffed animal -- it can be Elmo, Winnie the Pooh, Cookie Monster, a teddy bear, or whatever animal you choose. Dress the animal in a diaper and a onesie, give him a pacifier and a bottle, wrap him in a blanket, and place in a basket for a creative centerpiece. For unique and functional baby shower centerpieces, find a miniature red wagon or a dump truck and fill with diapers, bibs, onesies, socks, washcloths, booties, rattles, blankets, bottles, and any other baby care items you wish. Not only will the mom-to-be have a good supply of needed supplies, but she'll also have a great toy her baby will love playing with when he gets a little older.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Pregnancy Announcements: Surprise the Grandparents

Pregnancy announcements are a fun way to share the news with friends and family -- particularly grandparents. While a phone call will suffice, consider these creative ways to let the new grandparents know you're expecting.

As you plan to make your big pregnancy announcement, you may wonder about timing. When is the best time to let your loved ones know that you have a little one on the way?

According to the website Love to Know, "some couples choose to tell everyone right away. This is often the case for couples who have announced they had been trying to conceive. Others feel they would want the support from immediate family and close friends should a problem arise. Of course, some simply want to share the momentous occasion immediately so everyone can join in their happiness."

The site says eight to 12 weeks is the typical time for parents to spill the beans.

"They feel more comfortable telling their news after this time because risk of miscarriage is lower," Love to Know reports. "For some couples, it is an intimate secret they want to keep to themselves for a short period of time. And for others, a 'surprise' pregnancy may take a little getting used to before telling the rest of the world."

Whatever your timetable, perhaps the easiest way to announce your pregnancy and the impeding arrival of your new addition is through written correspondence, which is especially ideal for friends and family who are out of town.

The upside to taking this approach is that each person will be surprised as they receive your card in the mail. The downside is that you likely won't be there to share the excitement with them. If you like the idea of sending pregnancy announcement cards, consider the options available through Tiny Prints. These cards are easily customizable and affordable.

If you aren't planning to do a mass announcement, but would like to send a cute card to a select few, consider Tummy Talk's "Coming Soon" pregnancy announcements, which come in a set of 10. Also available are individual greeting cards from Zazzle. Written as a message from the baby, these creative pregnancy announcements express excitement about meeting his or her new family and includes space for the due date.

New grandmas and grandpas will be especially excited to receive your news and you may want to create an extra-special surprise pregnancy announcement for them. Rather than sticking to cards alone, consider small gifts created just for them.

Make your own card, using a pregnancy poem that creatively announces your news. One popular example is a letter from the baby. You can couple one of these poems with a small gift, such as a frame to hold the ultrasound picture or a special T-shirt for Grandma or Grandpa. The T-shirts are particularly fun for first time grandparents.

Other nice options include a special handkerchiefs set for the grandparents to be coupled with a poem about the parent-to-be following in their footsteps and Countdown to Grandbaby plaque. For other creative ideas, review Modern Mom's Pregnancy Announcement Ideas.

However you decide announce your pregnancy to the new grandparents, they are sure to be surprised and full of joy!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Room for Baby: Planning the Nursery

Filed under: Baby Essentials, Decor, Gear Guides: Pregnancy

One of the most exciting parts of getting ready for your new baby is the nursery planning. As your life changes, so does your home, as you establish a room for baby. The nursery should have a few basics: a crib or bassinet, a changing table, a rocking chair and a dresser to hold the baby's clothing and blankets. The decor is a matter of taste -- some parents pick a whimsical theme, some decorate according to the baby's gender and some decorate according to their own personal style. Unless you truly enjoy redecorating every few years, it's a good idea to opt for baby room ideas that can grow with your child, but as these design sites show, the sky is the limit when it comes to nursery decor.

Spearmint Baby has lots of clever baby room ideas, including popular Gender Neutral Nurseries for parents who don't go for a lot of pink frills or powder blues. Bold colors accent a neutral backdrop, with reds, yellows and greens in the chair, art, bookcase and stuffed toys. A gray room for baby may sound cold, but with bright orange curtains and blue and green accessories, it's modern and cozy.

