My new book, "Feed Your Face," is a fun and easy guide to getting the best skin of your life - no expensive products or prescriptions required. In addition to the delicious 28-day meal plan it features, the book is packed with yummy, face-friendly snack ideas, a Restaurant Guide, and real-life stories (including those of some celebrity friends). Here are my top five tips:

1. Be sure to eat a good breakfast. This helps keeps your blood sugar stable the rest of the day, so you're better able to fight wrinkles, breakouts, and rashes. Plus, it also means your body will be less likely to store fat, so your clothes will fit better. But this doesn't mean you can have just anything for breakfast (so no, I'm not giving you permission to eat donuts and danishes). Instead, be sure to include protein. For example, add peanut butter to your toast or lox to your bagel. If you have time in the morning, scramble some eggs and slice a tomato on the side. For breakfast on the go, try Greek yogurt topped with berries (tastes like cheesecake!) or order an oatmeal topped with almonds at the coffee shop.

2. You can eat pizza! But not the greasy, deep dish kind piled high with bacon and sausage. Instead, ask for thin crust, preferably whole-wheat; get it light on the cheese, and add protein (like grilled chicken) as well as green and yellow veggies to fight crow's feet. For an extra dose of antioxidants, have a glass of red wine on the side.

3. For clear skin, stay away from dairy. Milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, and other dairy products have been linked to acne breakouts. In recent years, research has shown that dairy is inflammatory, which means that it leads to redness, swelling, and pus-all of which can worsen pimples. Even if you choose organic milk products, which are made without bovine Growth Hormone, all milk products contain intrinsic cow proteins that can have a hormonal effect on your skin and lead to increased oil production and clogged pores. Try switching to soy milk or almond milk. If you do, just make sure you're getting your calcium another way.

4. Eat tomatoes every day to fight sun damage. Tomato paste has been shown to protect from sun burn and sun damage. This is because tomatoes contain a high concentration of a substance called lycopene, which is an antioxidant. This means it helps protect skin from the damaging effects of UV rays. Make them readily accessible by adding them to salads, sauces, and meats.

5. Steal this celebrity trick: Before a party or event where they'll be serving food, pre-eat before you leave so you won't be hungry for fattening, collagen-busting snacks upon your arrival. Some ladies carry baggies of snacks in their evening bag. I'm a fan of walnuts, baked green beans, and fruit with almond butter.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Opinion: Don't Pressure Us to Fit Into Our Teen Jeans, Brooke

Filed under: Celeb Kids, Celeb Parents, Extreme Childhood, Opinions, Diet & Fitness, Beauty & Style, Celeb News & Interviews

Apparently, not even 30 years, two kids and good sense comes between Brooke Shields and her Calvins.

This week, in an appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," the 45-year-old model, mom and actress revealed that she still fits into the famous Calvin Klein jeans she wore 30 years ago in her controversial jeans ad for the designer's denim.

"They didn't look pretty," she offered, "but they fit."

In case you've blocked out the '80s -- the decade of "Flashdance" leg warmers and "Working Girl" hair -- let me refresh your memory.

The innuendo-packed 1980 Calvin Klein ad features 15-year-old Shields sitting provocatively with her legs spread open, whistling "My Darling Clementine" (what's that about?) and suggestively offering, "You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing."
Continue reading Opinion: Don't Pressure Us to Fit Into Our Teen Jeans, Brooke

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Get Your Glam On With All Natural Makeup Sticks

Filed under: Shopping, Beauty & Style, Tween Culture

We can't get enough of Mom, and lucky for us the blogosphere is just chock full o' love for mothers as we close in on her special day. Check out our weekly picks for the best of the Web and don't forget to let Mom sleep in this weekend!

Over at our fashionable sister site, StyleList, one mom gets a fantastic makeover courtesy of her devoted sons: "Bonnie is a single mother who devotes her life to her children and the ones she teaches. Compassionate, caring and completely selfless, her boys thought their mom should be made top priority." You will seriously not believe this transformation.

