With 19 kids, it's probably a safe bet that Arkansas couple Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar will have a slew of grandkids running around one day. The count is already at two, even though they still have their own 18-month-old daughter at home.

"Today" reports a baby boy was born to Josh Duggar, 23, the oldest son of the reality show couple, and his wife, Anna, June 15. The name of the baby is being kept secret for now, but according to the news show his name will start with an "M," same as his big sis Mackynzie, 20 months. All of the Duggar kids have names that start with the letter "J."

Want a peek at the baby? You'll have to wait until he's featured on "19 Kids: First Grandson" June 19 on TLC, "Today" says, adding that Grandma Michelle, 44, says there's still a chance she'll have more kids of her own.
Only You Can Control Your Online Privacy

Kids are growing up in public -- and this is especially true when it comes to Facebook.

Everything they say or do adds up and affects their reputations.

You can help your kids protect their privacy by making sure they use their privacy settings.

Every time Facebook introduces new privacy controls, you'll need to update your settings.

What parents need to know

Kids today are growing up in public - and this is especially true when it comes to Facebook. Countless details of their lives appear in pictures, conversations, and random thoughts. The issue here is simple: What they say or do on Facebook adds up and affects their reputations.

The simplest and most effective way to help your kids protect their reputations and privacy is to make sure they use their privacy settings. Our video shows you how to set the key Facebook privacy controls and what each setting means.

All about the settings

First, log into Facebook and click on the "Account" tab. Next click on "Privacy Settings." In each area, you can control what information is public and what information is private. Your kids need to set controls in three areas: Connecting on Facebook, Sharing on Facebook, and Apps and Websites.

Connecting on Facebook

Here's where you can control who can contact you -- and how -- as well as who can see certain information. Click on "View Settings" and then click into each section to select the level of desired privacy. We recommend selecting "Friends Only" for the settings on this page.

Pay close attention to the section that says Search for you on Facebook. Do you want anyone on Facebook to be able to search for your kids? We recommend no.

Sharing on Facebook

These settings allow you and your kids to see at a glance what information you're sharing -- and with whom. For most teens, the "Friends Only setting" is a relatively safe bet. But you can also fine tune these settings by clicking on "customize settings." If you choose this option, you can limit your circle to Friends Only, or to specific people - you can also block certain people. Your child can even make certain things visible only to himself.

Be sure not to check the box for "People Here Now" after I check in." CSM recommends that teens avoid location services.

Further down the page is another key setting, "Edit album privacy." Here, you'll be able to set which groups of people can see your photos -- we recommend "Friends Only" or customizing to name specific people to include or exclude. And "Friends Only" goes for the rest of the sections on the customize settings page.

Apps and Websites

Located on the Privacy settings main page, this section pertains to what information can be shared about you by app companies, other websites, and even by your friends. The most important privacy control here is: "Info accessible through your friends." This is the only way your kids will be able to have a say about what information leaves their control and goes out through their friends. Once a friend shares something with THEIR friends - well - it travels far and wide and your kids can't take whatever it was back. Best to leave these unchecked.

The very last setting on the Apps, Games, and Websites page is a key one: Public search. Facebook prevents users registered as teens to be searchable on a search engine. But if your teen has used a different birthdate, they could be searchable. Bottom line, don't enable public search for teens.

What do your kids need to know?

Facebook regularly changes it feature sets. So you will have to stay on top of things and pay attention when they send you notices. But taking the time to make sure your kids have set their privacy settings means your kids will have more control over their reputations and privacy, and you will have more peace of mind.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

App for Mobile Phones Helps Diagnose Concussions

Filed under: In The News, Health & Safety: Big Kids, Health & Safety: Tweens, Health & Safety: Teens, Apps

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - The next tool in the campaign against concussions might be your smartphone.

A concussion expert at the University of North Carolina teamed with other head-trauma researchers to develop an application for mobile devices that helps determine whether someone may have suffered a concussion.

Jason Mihalik of UNC's brain injury research center joined Justin Smith of Psychological Assessment Resources Inc. and the Children's National Medical Center in developing the program.