Project Nursery has a huge project gallery of baby room ideas. We love the fall colors and feel of the October Baby Nursery, with its chocolate brown furniture and orange and beige walls. The mobile over the crib suggests falling leaves and birds flying south for the winter. Brown, orange and white round paper lanterns are a cool design touch that pulls the autumnal theme together with a slight nod to Halloween that will have visual appeal all year long.

ShelterPop rounded up a collection of "Seriously Stylish Nurseries" that turn a simple room for baby into a haven of pop art, nature or cozy fabric. There's even a stylish thrifty baby room idea where hand-me-downs are pulled together with the addition of a couple of fashionably cool pieces -- great for nursery planning on a budget.

MomFinds.com has baby room ideas for cute themes that break away from duckies and Winnie the Pooh, including a roundup of adorable accessories and decor for an elephant-themed room for baby. The elephant rocker is a unique toy that baby will enjoy as he gets older, and makes a fun piece of decor during infancy.

Coochicoos, "a design blog for modern parents," offers baby room ideas that are chic and unusual, often utilizing bright color (or white with splashes of bright color), modern art, whimsical furniture pieces and offbeat nursery accessories such as chandeliers, hat racks and surf boards.

Little Crown Interiors is a good resource for luxurious, more traditional baby room ideas, such as the Elegant Boy and Glamorous Pink nurseries, as well as gender neutral designs such as the Unique Yellow nursery. Use the site as a nursery planning guide, or utilize their nationwide e-design services.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Unique Baby Shower Gift Ideas

Searching for a unique baby shower gift? Think beyond pink and blue. Rather than opting for traditional baby gifts, consider giving these five quirky gifts that the parents (and baby) will cherish for years.

Stock Shares
Your little one doesn't have to be the next Warren Buffet to appreciate the unique baby shower gift of a well-valued stock. With companies like Give a Share, you can make the new baby a shareholder at birth by buying just one share of stock from popular companies like Disney (about $72). The little guy or gal will be entitled to declared dividends, annual reports, and any other shareholder perks from any of the 100 stocks available to choose from. Now that's saving for their future!

Happily Handmade
If money is tight, but time and talent are not, consider creating a gift to last a lifetime. A knitting shower is a great way to gather family and friends together to create small squares to be knitted into a large blanket. Many local craft stores will hold a class for next to nothing, and it's more than enough instruction to get you started on your single square. Just be sure to get everyone's contributions together for a final assembly before the big day! For more inspiration on this unique baby shower gift idea, see Homemade Mothering's story.

Belly Art
Will you recall how big you really were while pregnant? With the creative genius behind Art Bellies Pregnancy Art Prints, you can remember forever just how bulky you became. The simple-to-use kits allow Moms to create a silhouette of their beautiful bellies with amazing and bold-color results. These precious prints are so professional-looking, they can be hung in a nursery, office, or anywhere "fine" art will be appreciated. The kits include paper, Japanese calligraphy ink, natural brushes, dyes, and all the instructions you need to create at least three different types of pregnancy portraits. If you're looking for a really different baby shower gift, you've found it.

Practical Gadgets
When asked what one item got them through their first months of new motherhood, many moms may answer "my iPod!" Since electronics aren't usually seen as part of the romantic charm that baby shower gifts seem to impart, however, it's easy to blow them off as a non-essential. Behind every great mom is a digital camera, portable DVD player for the car, or color printer that helps them get things done. Why not ask if a gizmo is on their baby wish list? A snazzy new iPod would surely be a unique baby shower gift.

Domain Names
Depending on how unique your baby's name is, you can find a domain name to match for well under $15 a year from sites like GoDaddy.com. Wouldn't you love to present the new baby with his or her very own web address? In addition to having an online home to showcase baby photos, a blog, or updates on the new family, it can be used when baby gets older for them to create their own business. It's a perfect placeholder for success, and we're pretty sure no one else at the baby shower has thought of this unique baby shower gift idea.

