Bath time with a baby can be scary for new parents, but if you've got the right tub, it's not only a breeze but fun, too.

The Puj Tub is made with soft, non-slip, PVC- and BPA-free foam that will conform to just about any sink and cradles babies up to 17 pounds, leaving Mom and Dad hands-free to take care of Junior.

When the baby's all clean, the tub can be stored or hung flat, keeping it out of sight.

We have three words: Baby. Shower. Gift.
One of the most exciting parts of getting ready for your new baby is the nursery planning. As your life changes, so does your home, as you establish a room for baby. The nursery should have a few basics: a crib or bassinet, a changing table, a rocking chair and a dresser to hold the baby's clothing and blankets. The decor is a matter of taste -- some parents pick a whimsical theme, some decorate according to the baby's gender and some decorate according to their own personal style. Unless you truly enjoy redecorating every few years, it's a good idea to opt for baby room ideas that can grow with your child, but as these design sites show, the sky is the limit when it comes to nursery decor.

Spearmint Baby has lots of clever baby room ideas, including popular Gender Neutral Nurseries for parents who don't go for a lot of pink frills or powder blues. Bold colors accent a neutral backdrop, with reds, yellows and greens in the chair, art, bookcase and stuffed toys. A gray room for baby may sound cold, but with bright orange curtains and blue and green accessories, it's modern and cozy.

Project Nursery has a huge project gallery of baby room ideas. We love the fall colors and feel of the October Baby Nursery, with its chocolate brown furniture and orange and beige walls. The mobile over the crib suggests falling leaves and birds flying south for the winter. Brown, orange and white round paper lanterns are a cool design touch that pulls the autumnal theme together with a slight nod to Halloween that will have visual appeal all year long.

ShelterPop rounded up a collection of "Seriously Stylish Nurseries" that turn a simple room for baby into a haven of pop art, nature or cozy fabric. There's even a stylish thrifty baby room idea where hand-me-downs are pulled together with the addition of a couple of fashionably cool pieces -- great for nursery planning on a budget.

MomFinds.com has baby room ideas for cute themes that break away from duckies and Winnie the Pooh, including a roundup of adorable accessories and decor for an elephant-themed room for baby. The elephant rocker is a unique toy that baby will enjoy as he gets older, and makes a fun piece of decor during infancy.

Coochicoos, "a design blog for modern parents," offers baby room ideas that are chic and unusual, often utilizing bright color (or white with splashes of bright color), modern art, whimsical furniture pieces and offbeat nursery accessories such as chandeliers, hat racks and surf boards.

Little Crown Interiors is a good resource for luxurious, more traditional baby room ideas, such as the Elegant Boy and Glamorous Pink nurseries, as well as gender neutral designs such as the Unique Yellow nursery. Use the site as a nursery planning guide, or utilize their nationwide e-design services.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Bellybuds

Filed under: Gadgets, Music, Gear Guides: Pregnancy

Some moms-to-be want their growing babies to get a head start on a love for Beethoven. For others, it's the Beatles. Or Bono. Maybe even Bjork or Bon Jovi. We don't judge.

But have you tried stretching a pair of headphones across a big pregnant belly? It's not pretty. Thank goodness for Bellybuds. The safe "bellyphones" adhere with medical-grade, skin-safe hydrogel rings that are also reusable.

They also come with a VoiceShare app so moms, dads, grandparents, siblings -- perhaps even Jon Bon Jovi -- can record messages for the wee one that Mom just downloads and plays on the buds.

If baby arrives and soon comes to appreciate Spandex and asks you to sing "Livin' on a Prayer" as a lullaby, you'll know why.
Keeping track of all of the baby supplies can be exhausting. And when you're heading out for a trip? Forget it. There's barely room to fit the baby in, the car gets so packed.

Which is why we appreciate great items that can do double -- even triple duty. Take the Deluxe 3 in 1 Combo Carrier from Snazzy Baby. Your baby can be strapped in to face you, face away from you or ride on either hip. It can be used for breast-feeding. And a portable travel chair feature lets you turn a regular chair -- or shopping cart -- into a high chair restraint, giving you a little freedom.

It also comes with a storage pouch for snacks, wipes or your phone. And -- bonus! -- each carrier comes with a free pair of Snazzy Baby Leg Warmers.

For children ages 4 months to 2 years, the carrier is $79.99, at Snazzybaby.us.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Stylish Spring Looks for Expectant Moms

Filed under: Fashion, Gear Guides: Pregnancy

We've seen a lot of dolls here on ParentDish. There was Bebé Glotón, the breast-feeding doll. Then there was the pole-dancing doll. There's also new Barbie Video Girl, which prompted a warning from the FBI.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, we bring you MamAmor, the Doll That Gives Birth. (Warning: the website plays music that will make you think you're at the Lilith Fair.)

After giving birth -- complete with placenta -- she also breastfeeds. The "babies" have a snap for a mouth, which attaches to the mama doll's chest.

MamAmor dolls are made by Adriana Guerra, who, according to her website, is a doula and "the mother of three wonderful children -- born at home, breastfed and carried almost all the time -- and the wife of a loving and supportive husband." On her etsy page, Guerra says, "Creating my MamAmor dolls has been one of the most meaningful and creative ways to express my passion for birth, breastfeeding and attachment."

In an interview with BirthSource, Guerra says that she believes that "introducing a doll like this to children who will have a little brother or sister soon will help them to understand birth using an age appropriate toy." She says it will also "incorporate birth and breastfeeding into their belief systems, as natural events in life." She adds, "MamAmor dolls can help to make a better world" because they could help families to "be more open to have, or support, natural birth and breastfeeding in the future."

