Just when new parents start getting the hang of having an infant, baby teething starts, sometimes throwing life with baby into a tailspin. Teething symptoms generally start between 3 and 12 months, and, while it will be about two years before all of a child's baby teeth come in, the discomfort of baby teething usually goes away when the tooth breaks the skin. Of course, with 20 baby teeth to grow in, pain from different baby teeth coming in can last several months. Baby teething is inevitable, and will likely mean a fussy child. Here are some tried-and-true methods of easing the pain:

Apply cold to the gums: An icy cold temperature is soothing on gums sore from baby teething. A moist frozen washcloth or even a popsicle (you can make them out of plain water if preferred) will work, but can be messy; the best bet is a freezable teether, such as the Munchkin Fun Ice Soothing Ring Teether ($3.99 from diapers.com). This teether is specially made for freezing, and stays soft, even when ice-cold. If you'd prefer a cold teether filled with purified water rather than non-toxic gel, the Natursutten Chill-it Teether ($11.99 from diapers.com) is water-filled to be chilled in the refrigerator.

Ask about topical teething gels: While mothers of older generations may insist that nothing is better for baby teething than a little whiskey on the gums, even a tiny amount of alcohol is not recommended for babies by experts. For temporary pain relief from baby teething, an over-the-counter topical oral anesthetic gives more of a numbing effect than alcohol, anyway. Consult your child's pediatrician first, and only use gels designed specifically for infants.

Massage the gums: No teething gel, or just want to take a break from using it when teething symptoms pop up? Wash your hands thoroughly and massage baby's gums gently with your finger. Do this while holding and rocking the baby to calm her further -- the "cuddle hormone" released when the baby has skin-to-skin contact with a parent is believed to physically minimize pain, at least to some extent.

Pain relief drops: Your child's pediatrician may recommend administering baby acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) or ibuprofen (such as Motrin), especially if he has the baby teething symptom of a fever. These types of pain relievers can ease baby teething pain for a couple of hours. Never give a baby or child aspirin, however, and always check that any pain reliever, which comes in a dropper for infants, is specific to your child's age.

Baby teething symptoms usually don't require a visit to the pediatrician; as your baby gets closer to or begins teething, discuss recommended treatments during regular checkups. Call the doctor if teething symptoms are severe or last for several days, if baby teeth don't appear by 12 months or if you have other concerns.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Bassinet vs. Crib: Where to Put the Baby

Filed under: Baby Essentials, Gear Guides: Babies, Sleep

So, you're planning for a new baby. You know you'll need a crib for at least a couple of years, until it's time for a "big kid" bed -- but what about when the baby is brand new? Over the years, the baby bassinet or cradle has come to be considered less of a nursery necessity; because it only gets use for a few weeks, many parents choose to go straight to a full-sized crib. That's fine, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, as long as you place the baby to sleep on her back wearing a sleeper, with no heavy blankets, pillows or crib bumpers. Still, there are reasons why using a bassinet might be a good choice for you.

A bassinet's small size allows it to be easily placed next to a bed. Unless you have a huge bedroom, chances are adding a full-sized crib by the bed is out of the question. It's recommended that newborns sleep in the same room as their parents for the first few weeks -- about the same amount of time a bassinet or baby cradle is useful as a baby bed -- especially if the mother is nursing. This allows for the baby to be checked on frequently during the night, and just having the baby in the same room early on can help give parents peace of mind.

It's easier to place a newborn into a bassinet. The high sides of a crib mean you may have to lean over them if the sides don't come down. You can place the baby in the bassinet from a sitting position on a chair or bed, if necessary, which is a benefit while the mother is recovering from the delivery, especially if she had a C-section.

There is little room for the baby to move around. Although, truthfully, a swaddled newborn isn't going to be any more mobile in a crib than a baby bassinet, psychologically you may prefer the small size of a bassinet or baby cradle.

Bassinets can be portable, unlike most cribs, allowing you to move the baby's bed to any part of the house for nap time. Portable bassinets are also convenient for visiting friends and family those first few weeks. To get the most out of your baby bassinet, look for a model such as a Badger Basket Portable Bassinet 'n Cradle, which converts to a toy box after the baby outgrows it.

You may have inherited an heirloom cradle or bassinet, or found an antique baby cradle you've fallen in love with. In most cases, the beautiful old cradle is safe to use. Be sure the mattress pad fits snugly; in addition, an old-fashioned wooden cradle shouldn't have hazards such as protruding hardware or legs that might give out, and check to make sure that any paint is not lead-based. If you do use an older bassinet, make sure it meets the current safety guidelines.