Smith says it's the first observer-based concussion app. After the user answers a series of questions, the app determines the likelihood of a concussion and can email information to a doctor. Mihalik said Thursday that the basis for the app's question flow comes from materials provided by the Centers for Disease Control.

The introduction of the app is just one way to speed the response to possible concussions. One of the key issues discussed during the National Sports Concussion Cooperative's daylong seminar was how to most effectively bridge the communication gap between team doctors and the team athletic trainers, who often are the first to act when players suffer concussion-like symptoms.

"The documentation (of immediate symptoms) is very important, from, 'How did they get hurt?' to the mechanism of injury through those initial signs and symptoms, to 'How did they progress over time?'" said Bill Griffin of the National Athletic Trainers' Association. "It's not only what happens at the time of the injury, but how things change."

The cooperative consists of coaches, doctors, equipment manufacturers and parents, and the group was formed in March to study concussions and brain trauma injuries in an attempt to make sports safer.

"We're trying to do more. We think there is an opportunity to do more," said Art Chou, Rawlings' vice president of research and development. "The caution that we have as manufacturers is, are we ready to draw definitive conclusions? ... There's a balance there, and I think it's up to the research community to determine whether it is ready for prime time or not, because the issue is going to be one of public perception.

"The issue is, have we confused the public? ... I would like to see more consensus from the research community that supports that, because we need more data. We need to move the needle. ... The last thing we need, I think now, as a whole football community, is going back and forth and confusing the issue any more."

Mike Oliver, the executive director of the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment, continued to express a longstanding desire to come up with a safety standard for youth helmets.

But he cautioned that it's dangerous to rush to a conclusion before the scientific research is complete. NOCSEA, a nonprofit corporation, formed in 1969 in response to a need for a performance test standard for helmets.

"You want to have an answer. You want to have a solution to the problem," Oliver said. "You want to be able to say ... 'We do have a solution to the problem and you can have a level of confidence (that) you will have a level of protection. ... But we can't do that until we have the science behind it."
Location apps change the game by identifying your physical location:

Location apps let kids post their actual, physical location.

According to a 2010 study by McAfee Inc., 69 percent of kids ages 13 to 17 have included their physical location in their social networking status update.

Safety and privacy are the major areas of concern.

Marketers use these programs to send highly targeted ads.

If you're going to use them, set privacy controls to the strictest settings.

 Social Networking Gets Really Personal

Social networks connect kids online. But a new technology takes connecting a step further -- to face-to-face meet-ups. New programs called location-sharing use geographic information from your smartphone to connect people to specific places, as well as to each other.

You may have heard of some of the most popular ones: Loopt, Foursquare, Gowalla and Facebook Places. Most of these programs are designed for smartphones, but they also can be accessed on the Web. Once you join, you can post your actual physical location.

And that's what makes location sharing a no-go for kids and teens. These programs bring up two big issues: safety and privacy. Since they let you post your location, they can expose your kid's whereabouts to anyone they "friend" -- or, in some cases, to any other user of the program. Also, advertisers are already using social mapping to target users with ads and incentives to visit their businesses (most of which are bars and restaurants).

Foursquare was one of the first entries into the location-sharing game. Here's how it works: When you sign up, you import contacts from other programs like Facebook, Twitter and Gmail. Using Foursquare's mobile website or its smartphone app, you "check in" -- send a message saying where you are and what you're doing -- and the program alerts your friends to tell them where they can find you. (Foursquare does allows you to hide your location, so you can check in without revealing it.) Foursquare uses a gaming motif, which makes it especially appealing for kids.

Facebook Places is available on iPhones or accessible through the company's touch.facebook.com site. It gives you the option of sharing your location with your Facebook friends and checking specific locations to see if your friends are there. For users younger than 17, Places is an "opt in" feature, meaning you have to enable it to use it. But make sure you check your kid's privacy settings anyway.

Gowalla works very much the same way as Foursquare, with a gaming aspect that rewards people for visiting certain places and doing interesting things. Unlike Foursquare's more finely customizable privacy settings, Gowalla's privacy settings are either on or off -- allowing people to view you or not. But Gowalla retains certain features that are publicly available even if you've checked "off." For example, if you recommend something, your recommendation appears under your user name.