Ellen from "Love That Max" is a mom to a son with special needs, and she celebrates her peers with her "Top 20 Reasons Moms Of Kids With Special Needs ROCK." You may remember her "Bill of Rights" for parents of kids with special needs from 2009, and she's at it again this week. Here's a sneak peek at No. 5: "Because we have bad days and breakdowns and bawl-fests, and then we pick ourselves up and keep right on going." Go. Read. Be inspired, and share.

We just happen to have terrific mothers-in-law, but not everyone is that lucky. Our pals at MomLogic offer a hilarious take on the perfect gift for that nosy, critical MIL in your life. Tell her off with these adorably snarky coupons: "Redeem for: One Criticism-Free Day." You'll laugh, you'll cry, you might tuck them in her Mother's Day card.

Motherhood has been big news this year, and the fine women at The Stir take a look back at all the stories that made us laugh, cry or throw our breast pumps at the monitor in an awesome interactive chart. Grab a cup of coffee and walk down moms-in-the-media memory lane.

If you're looking for a thought-provoking post about the complex nature of Mother's Day, look no further than this moving essay at the blog "Halfway to Normal" about the shifting nature of motherhood and how it evokes so many different, complex emotions. As author Kristin Tennant writes, "motherhood isn't nearly as straightforward as gynecologists say it is." Bring your hankies, folks.

The contest, hosted by our sister site StyleList, kicked off this week with eight women vying for the top honor. These brave souls all took the same clothing item -- a navy gabardine boyfriend vest -- and dressed it up or down according to their own personal style.

For the next few weeks, style guru Kelly Cutrone, owner of People's Revolution and co-star of MTV's reality shows "The Hills" and "The City," will judge the ladies' looks. We're rooting for Carly J. Cais, an Oregon mom and fashion blogger who daringly paired blue tie-dye leggings with the vest. Cais admitted that the look was a risk, and it didn't win her any points with Cutrone -- the fashion guru said she didn't dislike the outfit, but she didn't like it, either.

Click here to watch the video challenge on StyleList>>>>>>>>>

We can't wait to see what else Cais has in store. Tune in and pick up some fashion pointers; don't be That Mom who grocery shops in her ratty old sweats. (And please keep it on the down low when you see us dressed in said sweats.)
Love, Chic Baby is cologne and perfume for babies. The company says on their website that they have made "the first pair of luxurious fresh scents designed exclusively for little girls and boys, and for those who want to pamper them." It's unclear how spraying a child with perfume is "pampering," but hey, different strokes for different folks.

The product comes in two versions: "Coco" for girls and "Momo" for boys. Coco is "a calming, airy fragrance" with "a soft bouquet of pink mandarin, Italian bergamot, water lily, pink peony, yellow freesia, island pineapple, and sheer rose," according to the company. Momo's scent "tickles the sense" with a mix of "mandarin, orange, pink grapefruit, wild strawberry, sweetheart melon, and dewberry." None of which sound terribly masculine. Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course.

At first glance, this seems like yet another wacko baby product, like last year's Heelarious, fake high heels for infants. On the other hand, many baby products are scented. So this one isn't really all that different. Except that this particular baby product has only one purpose -- to mask the stench of your kids.

Would you buy this for your baby? Or is it just plain silly?
What started with Soccer Moms has evolved into an encyclopedia of terms designed to put us in our appropriate box. In the recent past, we've seen the rise of Hipster parents, who strive to pass on their alternative tastes to their offspring; the Mousewife, who combines her desire to be a stay-at-home-mom with her need to earn a few bucks; and now we have the Momshell.

Unlike some of those terms, the meaning of Momshell is pretty obvious -- a combination of mom and bombshell. But what is also different about that term is that, unlike the others, it is used to describe the way a mother looks -- not what she does. And while it is surely meant to be a compliment, there are those who worry that this focus on appearance is ultimately harmful to women. Being a good mother and raising happy, healthy children used to be a worthy goal in and of itself. Now it seems that if we don't look amazing while we do it, we are somehow failing.

You may be secure enough to not feel any pressure to compete with the Momshells in your life, but the same cannot be said for the thousands of women who are auditioning for a new reality show called Hottest Mom in America. Maybe those moms are in it for the $25,000 college money prize, but I am sure the one free year of Restylane treatment is also a big draw.
Continue reading Are You a Momshell?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

New Hair, New You!