These are just a few unique baby shower gifts you can get for most any new baby. With a little planning and some insight into what Mom wants, your gift will be the envy of the event!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Bassinet vs. Crib: Where to Put the Baby

Filed under: Baby Essentials, Gear Guides: Babies, Sleep

So, you're planning for a new baby. You know you'll need a crib for at least a couple of years, until it's time for a "big kid" bed -- but what about when the baby is brand new? Over the years, the baby bassinet or cradle has come to be considered less of a nursery necessity; because it only gets use for a few weeks, many parents choose to go straight to a full-sized crib. That's fine, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, as long as you place the baby to sleep on her back wearing a sleeper, with no heavy blankets, pillows or crib bumpers. Still, there are reasons why using a bassinet might be a good choice for you.

A bassinet's small size allows it to be easily placed next to a bed. Unless you have a huge bedroom, chances are adding a full-sized crib by the bed is out of the question. It's recommended that newborns sleep in the same room as their parents for the first few weeks -- about the same amount of time a bassinet or baby cradle is useful as a baby bed -- especially if the mother is nursing. This allows for the baby to be checked on frequently during the night, and just having the baby in the same room early on can help give parents peace of mind.

It's easier to place a newborn into a bassinet. The high sides of a crib mean you may have to lean over them if the sides don't come down. You can place the baby in the bassinet from a sitting position on a chair or bed, if necessary, which is a benefit while the mother is recovering from the delivery, especially if she had a C-section.

There is little room for the baby to move around. Although, truthfully, a swaddled newborn isn't going to be any more mobile in a crib than a baby bassinet, psychologically you may prefer the small size of a bassinet or baby cradle.

Bassinets can be portable, unlike most cribs, allowing you to move the baby's bed to any part of the house for nap time. Portable bassinets are also convenient for visiting friends and family those first few weeks. To get the most out of your baby bassinet, look for a model such as a Badger Basket Portable Bassinet 'n Cradle, which converts to a toy box after the baby outgrows it.

You may have inherited an heirloom cradle or bassinet, or found an antique baby cradle you've fallen in love with. In most cases, the beautiful old cradle is safe to use. Be sure the mattress pad fits snugly; in addition, an old-fashioned wooden cradle shouldn't have hazards such as protruding hardware or legs that might give out, and check to make sure that any paint is not lead-based. If you do use an older bassinet, make sure it meets the current safety guidelines.
If you decide against purchasing a bassinet for your baby, don't feel guilty. Bassinets are not recommended by most pediatric experts in lieu of cribs -- it's the parents' choice. What is really important is that you don't put hazards like pillows and blankets in with the baby, that you make sure that the bassinet or crib you use is not under recall and/or meets safety requirements and that you keep an eye on your baby as much as you can while she sleeps.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Jillian Michaels Hoping to Adopt Baby From the Congo

Filed under: Adoption, In The News, Celeb News & Interviews

She's helped a slew of obese contestants on TV's "The Biggest Loser" shed pounds, but now trainer Jillian Michaels is ready to take on a whole new challenge: toilet training.

Michaels, 37, tells Us Weekly she is planning to adopt a baby from the Congo.

"My dossier, which is your paperwork portfolio, is in to the Democratic Republic of the Congo," she tells the magazine. "So the paperwork is done, and now it's just a waiting game. It could be six months, 12 months; it could be two years. Or, it could be tomorrow! They call you and they say, 'Oh, we have your referral,' which is essentially the child they match you up with, and you go overseas and you get him or her."

The star fitness guru told Women's Health last spring that she wanted to adopt.

"I can't handle doing that to my body," she said of being pregnant. "Also, when you rescue something, it's like rescuing a part of yourself."

Michaels is leaving "The Biggest Loser" this year, but Us reports she'll be part of the panel on "The Doctors."
NO PURCHASE REQUIRED TO ENTER OR WIN

1. ELIGIBILITY: AOL Living Giveaways (the "Giveaways") are open only to individuals who are legal residents of the fifty (50) United States (including the District of Columbia) who are 18 years of age or older. Employees of AOL Inc., its advertising or promotion agencies, those involved in the production, development, implementation or handling of Giveaways, any agents acting for, or on behalf of the above entities, their respective parent companies, officers, directors, subsidiaries, affiliates, licensees, service providers, prize suppliers any other person or entity associated with the Giveaways (collectively "Giveaway Entities") and/or the immediate family (spouse, parents, siblings and children) and household members (whether related or not) of each such employee, are not eligible. All U.S., federal, state and local laws and regulations apply. Void in Puerto Rico and where prohibited by law.