Another popular program in this category is Loopt, which is currently only available as a downloadable app with phones using GPS. It's also geared more for singles looking for relationships -- the personal profile asks you to check boxes indicating your relationship status and what type of relationship you're looking for.

Like Facebook, Loopt gives its users the ability to send messages to friends, and while its ability to connect people face-to-face is highly targeted, it does offer fairly customizable privacy settings, including the ability to hide your location and block people.

What Parents Need to Know

1. These programs aren't for your kids. Ignore the "ratings" you may see online. The apps must be downloaded, and even though they're free, you'll get a receipt for it, so you'll know whether it's been installed. Either way, check your child's phone for these apps. You need to know what they're doing.

2. If you think it's OK for your kid to use one of these apps, then you must make sure that their privacy settings are set to the strictest options (as in, designated "friends only). That said, there are no guarantees that your child will be 100% protected from strangers or unwanted advertisers.

3. Since the programs allow users to post directly to Facebook or Twitter from any location, questions of safety and responsible behavior must be addressed. You don't want someone telling everyone about a party at someone else's house.

4. Finally, don't our kids have enough ads in their lives? These programs have the ability to send highly targeted ads -- to your kids' favorite store at the mall, for example. Constant advertising has a tendency to give people the "gimmes." Reinforce the fact that they can use the word "no."

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Best Storybook Apps for Kids

Filed under: Activities: Toddlers & Preschoolers, Activities: Big Kids, Activities: Tweens, Apps

All parents remember their baby's first smile. And there's nothing better than when your kids actually develop their own sense of humor. Sharing a private joke, silly song or even a nonsense story is more than just a fun way to pass the time: Laughter actually strengthens our bond with our kids.

Of course, all they need to know is that it's funny. So keep the comedy coming with our editors' favorite funny books, TV shows, movies and games.

If you're looking for laughs, cartoons are the perfect place to start. And, don't tell your kids, but some of the silliest animated shows actually sneak in a little learning with the jokes.

Older kids may prefer sitcoms, but sometimes you gotta go old school (think "Family Ties") to find the perfect blend of depth and humor. And, sometimes, even snarky shows such as "The Simpsons" leave room for positive messages.

As long as you're opening the entertainment vault, why not revisit classic comedies featuring the singularly hilarious antics of Charlie Chaplin, the Marx Brothers and Cary Grant? And the mix of old and modern favorites on our list of Best Family Movie Laughs will have the whole family in stitches.

No matter how old you are, funny books are one of life's great pleasures. Our picks offer a motley crew of characters for your reading entertainment, including an interrupting chicken, a genius of unspeakable evil and a ghost girl.

And, finally, there are even some age-appropriate laughs to be found in the world of mobile apps. Playing your way from guffaws to giggles is the stuff that memories are made of.
What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that "ABC Wildlife" is an innovative teaching app about animals from A to Z. The app links to YouTube videos that are curated by the Peapod Labs staff and are chosen to be interesting and safe for kids. The app teaches the alphabet using images and videos and allows kids to jump to new words by tapping the letters. There is also an iPad-specific version, which sells for $1.99.

The good stuff

Ease of play: The app is well designed for small children, with only a few different places to tap and no way to get lost or misdirected. It is very easy to get back to the ABC screen, but children can also jump to another word by tapping a letter in a word.

Educational value: "ABC Wildlife" teaches the alphabet by showing animal names from A to Z -- each word has a photo, a video, and bit of informational text. Also, any letter in the word can be tapped to jump to a word starting with that letter.

What to watch out for

 Violence: Not an issue.

 Sex: Not an issue.

Is It Any Good?

"ABC Wildlife" is an innovative app that teaches the ABCs. The app starts with a grid showing letters of the alphabet and at least one word for each letter. Tap on a letter to bring up an animal starting with that letter, or tap a specific animal name to jump to that animal. Each animal is accompanied by a photo, the word (with letters held up by little cartoon people), and a voice reads the initial letter and then the word itself. After a brief pause, another little cartoon person pops down holding a screen, which the child can tap to watch a video about that animal.