If you decide against purchasing a bassinet for your baby, don't feel guilty. Bassinets are not recommended by most pediatric experts in lieu of cribs -- it's the parents' choice. What is really important is that you don't put hazards like pillows and blankets in with the baby, that you make sure that the bassinet or crib you use is not under recall and/or meets safety requirements and that you keep an eye on your baby as much as you can while she sleeps.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

12 Baby Bathing Suits Making a Splash This Summer

Filed under: Fashion, Gear Guides: Babies
An itsy-bitsy-teenie-weenie-yellow-polka-dot bikini isn't the only way to be the most stylish babe at the kiddie pool this summer. Decorating a stylish nursery doesn't have to require dipping into your child's college tuition fund. To help keep costs low, but style high, ParentDish asked some design pros for a few secrets to create a contemporary look for your baby's room.

First, think about color, which has gotten more sophisticated in recent years. Pink and blue have been replaced by silvery greens, pale yellows, grayish lavenders and even straight gray tones.

"It used to be more cutesy or gender specific," says Esther Sadowsky, owner of Manhattan's Charm & Whimsy. "Now parents want things to go with the rest of the apartment."

Los Angeles designer Sarah Barnard says parents are more fashionable than ever before.

"They're probably not going to be satisfied with a cartoon theme," she says.

One way to jazz up the walls without making a long-term commitment is to use stick-on art such as Wall Pops. Designers, including Sadowsky, love this type of wall art because it can add instant interest and color to a wall and then be peeled right off in a couple of years when you or your child gets tired of it.

Check out craft stores like Michaels and even Home Depot for supplies. Wall Pops come in funky, vintage prints and bright colors that can be combined in many nursery-friendly ways.

When it comes to furniture, think long-term. As hard as it is to imagine, your baby will be out of diapers and moving from a crib to a bed before you know it.

"My opinion is that it's very expensive if you have to buy two rooms of furniture for the same child," says Northbrook, Ill.-based designer Jeff Smoler. "I try to do to it so all the furniture has a dual function."

He recommends a chest of drawers with a detachable changing table and a crib that converts to a youth bed.

Barnard says many parents now want their nursery to be environmentally friendly, too. She recommends second hand furniture, low VOC paints, natural bedding supplies (such as organic cotton sheets and blankets) and even natural latex crib mattresses for nurseries because she believes natural products are healthier for babies. She doesn't want anything that gives off that "new car smell" in a baby's room.

If you insist on buying new furniture, Barnard suggests spending a little extra and buying something well-made that can be passed down to a future generation.
You've probably figured out by now that singing to you baby puts a smile on his face, and even makes him laugh. But, how many times can you sing him the same lullaby without driving yourself crazy?

Time for a new CD! 'Sing To Your Baby,' is an 11-song CD accompanied by a 32-page illustrated book that acts as a coach for parents who want to communicate with their babies through song. Multi-GRAMMY winning musician/author duo, Catchy Fink and Marcy Marxer, have been creating music for families for 25 years.

It is their belief that singing is the best way for babies to develop communicative skills and that the more words a baby hears during infancy, the more prepared he or she will be for learning during school years. The CD, 'Sing To Your Baby,' is produced with a wide variety of instruments including acoustic & electric guitar, five-string banjo, mandolin, cello, ukulele and more.
It wasn't that long ago that parents were constantly lugging babies around in detachable car seats -- not any more. When you need to get something done and your new baby wants to be with you, try an infant carrier.

There are lots of cool options that can free up your hands, while keeping your baby safe and close to you.

"I use my Ergo when I go grocery shopping rather than a car seat in the cart, " says Jessica Morrison, a sales associate at Boston's Tadpole. "If I need my hands free to get my 3-year-old into preschool, or the baby wants to be with me while I'm cleaning or doing laundry, it's great."

Morrison tells ParentDish in a phone interview that she uses the Ergo for her 7-month-old and wishes she had it when her 3-year-old was a baby.

"I even used it when my son was 2 -- we went on a light hike," she says.

The Ergo has a waist strap, in addition to shoulder straps, and the weight of the baby is mainly on your hips, making it easier to carry the child longer, according to Morrison. The Ergo allows a baby to be held in front of you, on your hip and also on your back when they get older.

Of course, infant carriers aren't entirely new. The classic Baby Bjorn, which holds babies in front, has been a staple since 1961. But in recent years, parents have been offered a growing number of options from which to choose.

Some parents prefer fabric slings to hold their baby close and keep their hands free, Target spokesperson Jana O'Leary tells ParentDish in a phone interview. Hotslings and Munchkin's Jelly Bean are fabric slings that are top sellers in Target stores and can be found at reasonable prices, she says. The colors and prints, reversible on the Jelly Bean style, are fashion-based and appeal to busy parents.

"A lot of parents like to use the slings for newborns because they are in a reclining position, they're close to you and you can snuggle the baby as it curls into you," Morrison says.

She admits, as a nervous first-time mom, she was not as comfortable with some of the sling options, but says many people she knows have no reservations and love their slings.

Whatever you decide, be sure to do a test run in the store with your baby before you buy.