2. SPONSOR: The Giveaways are sponsored by AOL Inc., 770 Broadway, New York, NY 10003 ("Sponsor").

3. AGREEMENT TO OFFICIAL RULES: Participation in the Giveaway constitutes entrant's full and unconditional agreement to and acceptance of these Official Rules and the decisions of the Sponsor, which are final and binding. Winning a prize is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements set forth herein.

4. ENTRY PERIOD: The start and end dates/times of each Giveaway (the "Entry Period") will be posted on the applicable Giveaway site.

5. ENTRY: To enter a Giveaway, follow the instructions on the Giveaway site. Submission will result in one (1) entry. The number of times you can enter the Giveaway will be posted on the applicable Giveaway site. The use of any agencies or automated software to submit entries will void all entries submitted by that person.

6. DRAWING: At the conclusion of the Entry Period, Sponsor will select the name(s) of the potential winner(s) in a random drawing of all eligible entries received during the Entry Period. The number of winners to be selected in a specific Giveaway will be posted on the applicable Giveaway site. The odds of being selected as a potential winner depend on the number of eligible entries received during the Entry Period. Potential winners will be contacted via email and will be asked to provide their full name, age and mailing address within a specified time period. If a potential winner does not respond within the timeframe stated in the notification email, the Sponsor may select an alternate potential winner in his/her place at random from all entries received during the Entry Period. Limit one (1) prize per household per Giveaway.

7. REQUIREMENTS OF THE POTENTIAL WINNERS: Except where prohibited, the potential winners may be required to complete and return an affidavit of eligibility and liability/publicity release (the "Affidavit/Release") within seven (7) days of being notified. If a potential winner fails to sign and return the Affidavit/Release within the required time period, an alternate entrant will be selected in his/her place in a random drawing of all entries received.

8. PRIZE(S): The prize(s) (including each prize's approximate retail value) available to be won in a specific Giveaway will be posted on the Giveaway site. No cash or other substitution may be made, except by the Sponsor, who reserves the right to substitute a prize with another prize of equal or greater value if the prize is not available for any reason as determined by the Sponsor in its sole discretion. The winners are responsible for any taxes and fees associated with receipt or use of a prize.

9. GENERAL CONDITIONS: In the event that the operation, security, or administration of the Giveaway is impaired in any way for any reason, including, but not limited to fraud, virus, or other technical problem, the Sponsor may, in its sole discretion, either: (a) suspend the Giveaway to address the impairment and then resume the Giveaway in a manner that best conforms to the spirit of these Official Rules; or (b) award the prizes at random from among the eligible entries received up to the time of the impairment. The Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any individual it finds to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Giveaway or to be acting in violation of these Official Rules or in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner. Any attempt by any person to undermine the legitimate operation of the Giveaway may be a violation of criminal and civil law, and, should such an attempt be made, the Sponsor reserves the right to seek damages from any such person to the fullest extent permitted by law. The Sponsor's failure to enforce any term of these Official Rules shall not constitute a waiver of that provision. In case of a dispute as to the owner of an entry, entry will be deemed to have been submitted by the authorized account holder of the screen name from which the entry is made. The authorized account holder is defined as the natural person who is assigned to an e-mail address by an Internet access provider, online service provider, or other organization responsible for assigning e-mail addresses for the domain associated with the submitted e-mail address.