Tapping any of the letters held by the people jumps to another animal that starts with that letter, and the process repeats. Also, tapping the "abc" button jumps back to the alphabet grid, and the grayed-out squares are replaced by thumbnails of the images already viewed. It's a fantastic app that allows kids to learn the alphabet while watching entertaining videos and exploring links. The app is self-contained and doesn't present any options or settings screens, making it very kid-friendly.

Rated ON FOR Ages 8 and Up

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that the latest free update of "Angry Birds Seasons" introduces 15 new St. Patrick's Day-themed levels of the wildly popular physics puzzle game "Angry Birds." The previous 15 Valentine's Day levels, 45 Halloween levels, and 25 Christmas levels are still playable too. For players who did not have the "Angry Birds Seasons" already, it's a $.99 new app purchase. Gameplay is exactly the same (launch birds from a slingshot to collapse structures and destroy the pigs hiding inside), only now the backgrounds include fields of shamrocks, pots of gold, and pigs with red beards and leprechaun hats to destroy. There's even an Irish remix of the theme song featuring tin whistles. Also available are an iPad version of the game, "Angry Birds Seasons" HD, and an Android version of the game.

The good stuff

Ease of play: The controls are easy to master, but the puzzles themselves can be quite tricky to figure out. All instructions are shown in pictures, so no reading is required.

Educational value: The game boasts realistic physics, and winning involves using trajectory, speed, and momentum to your advantage.

What to watch out for

Violence: When birds make contact with an obstacle they disappear in a tuft of feathers, but they demonstrate no pain and seem perfectly willing participants in the mayhem. Defeated pigs disappear in a puff of smoke. Pigs that are damaged but not yet defeated display bruising.

 Sex: Not an issue.

 Language: Not an issue.

Consumerism: The app contains links to download the original "Angry Birds," sign up for the "Angry Birds" email newsletter, buy "Angry Birds" plush toys, watch an "Angry Birds" video trailer, and visit the developer's Facebook and Twitter pages. With the St. Patrick's Day update, users can also send Angry Birds-themed St. Patrick's Day cards through Facebook.

Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not an issue.

How safe is it?

Personal privacy: Players can post to leaderboards, and buttons on the title page lead to YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. These are optional. Players can also opt in to Apple's Game Center to track achievements, and for some games, challenge friends. With Game Center, players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname. Requesting or accepting a friend via email will reveal the first and last name associated with each party's Apple ID and the sender's email address. After failing a level, you may be offered a link to search Bing for tips; this takes you out of the app and to the Bing site.

Is It Any Good?

"Angry Birds Seasons" isn't a true sequel to "Angry Birds" since gameplay is essentially the same except for the new seasonal themes (St. Patrick's Day, Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine's Day). Nevertheless, the 100 levels (45 Halloween-themed, 25 Christmas-themed, 15 Valentine's Day-themed, and 15 St. Patrick's Day) are as challenging as ever and are a great value for players looking for an extra dose of "Angry Birds" fun. The destruction is done in such a silly and cartoony way that it's unlikely to make anyone uncomfortable.
The new bedtime story reader? Credit: Getty Images

Once upon a time, long before computer games and DVDs, reading a story at bedtime was a treasured ritual for parents and their little ones. This snuggle time with Mom and Dad gave kids time to chill out and fall asleep in safe arms with loving voices whispering enchanting tales of dancing princesses and magical fairies.

But, now, busy parents don't have to be at their kid's bedsides to sing lullabies. A new iPhone and iPad app will take care of that for you.

"Nursery Rhymes with Story Time" is being marketed as a way for parents never to miss bedtime again -- even if they are across the globe away from their kids, London's Daily Mail reports.

It works like this: Parents plug a microphone into their iPhone to speak to their kid, while the child's touch screen guides her through "Humpty Dumpty," and a host of fairy tales, making the pages move, the newspaper explains.