"Be aware the first time you try it, your baby will scream," Morrison says. "But I think persistence pays off. All of them feel a little awkward at first because you're not holding your baby."

She urges moms to keep an open mind, because the right infant carrier offers comfort, safety and, most importantly, freedom.
Jamie Broza: "I Want a Dog!"
Broza is one of the few artists who has children singing on his album and the results aren't cloyingly sweet. Most of these songs -- several of which have a groovy, "Girl from Ipanema" feel to them, speak directly to little kids. Although, there's a nice bit of parent-guilting in there, too, on "Turn That Phone Off". Young ones will enjoy both the pleasant tunes and the funny, not-corny skits. As a side note, 20% of all proceeds go to the North Shore Animal League.

Moona Luna: "Piñata Party!"
For a deviation from your standard kid-pop, try the bilingual, Latin-tinged tunes of Moona Luna. Never mind that the disc can help kids pick up a little Español (or at least augment the Spanish they learn from Dora), it's also the kind of can't-help-but-make-you-happy music that will give them lots of exercise with all the dancing they'll do, too.

David Weinstone: "Music for Aardvarks and Other Mammals: All I Want!"
As usual, Weinstone offers a real mix of music. Some track's sounds come off like the interactive sing-a-longs of a children's music class (which is how Music for Aardvarks got its start), while Weinstone channels his inner Kurt Cobain with grinding grunge guitars on others. There's a big mix, but all of the 19 tracks stand a good chance of making little kids happy.

Ella Jenkins: "A Life of Song"
This album, part of Smithsonian Folkways' African American Legacy Recordings series, is without a doubt, the most edifying of the new year. On this CD, octogenarian and national treasure, Jenkins sits down with a bunch of kids, chatting about her own life and history -- while singing her way through classic African American folk, blues, and spiritual tunes. It's a first-person history lesson set to music.
If you haven't heard any of Daddy A-Go-Go's previous seven albums, this "greatest hits" compilation is a great way to introduce yourself and your kids to John Boydston's pop-culture-strewn rock songs. Some of the references may feel a little old at this point (Backstreet Boys, Johnny Bravo), but the puns, "For Those About to Walk, We Salute You," and "Eat Every Bean and Pea on Your Plate," still have as much zing as the guitars.
But we found several coffee tables that won't add any more bumps and bruises to your little one's head.

You want a stylish coffee table, but here's the reality: Kids will fall and climb on it and probably bump into the sharp edges daily. Since you can't do too much to curb their clumsy ways, you need to be sure that your furniture can break a fall without breaking a bone.

We've rounded up a variety of attractive coffee tables, most under $300, that won't be a danger to little heads, hands and feet.
Soft Tables
Ottomans or padded tables are a great coffee table alternative. You can use trays and platters on top if you need to rest drinks or food, but while your child is playing you can feel relieved to know that he won't be getting any boo-boos if he falls onto it. Here are a few options I found that would work great in any style home.

From top left, clockwise: Upholstered Dhurrie Slab, $299, West Elm, is a low rider. The patchwork fabric will hide spills and stains and it acts like an oversized pillow so no bumps or bruises. You could probably use this as a body pillow when guests aren't around! Add the removable Raw Wood Side Table, $149, when entertaining guests.

The Homeelegence Coffee Table Ottoman with Trays, $299, Hayneedle, isn't even real leather so you don't have to feel bad if it gets scratched up. Covered in a soft surface, this ottoman table is perfect for a family and can double as a set of tray tables on family movie night.

The leather Modular Storage Ottoman, $150, Target, will easily wipe clean and prevent injuries while hiding toys and coloring books inside.
Super Soft Movable Cubes
Sometimes you need extra seating, storage or space more than a coffee table, which is why movable cubes are the perfect option. You can place multiple cubes together to create a cohesive coffee table or separate for added seating when entertaining guests. Some of these cubes are even light enough for the little ones to move around on their own.

From top left, clockwise: The Safavieh Hud4063A Lorenzo Storage Ottoman, $148, Sears, has hidden storage for toys and coloring books. It's made of leather and has a protective coating for stain resistance. And it makes the perfect footrest.

The P'kolino Storage Ottoman, $229, Modern Nursery, comes with an upholstered top that flips over to reveal a wooden underside, perfect for sitting drinks atop when entertaining or using as a solid coloring surface for the little ones. Inside, you can stash magazines or toys. And -- bonus -- it's vinyl, so cleaning up after sticky fingers is a snap.

Modern moms take note of the Gus*Modern Jasper Cube, $250, Allmodern.com, which is available in simple gray or a cute tree pattern; the Detour Square Cube is a steal at $75, Sitbetter.com, comes in a nice, bright orange along with a few other neutral colors, too; and the Patent Cube, $198, Chiasso (easily wipes clean).