Filed under: Beauty & Style, Expert Advice: Just For You

One of the first things people tell a pregnant woman is this: do NOT cut your hair before the baby comes. No matter how good an idea it might seem in your eighth month of pregnancy to test out a pixie cut, don't do it. You'll be sorry.

Maybe. But maybe not.

Changing your hair is a simple way to change your look; just this week, Heather Mills -- who is still bouncing back from a bitter and public divorce from Beatle Paul McCartney -- rolled out a new 'do. Her golden locks are now short and platinum blond, which is a big change. Says Mills, "I'd actually been thinking about cutting my hair for quite a while. I hope now this is a fresh beginning."

Her new cut is flattering and sexy, and perfect for a mom who is starting over.
Keep hair soft and natural, like Kate Winslett. Air dry wavy hair, scrunching with your hand, for slightly shaped waves. Don't fuss too much with this, though -- just let your hair do it's thing.

Reese's sassy layered bob is a classic Mom Cut -- simple and unfussy, but still totally stunning. Best for thick, straight hair, this cut can be air dried until it's just damp; finish with a blast from the hairdryer to seal the cuticle and give it shine.

This year many women will drop out of the workforce to pursue their dream of becoming an at-home mom. Others may have a temporary stint as an at-home mom due to a layoff or some other employment disruption. However you become an at-home parent in 2009, the good news is that there has never been a better time! Spending your days caring for your children is a fulfilling and worthwhile endeavor worthy of your time and effort. Embrace it! But know that it is hard work that can sometimes seem thankless.

So, as you enter 2009, here are a few must-haves for veteran and newbie at-home moms alike. On the surface, some of the items may seem frivolous, but I can assure you that they are not! Taking excellent care of yourself is a challenge for all moms, but it can be especially challenging for moms who spend the majority of their days at home in the company of small children. So to start 2009, set yourself up for success by finding ways to make things easier and by making time to take care of yourself. When you don't feel neglected, you are more likely to be the mom you want to be!

1. Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Let's you keep your cool when your toddler draws on the wall.
2. Nursing covers for stress-free public feedings. I love Bebe au Lait.
3. At least one good-looking, comfy outfit you can go from home to store or school quickly. I love Barefoot Dreams clothing. Caution! They have beautiful baby products too!
4. Quality home spa products (facial mask, bath salts, creams). Pamper yourself more often and for less money. I use Mod.skin labs line for high quality, affordable products.
5. Exercise clothes that flatter your figure. Baggy sweats just make you feel like a slug. For cheap options, try Target.
6. Organic frozen cookie dough - even when I don't have time to bake, I love to feel like the "kool-aid" mom pulling warm cookies out of the oven to the oohs and ahhs of my kids. I love Better Bakes from the Immaculate Baking Co.
7. Hands-free baby carrier. Bjorn, sling, whatever fits your body.
8. Digital Camera that you know how to work and download to the computer
9. Notebook or journal for writing down those precious moments -- nothing fancy needed. Even a spiral notebook will do. No more guilt about not writing that stuff down. Keep one in the kitchen, living room and bedroom.
10. Candles and spiritual reading by my bedside. It's how I recharge my soul! (I am currently reading "Praying with Therese of Lisieux.")
p.s. Barefoot Dreams clothing can be purchased at Nordstroms - that's where I bought it. Look online for other retailers near you.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mom|Style: Shop for Trends

Filed under: Fashion, Beauty & Style
Sales are a good opportunity to pick up trendy pieces, things that will most likely not last beyond this season. But shop with restraint -- your money is wasted if you come home with a whole new wardrobe of things that will be unwearable in a few months. Look for trendy pieces that can be combined with more classic styles to give your look an edge; this tank is perfect because you can wear it now with a blazer or later with your yoga pants.
But if you're not going to wear that dress (or coat or sweater or necklace) it's not really a bargain; it's just a waste of money. Think less about the price tag and more about how this piece will fit into your wardrobe. Can you REALLY see yourself heading to Mommy and Me in a flouncy dress?

If the answer is no, then walk away, no matter how low the price.