10. RELEASE ANDLIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY: By participating in the Giveaway, entrants agree to release and hold harmless the Giveaway Entities from and against any claim or cause of action arising out of participation in the Giveaway or receipt or use of any prize, including, but not limited to: (a) unauthorized human intervention in the Giveaway; (b) technical errors related to computers, servers, providers, or telephone or network lines; (c) printing errors; (d) lost, late, postage-due, misdirected, or undeliverable mail; (e) errors in the administration of the Giveaway or the processing of entries; or (f) injury or damage to persons or property which may be caused, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, from entrant's participation in the Giveaway or receipt of any prize. Entrant further agrees that in any cause of action, the Giveaway Entities' liability will be limited to the cost of entering and participating in the Giveaway, and in no event shall the Giveaway Entities be liable for attorney's fees. Entrant waives the right to claim any damages whatsoever, including, but not limited to, punitive, consequential, direct, or indirect damages.

11. DISPUTES: Except where prohibited, entrant agrees that any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of, or connected with, the Giveaway or any prize awarded shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, and exclusively by the appropriate court located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules, entrant's rights and obligations, or the rights and obligations of the Sponsors in connection with the Giveaway, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules (whether of the Commonwealth of Virginia or any other jurisdiction), which would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than the Commonwealth of Virginia.

12. GIVEAWAY RESULTS: To request the name of the winners, send a self-addressed stamped envelope (stating the specific Giveaway you are requesting the winners for) to ParentDish Winner's List, c/o AOL, 770 Broadway, Rm 6A:D16, New York, NY 10003. Requests must be received within fifteen (15) days from the end date of the applicable Giveaway.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Playdates: 5 Kinds to Avoid

Filed under: Preschoolers, Big Kids, Funny Stuff

Let's face it. The life of a modern mom would not be complete without the playdate.

While at work, we get a voicemail from Playdate Penny who would love to pencil our child in for an afternoon of organized extracurricular activities and we "accidentally" forget to call her back for days. Then there are the times when the babysitter calls in sick and we're desperate to find the Post-It where we jotted down Playdate Penny's phone number.

For some moms, scheduling playdates has become a full-time job. They have it down to a science, organizing and planning everything from the kids to the carpool to the heart-shaped sandwiches they'll serve as snack. We applaud these women. They do an amazing job and are the queens of playdates. Now, for working mothers, it's a different story. We already have full-time jobs and are stretched so thin that we usually don't have the time, energy or sanity required to plan the perfect playdate. Let's call those two hour chunks of socialized, structured play what they really are -- all work, no playdates.

But the truth is, as much as we try to avoid them, the playdate is here to stay. For those of you new to the game, here's a simple guide to help you survive the pitfalls of playdating, the ones we loathe and the ones we love.

Because if you can't be with the one you love, playdate with the one you're with.

	Playdates We Loathe

Playdate Desperado: A lonely mother who is new to the neighborhood will stalk you and your child until you agree to come over to play for an afternoon. The truth is, she's the one desperate for a playdate and is using her child as bait. Out of pity or exhaustion, you finally give in and accept the offer, only to find you have nothing in common with this woman. To add insult to injury, the kids get into a major brawl and before you can grab the doorknob to make your getaway, she's already asking you for a second date and you desperately search your library of excuses to think of a believable reason as to why you can never return. Incidentally, contagious skin rashes work like a charm.

Playdate Cliques: On the rare occasion you do drop your child off at school, you see them gathering in the parking lot. Sporting trendy workout clothes, hair tied back in a ponytail, light makeup application, the keys to their Lexus SUV in one manicured hand and their pig-tailed child's hand in the other. Meet the playdate clique or the "witches of preschool" as we like to call them, comprised of women who do everything together, be it coffee, tennis, gym and, of course, playdates. If you happen to take a day off from work and have a run-in with the witches, they'll be sure to pretend not to know who you are and will intentionally box you out of their conversation. While you overhear them chat about their plans to take their little princesses to an afternoon origami workshop, don't feel bad that you're not on the invite list. Smile to yourself because you know that tomorrow, while they're chasing their kids at Chuck E. Cheese, you'll be back at work lunching and laughing with one of your favorite clients -- who just happens to be a working mom just like you.

Peculiar Playdates: Your kids get along great and your child begs, pleads and moans to have a playdate with their newest friend. Only one problem, you find the parents kind of weird. It's like visiting the Addams Family. They were always friendly, but something was always just a little off-center. It's not like they've got "Cousin It" or that creepy hand named "Thing" bunking with them, but the mom is sporting that 1970s long-haired Morticia look, and the place seems to have a spooky Halloween feel to it, and its only March. The peculiar playdaters phone constantly and if you still don't have caller ID, run, don't walk to the nearest Radio Shack to pick one up or you're doomed.