Looking for something with a handmade feeling, or perhaps something a little rounder? These Knitted Poufs, $80, CB2, a piece and create a more relaxed feeling then a square ottoman.
Round Tables
Nothing says kid-friendly like no corners or sharp edges. Round tables aren't going out of style any time soon so don't worry about feeling behind on the trends.

From top left, clockwise: Back to basics: you won't feel bad if the simple wood VEJMON coffee table, $150, IKEA, gets a little crayon on it now and then. Rounded edges protect baby while protecting you from worry.

The Brunswick Table, $379, Raymour & Flanigan, combines the rich wood of a round coffee table with the softness of an ottoman.

If you're looking to buy a table that's fun for kids and adults, try this Powell White Round Chalkboard Table, $118, Sears. With this table, you don't ever have to be concerned if your child decided to draw outside the lines.

Another more polished-looking coffee table is the Chambre Round Cocktail Table, $299, Macy's. When guests come over, you no longer have to be embarrassed that your home looks like Romper Room.

The Smart Round Coffee Table, $299, CB2, is a modern-style table with a marble top and metal legs. Note: This is definitely not a safe pick for parents with crawlers and toddlers. But we included it for those determined to have marble in their living room -- If you are going to go with marble, a round option is definitely best. It's a little lighter and more airy than a dark wood table or heavy ottoman, and you don't have to worry about damage because the top is as durable as a marble countertop.

When it comes to choosing car seats for your kids, start your research in the garage.

The first thing parents should do is consult their car's owner's manual and examine the contour of their backseat, says Stephanie M. Tombrello, executive director of SafetyBeltSafe U.S.A.

The manual will offer information on how and where to install the seat in the car, she says, adding that the angle and depth of the back seat are especially important when choosing infant seats because babies need to be riding at a particular angle.

Although many states only require parents to keep a child in a rear-facing seat until the child is 1 year old and weighs 20 pounds, safety experts urge parents to keep children rear facing until they are at least 2.

"Riding rear facing is five times safer than forward facing," Tombrello says.

Car seat manufacturers are making it possible to follow the recommendation by making rear-facing seats that can accommodate children up to 45 pounds, she says.

They also are making the seats deeper to give children more leg room, adds Lorrie Walker, training manager and technical adviser for Safe Kids Worldwide.

The higher weight limits mean children can use harness-style car seats longer before moving into a booster.

State laws vary about when children can start riding in booster seats, but Walker tells parents to keep their children in them as long as possible. Her organization recommends children use booster seats until they weigh between 80 and 100 pounds and are about 4 feet 9 inches tall.

Don't let your children or other parents pressure you into relaxing your car seat standards, Walker says. Her organization also recommends children ride in the back seat of a vehicle until they are at least 13 years old.

"You want your child who's 7 to be just as safe as when he was a newborn," Walker says.

Tips for choosing and using car seats:

Look for car seats with straps that are easy to tighten and adjust.

Always read the instruction manual of a car seat while installing it.

Do not allow the car seat straps to sag. You should not be able to pinch the fabric between your fingers.

Car seats are installed tightly enough when you cannot move them more than an inch to either side.

If you have two children in car seats, place a rear-facing car seat on the side and a booster or forward-facing seat in the middle.

Replace car seats after a crash. (Many car insurance companies will pay for replacement seats after an accident.)

Whether you're expecting twins, or you have two stroller-sized children of different ages, a double stroller is a must for most parents. But, with so many styles on the market, shopping for a set of wheels for your kids can be a bit overwhelming. These strollers aren't cheap, so you better get one you love.

Here's a look at some popular options, and pros and cons of each.

	Side-by-side:

Pros: They're pretty easy to maneuver, unless you have to go through narrow doorways. Kids sit next to each other, so older kids can play and won't fight over who gets to sit in the front (or back).

Cons: Most side-by-sides can't hold infant car seats, and if your children are prone to fighting, you might not want them sitting so close to each other. If your children are of different weights, it may be tougher to steer one of these. They also take up a bit more room when folded.

Front-to-back (tandem):

Pros: Getting through doorways is easier than with a side-by-side, and, when folded, they don't take up too much room. Many tandems hold two infants in car seats or an infant and a toddler. They also have stadium seating, so the child in the back can see over the other child's head.

Cons: They can be heavy, and turns aren't easy.

Jogger:

Pros: They're often lightweight and good for rougher surfaces. Also, as the name suggests, you can use it while running or jogging.

Cons: Many joggers aren't recommended for newborns, as they offer no head support, and they're a bit bulky for the mall or other crowded spots. You'll likely need a traditional stroller in addition to the jogging stroller.

Sit and stand:

Pros: Also called a Stand-On, these strollers allow a bigger child to sit or stand on the back step and are great if you have a newborn and an older child.

Cons: Your toddler might drive you crazy hopping on and off the back.