At the end of the story, according to a video showcasing the app, Dad tells the kid to sleep tight and the child tucks himself in and falls asleep, no fussing.

The cost for this 21st century storyteller? You'll need an iPad for your kid ($499), an iPhone for you (starting at $49.99) and the app from iTunes ($3.99 a story).

The app is coming under fire from online groups who believe it could lead to a lack of bonding with children, the Daily Mail reports.

"There is no replacement for actually being there with your child," Ruth Whitehead, 37, who has a 2-year-old son, tells the Evening Standard. "It might be OK as a last resort or if you are away on business, but I fear it could just make parents lazy."

But, Chris Stevens of Atomic Antelope, which developed the app, tells the Daily Mail the discussion needs to happen.

"You can argue that it's a real shame having a child read a story through a cold slab of glass," Stevens tells the newspaper. "But, on the other hand, if the alternative is not having a story at all, I think it's a good option."

Would you use this app? Or are you sticking to books? Join the discussion on Facebook!

Cut the Rope (Chillingo, $.99-$1.99)
The goal of the game is ridiculously simple: Feed candy to a little monster named Om Nom that you receive in the mail. But Om Nom's treats are always suspended from a tangled web of ropes above the critter's head. You need to -- here it comes -- cut the ropes in just the right way, so that the little sweets land right in Om Nom's waiting maw. It's not nearly as simple as it sounds. The realistic physics are where the game really shines -- these ropes swing and sway just the way they would in the offline world. It's addictive and, one can argue, educational. Play it and you'll see why it won.
Fruit Ninja (Halfbrick Studios, $.99-$2.99)
You are the deadly assassin. Your finger, your sword. Your enemy? Fruit. The joy of this insanely frenetic game comes from the visceral thrill of slashing away at flying pineapples, watermelons and kiwis. Slice them in half -- or in quarters if you're fast enough -- and watch the juices splatter as the pieces scatter. You can't miss any, though (nor can you accidentally hit one of the bombs that are often thrown in among the fruit), or it's game over. It may sound like a one-trick pomegranate, but it's a wildly good time. And if you need a bit more variety, Halfbrick also publishes "Veggie Ninja."
Plants vs. Zombies (PopCap Games, $2.99-$6.99)
If you've heard some kid talking about this goofily-premised game, you may have assumed they were misspeaking. But no, it really is about flowers and shrubbery fending off hordes of the invading undead. While it may sound silly at first, the wit and ingenuity of the game becomes apparent as soon as you start playing. As the zombies slowly shuffle (or on later levels, frantically run) toward your home, you need to plant seeds along their paths -- seeds that will sprout all sorts of botanic defenses, think literal "pea" shooters and "cherry" bombs. Since it is a monster horror game, there is a bit of violence (zombies may lose a limb or a head here or there), but it's all being perpetrated by produce, which certainly makes it less horrifying.
Land-a-Panda (Big Pixel Studios, $.99-$1.99)
OK, "Land-a-Panda" is a relatively new app, not a proven commodity like the others on this list. But everything about it makes it feel like its going to spend a long time sitting next to these others at the top of the app charts. It's adorable, for one thing -- the game's mission has you trying to reunite two lovelorn pandas, all within a bright, colorful game world. It's got easy-to-pick-up controls (basically all you need to do is tap a cannon to launch your panda out of it, and occasionally rotate the cannon to aim it), but deceptively challenging game play (as you blast your round beastie from cannon to cannon, the path you choose is key). And it's got a catchy title. Will "Land-a-Panda" be as big as "Angry Birds"? Who knows? But the potential for a hit is definitely there.