Playdate Piranhas: Jimmy seemed nice enough, but after inspecting the bite marks on your son's left arm, you discover it might be best to keep your child away from Hannibal Lecter-in training. Biters, punchers, sword fighters and swashbucklers can be scary when your child -- a rule abiding, Raffi loving moppet -- enters their world. Suddenly, your peaceful pixie starts picking up those bad habits and the next thing you know, he's biting the dog. Rule of thumb for biters: if they break the skin during a playdate, they can't come back until they break the habit ... if that doesn't happen until middle school, then sorry, but it's been nice knowing you.

Playdate Paranoia: This is the most stressful playdate by far. The mother brings their child to your house with a laundry list of things the kid can't eat, wear, smell, swallow or touch.

Are you kosher? Is this a nut free environment? Are those crayons nontoxic and do you use pesticides on your lawn? Is that coloring book age appropriate? We don't believe in television, and video games are out of the question. What about the beverages? If you don't have 2 percent growth hormone-free organic milk then he'll just have water, not bottled, fluorinated tap water "that's been filtered, of course."

You smile politely and make a note of the checklist. But what you're really thinking is -- are you kidding us, lady? Are you intentionally raising your boy like John Travolta in that plastic bubble movie, or do you really want to allow him to have any interaction with our kid, whose favorite pastime is proudly proclaiming the booger he just picked is especially for you?

	Playdates We Love

Playdate With a Pal: This is by far the best kind of playdate. In this scenario, you are taking your child to see one of his or her closest friends and their mom just happens to be one of your friends, too. Simple, enjoyable and as close to heaven as humanly possible.

This always happens after work. You bring your kids over in their pajamas and they proceed to try on about 40 different costumes. Arguments are kept to a minimum, your wine glass is continually refilled and you get to catch up on the latest neighborhood gossip. Husbands are also invited to these playdates, since they're the designated drivers.

Playdates in a Pinch: You're about to close the biggest deal of a lifetime when suddenly your cell phone starts buzzing in your suit pocket. You fumble for the phone and your megawatt smile instantly fades as your babysitter informs you she has to leave immediately to take her 6-year-old to the doctor.

You know you can't reach your husband because he's working late, too, and your mother-in-law has dinner plans with her colorist.

Who can you call? That's simple: the most reliable and by far the coolest mom in town who doesn't mind picking up your tots, bringing them to her house and serving them a well-balanced dinner. Big shout out to the moms who've been there for us in a pinch. Without you, our cats would be babysitting our kids. (Just joking ... we're not that nuts ... cats can't figure out how to stick a straw into a juice box or work the DVD player).

Palatial Playdates: Let's be honest. These are, hands down, our favorite kind of playdate. Who doesn't want to check out that gorgeous center hall colonial down the street that you've had your eye on since you moved into the neighborhood? Going on a palatial playdate is just like going to a real estate open house, but you don't have to worry about leaving a fake name and address because you know you can't afford to buy anything.

We admit it, sometimes we are the proverbial nosy neighbors or as we like to call ourselves, the "decorating detectives." We'll jump at the chance to check out the home of our new neighbor who just moved into the McMansion down the road. "Of course, Rebecca would love to come by and swim in your gunite swimming pool ... No, we don't have any other plans," as you quickly pick up your cell phone to cancel a playdate with the "Peculiars."

Mentally taking note as you walk into the grand entrance hall, you marvel at the expansive floorplan, admiring everything from the dentil crown molding to the marble mantels to the custom-made mahogany cabinetry.

Unfortunately, our kids can sometimes sabotage our interior investigations before we've even had a chance to check out the master suite. In one memorable mansion, Beth's daughter launched into a screaming fit with her 3-year-old hostess, fighting over toys and pretty much ruining the playdate before Beth even had a chance to finish counting all the bathrooms.