Angry Birds (ClickGamer, $.99-$4.99)
Speaking of miffed avians, even if you've heard the occasional reference to "Angry Birds," you may not really be familiar with it. So here's a primer: Evil green pigs have stolen the eggs from some birds; the birds, as one might expect, get angry. They seek revenge by launching themselves at their enemies with a giant slingshot. Why they need the slingshot -- since they are birds, and should ostensibly be able to fly -- no one knows. But it proves to be a solid weapon for them, as the pigs are hiding away in very shoddily constructed fortresses made of sticks (perhaps they're related to the Second Little Pig?). Knock down the structures and flatten the pigs to win. It's ridiculously entertaining. And generally inoffensive in terms of kid-friendliness. The ball-shaped pigs get a bit bruised and battered along the way, but it never even reaches Looney Tunes-level violence.
What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that "Jack and the Beanstalk Children's Interactive Storybook" is an adaptation of the children's classic story with several interactive elements, including games, songs, and activities. The story is well illustrated, and every page is full of tappable elements that move the story along as well as some that are just fun (such as hidden golden eggs that contain a dancing chick). As in the classic tale, Jack kills the giant by chopping down the beanstalk.

The good stuff

Ease of play: The book is incredibly easy to navigate except for one screen, which has puzzle elements (users must touch the screen enough to reveal the majority of a hidden picture before they can turn the page). This can interrupt the flow of the story.

Educational value: Words are highlighted a phrase at a time as the narrator tells the story -- a feature that users can toggle on or off as they choose.

What to watch out for

Violence: Jack kills the giant by chopping down the beanstalk. Bones also litter the outside of the giant's castle. Neither, however, is presented in a frightening manner.

 Sex: Not an issue.

 Language: Not an issue.

Consumerism: A link on the main menu takes users to other works by the developer. Readers are also reminded of the company's other apps via an animated ad at the end of the story.

Drinking, drugs, & smoking: The giant has a beer stein on his table, but the contents are never discussed.

Is It Any Good?

"Jack and the Beanstalk Children's Interactive Storybook" is a blueprint for interactive children's books. Each of the app's 32 pages has entertainment elements, with dozens of hidden surprises. For instance, touch Jack enough on one page and he'll break into song. On another, touching the right onscreen picture opens a memory game. Phrases, rather than words, are highlighted as the story is narrated; users have the option to turn highlighting on and off, giving the app a wider range of potential users. The app is dense with kid-friendly features, and will make a nice virtual library addition.
What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that in "Cows vs Aliens," your goal is to herd cows into a barn and keep aliens out. In the process cows and aliens can be pushed off the cliff (and off screen). The game has a curious control scheme; the instructions aren't very helpful but the controls can be picked up easily nevertheless. High scores are tracked on Game Center, but this is optional and no personally identifiable information is automatically shared.

The good stuff

Ease of play: Mastering the controls will require understanding where to push so that the cows and aliens will move away from that spot, which can be tricky at first, but players will learn to use multiple fingers to corral the cows into the barn. The "how to play" screens aren't very helpful at all, but the game becomes more intuitive as you play. Also, after a game is over the cow on the screen will occasionally offer gameplay tips -- some of these would have been helpful in the "how to play" section.

Educational value: Meant to entertain rather than educate.

What to watch out for

Violence: The player tries to keep the aliens from getting into the barn by pushing them away and off the cliff, which causes them to scream as they fall away. Cows can also be pushed off the cliff, and they moo as they fall.

 Sex: Not an issue.

Consumerism: There is a button on the main menu for more games from the developer, with links to the App Store for purchasing.

Drinking, drugs, and smoking: Not an issue.

How safe is it?

Personal privacy: Minor privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Apple's Game Center to track achievements, and for some games, challenge friends. With Game Center, players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname. Requesting or accepting a friend via email will reveal the first and last name associated with each party's Apple ID and the sender's email address.

Is It Any Good?

"Cows vs Aliens" is a funny arcade game -- cows and aliens enter from the bottom of the screen and move toward the open barn at the top -- but the cows meander, and the aliens move a little more intentionally. The controls are simple but somewhat tricky: Wherever you push, a blue circle appears and pushes cows and aliens away from it. By using up to five fingers (or up to 11 on the iPad), you (and a helper) can corral cows and separate out the aliens, shoving the them off the cliff. The game ends if you run out of time or if an alien reaches the barn. There's not a lot of variation in the game other than a gradual increase in difficulty with faster aliens, but it can still be pretty addictive.
What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know "Tiny Wings" is an arcade game that combines physics and rhythm. Players control a flightless bird who gains altitude by sliding down hills, then catches air when he hits the peak of the next one. By pressing the screen at the right (or wrong) time, you can accelerate his speed going down the hill or hamper it going up. The further you go, the more distance you put between the bird and nighttime. (Once the sky is filled with stars, the game is over.) Like "Fruit Ninja" and "Angry Birds," this app has a simple premise that can be very addicting. The game does not have any violent elements, but does connect to the Open Feint service, where children could potentially choose to share their personal information with strangers.
Is It Any Good?