	Role Mommy Reality Check

Be careful what you wish for. While dialing up a playdate may seem like a quick fix for your busy life and your bored kids, proceed with caution. Make sure your child's companion has the pedigree of a UN Peacekeeper. Once the tables are turned, the last thing you want to do is host a devious troublemaker from down the street who manages to find the only markers in your house that aren't washable and decides to graffiti your playroom walls with the memorable phrase: Timmy wuz here.

Keep your kids organized with these tips. Credit: Getty Images

Help get -- and keep! -- your kids organized with these simple tips.

1. Assign a place where books, homework and backpacks go. If you don't designate a place, backpacks and stuff will be dropped all over the house. KA-BOOM -- you've got clutter!

2. Assign a place for jackets, coats, scarves, gloves, boots and shoes to go. Maybe put up hooks on the wall (low enough for the little ones can reach). Maybe a bookcase with assigned shelves for each child. Or maybe laundry baskets. Label the baskets or shelves with each child's name or write "shoes here," "sports gear here."

3. Make it part of the bedtime routine to check if all books, homework, backpacks (maybe even clothes) are in place, ready for the next day.

4. Hang a big calendar where everyone can see all the family activities. Consider color coding the activities. Brynn is green, Noah is red. Include due dates for BIG school projects and reports.

5. Use a color-coding system not only for the calendar, but any place you need to. Paint Brynn's shelf green; find a red basket for Noah. If you have several children, color code their sheets, towels, everything.

6. Hang a big bulletin board by the door. Everything that kids need to be signed, referred to or returned goes on the bulletin board.

OR for each child, hang a basket, envelope or some receptacle to "capture" notes, invitations and newsletters from school and extra activities. Color code them.

OR set up a file system. Assign each child a file. All important notices and announcements from school and outside activities (even party invitations) get filed. Then when you need information, dates, addresses, they will all be in one place. You can even color code the files.

7. If children want to do their homework in an unorthodox or weird style (that means different from how their parents did things) such as working with the TV on or loud music playing, then make a deal. "You can do your homework this way as long as your homework is complete, done well and handed in on time. If you don't keep your end of the deal, then you do homework my way." Your way might be at his desk, in his room, in silence, no distractions or whatever you determine. This gives your child the power to control how homework will be done; he decides.

8. Try to set up a system that every Friday they empty out backpacks. Even if you skip doing it half the time, at least it will keep you from finding a message in May that it's your turn to send cookies for the Halloween party seven months ago.

9. Set up some house rules to help develop non-procrastinating habits. Examples:

	o. No after-school snack (or computer games, phone calls, TV, or whatever their routine is) until jackets, books and backpacks are put where they belong.
o. No TV, games or time with friends at homework time till everything is complete, done well and ready to be turned in.
o. No going out or time with friends till chores are complete.
o. If there is chaos getting ready in the morning, then they need to get up earlier, which means they have to go to bed earlier.

This system means that THEY have control over when they can play or relax. No arguments: If they want to go out, you ask if homework is done. If not, they know the answer. They will "test" at first to see if rules are real. After a while, children will accept new rules in the house.

10. Ask your child to tell you what are her main causes of frustration at school. Then do some creative problem-solving together. Forget to do homework? Buy a special little notebook to write down homework assignments. Can't stay focused on homework? Break homework time into several shorter sessions instead of one long one. Can't get motivated to start on homework? Set a certain time aside for homework with no distractions and everyone settles down at the same time.

11. Go through their closets with them and eliminate clothes they no longer wear. Toss out items that are too stained, ripped or broken to fix. Donate the good stuff that your child has outgrown or just doesn't wear anymore. Pack away sentimental items that they never wear but cannot throw out -- don't let that old scout uniform or outfit they wore in a wedding take up valuable closet space now. If you buy new clothes or shoes for school, help your children make room for them so they won't have to struggle to cram clothes into too-full closets or drawers.
This video of a little boy dancing to "Express" from the film "Burlesque" is making the internet rounds, and, like many viral sensations featuring kids, the content is of questionable taste. So, help us settle a debate at ParentDish: Is the video innocent fun? Or does this child's act seem humiliating, and possibly forced?