Not since "Angry Birds" first hit the App Store has a title so captivated the iAudience, and "Tiny Wings" deserves the praise. It's a game whose success lies in its simplicity -- the controls consist solely of touching the screen at the right time. That might sound a bit thin, but this is the type of game you'll find yourself playing for long, long periods. It is, in many ways, Zen-like. Beyond the core gameplay, there's an added bonus: the various islands you'll explore change every day, giving the title an incredible amount of replayability, as you can't simply learn a pattern and repeat it time and again. "Tiny Wings" is one of those rare games that makes you feel good as you play, letting you root for the chubby little bird on screen and share his joy when he takes to the sky.
What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that "Olivia the Great" is a game that is part hidden object and part memory enhancement. The game has players hunt down everyday objects in Olivia's room. Once they have accomplished this, they're shown finger swipes that allow Olivia to perform various "magic tricks" for her friends. The further along in the game children get, the more complicated the swipes become -- and the later ones are likely too advanced for young players. There are some stability issues as well, as the app will sometimes crash without warning. It will remember which tricks you have learned, but any audience Olivia has gathered will have dispersed when you return.

The good stuff

Ease of play: Gameplay consists of finding objects in a cluttered room and remembering which finger swipes result in which magic tricks. Finding the objects isn't hard, but as the number of spells increases, kids might have trouble remembering which swipes do which tricks.

Educational value: Children can use the app to improve their memory skills and object identification abilities.

What to watch out for

 Violence: Not an issue.

 Sex: Not an issue.

 Language: Not an issue.

Consumerism: The app is educational, but ties in with the Olivia show, a successful children's program that airs on Nick Jr.

Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not an issue.

Is It Any Good?

Somas Games has already made an Olivia game that targets very young children with Olivia, so it's nice to see them aim a little bit older with "Olivia the Great." the game won't be too challenging to anyone over the age of 8, but younger kids will enjoy the search for hidden objects and the tricks Olivia performs when the mimic-the-finger-swipes shown on screen. The early puzzles are easy even for younger kids, but later puzzles tend to be a bit more complicated, which might frustrate some children. However, the varied difficulty makes the game accessible to a wider age range of players.
What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that "Fox in Socks" is a digital version of the classic Dr. Seuss tongue-twister book. There is one section that involves battling beetles hitting each other with paddles, and the fox gets shoved into a bottle, but otherwise the book is free of violence and other iffy content. The main page links to the other book apps by the developer.

The good stuff

Ease of play: Very simple to use: Choose a mode, tap on objects to learn the words, and swipe to turn the page. Autoplay mode will read through the entire book without any additional input.

Educational value: With the Autoplay mode, the app reads the story and turns the pages. In the Read to Me mode, the app reads the story but pauses at each page to allow time for exploration. With the Read It Myself mode, the app simply displays the words. In both read-aloud versions, the words are highlighted as they are read. Also, tapping on objects found on each page results in the word being displayed and pronounced.

What to watch out for

Violence: There is a section of the book about tweetle beetles battling and hitting each other with paddles. Also, at the end the frustrated Mr. Knox shoves the fox into a bottle because he is tired of tongue twisters.

 Sex: Not an issue.

 Language: Not an issue.

Consumerism: On the main menu there is a link to other picture book apps from the developer. Also, on the info screen, there are links to the developer's website and the Seussville website. Occasionally the app will pop up messages suggesting other book apps to purchase.

Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that "How Rocket Learned to Read" by Tad Hills is an adorable picture book about the joys of learning to read. It is also a very nice learn-to-read app in itself. In addition to the story, the app offers a pair of educational mini-games. There are also multiple points during the story that kids can tap interactive spots that allow them learn words and letters. There's even a place (an open field of snow) for them to practice writing.

The good stuff

Ease of play: One of the mini-games -- which requires kids to tilt the iPad back and forth in order to slide Rocket across the bottom of the screen and catch falling letters -- requires a bit more precision than many preschoolers have. But outside of that, the app is incredibly easy to use.

Educational value: Kids can read along with the story -- words are highlighted as they are spoken by the narrator. The story itself is also educational, as it is about learning to read. The mini-games included are reading-based educational games, and there are multiple places within the story that allow kids to review letter sounds and word beginnings.

What to watch out for

 Violence: Not an issue.

 Sex: Not an issue.

 Language: Not an issue.

 Consumerism: Not an issue.

Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not an issue.

Last year it was the "snowpocalypse." This year's it's "snowmageddon." Whatever you call it, the extreme weather immobilizing most of the country all adds up to one thing for kids: snow days!

Sure, you may have to make up the days in June, but when you're looking down the long side of winter, summer seems so far away. For now, enjoy the downtime, drink some cocoa, and stock up on fun family entertainment. (And if it's rain or even plain old laziness that's got your family indoors, we won't tell anyone!)

In choosing our snow day favorites, we looked for the best movies, games, music, apps, and TV shows for all ages. These picks will keep kids' minds and bodies active -- and maybe even teach them a little something along the way.

Movies, music, games, and more

"The Snowy Day" -- Bright color cut-outs and lively language create a book that's both soothing and exciting.

"Dora the Explorer: Dora Saves the Snow Princess" -- In this game, kids explore snowy expanses and underground tunnels, swing on snowflake chains, race down mountain slopes on snowboards, and more.

"Snowflake Bentley" -- This book about the life of a self-taught scientist should maintain kids' interest as they learn about snowflakes and nature.

"The Sword in the Stone" -- Positive lessons about courage, the importance of brains over brawn, fair play, and the power of love liven up this movie about the legend of King Arthur.

"Word Solitaire: Aurora" -- For new spellers, this app is a delightfully entertaining vocab-builder based on the rules of solitaire.

"Active Life Explorer" -- Burn off energy with this active Wii game that lets four people play at once.

"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe" -- This movie's classic tale of good vs. evil offers ice castles and snowy expanses to get lost in.

"Flying Wild Alaska" -- Beautiful shots of the Alaskan tundra, mountains, and rivers inspire a respect for the wilderness and environment in this reality show about a family business.

"My World 2.0" -- Enjoy hip-hop pop from one of the world's most beloved performers.

"Dance Central" -- Just dance! If you're lucky enough to own a Kinect, throw down your moves with this game or Dance Dance Revolution.
What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that "Word Solitaire: Aurora" is a word-based puzzle game that is in the same vein as the playing card standard. Six (or seven, depending on the mode) columns of cards containing letters are laid out on the screen, and users must use the entire deck to create words by dragging letters on top of one another. The game offers several modes for players -- from a pick-up-and-go quick play mode to a 250-level campaign. The game is chiefly a single-player game and safe for children, but it does have a global mode, letting people match their scores against others on a daily puzzle. (A leaderboard displays the username of the top five in several categories, but no other personal information.) The app is also available in an iPad-only version called Word Solitaire HD.

The good stuff

Ease of play: It's no harder to learn this game than it is to learn solitaire with a deck of cards. In fact, it's easier -- assuming you know how to spell. There's also a tutorial to guide you.

Educational value: The app makes users think about spelling as they assemble words from a random assortment of onscreen letters.

What to watch out for

Violence: Not an issue.

Sex: Not an issue.

Language: Not an issue.

Consumerism: A link from the main menu takes users to a page listing more games from the developer.

Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not an issue.

How safe is it?

Personal privacy: Minor privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Apple's Game Center to track achievements. With Game Center, players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname. Requesting or accepting a friend via email will reveal the first and last name associated with each party's Apple ID and the sender's email address.