MamAmor dolls cost $130, or $145 for a custom job. Also available are accessories including slings, diaper bags and glasses. According to the MamAmor page on BigCartel.com, the dolls are sold out as of this writing, but a new batch is due on December 12th.

In honor of World AIDS Day and their partnership with (RED)[TM], stroller-maker Bugaboo has teamed up with style icon and rockstar mom Gwen Stefani to create a one-of-a-kind Bugaboo Cameleon stroller that will be auctioned off to help eliminate AIDS in Africa.

Stefani designed this unique Cameleon using a floral/graffiti print from her iconic fashion line, L.A.M.B. And, for an extra touch of rockstar glam, lined the front and back of the stroller in Vachetta leather trim, embellished with rounded pyramid studs.

The auction goes live on eBay today at 12 p.m. PST and will run through Dec. 5., with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Global Fund, helping to reach the goal of eliminating mother-to-child HIV transmission by 2015. For more info or to bid, visit the Bugaboo auction page.

While only one lucky fashion- and socially-conscious baby will get bragging rights to this hip stroller, anyone can help support the fight against AIDS in Africa through (RED) just by purchasing a Bugaboo product. Bugaboo is the only company that donates 1 percent of sales from all of their products to the Global Fund.

Many other companies have teamed up with (RED) to develop special product lines that benefit this important cause. Take a look at some more of our favorite (PRODUCT) RED stuff: Converse sneakers for kids and adults; Gap t-shirts for men and women; Beats by Dr. Dre headphones; limited edition Penguin Classics books; and even a special edition Apple iPod nano.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Too Cute: Faux Shoe Socks for Babies

Filed under: Baby Essentials, Fashion, Gear Guides: Pregnancy

When you have a new baby in the home, your heart may be full, but your pocketbook is probably empty. Clothes, accessories, diapers, nursery furniture, crib bedding ... the shopping list can seem as long as the nights you spend rocking your fussy wee one to sleep.

But since your newborn can sleep up to 18 hours a day, nursery shopping should be at the top of your list. Buying a nursery set is a quick and easy way to set up your child's room. The nursery sets on this list fit all price ranges and decors, and most include free shipping to your home. Get ready to strike another task off that list.

DaVinci Jenny Lind 3-in-1 Stationary Convertible Mobile Wood Crib Set with Changing Table in White, $287.96: The spindle details on this nursery furniture set give it a traditional look, while the crib's brass caster accents add to the set's classic charm (and make it easy to move your baby around). The crib can be transformed into a toddler-sized bed with an optional conversion kit, and the mattress can be adjusted to four levels to accommodate your baby's comfort. The crib's matching changing table also includes a waterproof changing pad.

3-Piece Nursery Set: Crib, Changer and Mattress, $299.99: This hardwood, classic nursery set was originally $699.99, but is now more than half off. It includes a crib, mattress and changing table (buying a set with a mattress is a huge coup, as most nursery sets don't include them). The crib converts to toddler daybed, too -- a nice bonus.

Best of all, it's on sale for half of its original list price.

Just because you have a baby on your hands doesn't mean traveling is no longer an option. However, you do need to be prepared for all the challenges the road -- and your youngster -- are sure to throw at you.

Sippy cups, toys and blankets are essential items to take on any trip. But, if you're a family of real jet setters, getting a travel crib for your little bundle of joy is a must, as well. Of course, not all travel cribs are created equal, and crib safety is something you need to keep in mind. Here are some tips on making sure your child is safe away from home.

Collapsed cribs can be dangerous, so always set your travel crib up properly to prevent it from collapsing. Make sure to lock the top rails of the crib. Don't use travel cribs with rotating hinges in the middle of each top rail, as they present collapse and choking hazards to infants.

The right travel crib also should have the right sized mattress, which needs to run flush against the sides of the crib so your baby doesn't get caught between the mattress and the crib itself. Make sure it's a tight fit.

If you prefer to use a hotel or motel crib instead of purchasing your own travel crib, use caution. A study by the Consumer Product Safety Commission found that 80 percent of hotel cribs were unsafe. Many hotel cribs are poorly maintained and use adult-sized, rather than crib-sized sheets. Using adult-sized sheets in cribs can suffocate infants. If you are going to use a hotel crib, make sure to bring crib-sized sheets with you just in case.

Travel cribs should hold nothing but the baby. Infants may use toys to try and pull themselves out of the crib and they may get tangled up with accessories. Don't hang anything off of the side of your travel crib, either, as anything loose can become a strangulation hazard.

Check the mesh walls of the crib for tears or holes once you've set it up; any loose fabric could become a choking hazard. The openings in the mesh itself should be less than a quarter inch in diameter. If the crib has slats instead of mesh, the openings should be less than two and three-eighths inches in diameter to keep your toddler in place.

Never leave the side of a mesh travel crib down -- children can get trapped in the pouch of fabric that's created when the side is down, which can cause suffocation.

Remember, the right crib, set up and maintained properly, can be extremely safe and convenient. If you're in the market for a portable crib, the Baby Bjorn Travel Crib, $219.95, is highly rated. It only weighs 11 pounds, takes seconds to set up and is incredibly safe and easy to use.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Clever Bottle Brush Does a Stand-Up Job

Filed under: Baby Essentials, Gear Guides: Pregnancy

Shopping for baby bags can be overwhelming, with all sorts of diaper bags out there from which to choose. To help you narrow down your choices for the best baby bag, consider the following features that are essential for the perfect baby changing bag.

Fabric. You want to choose a baby bag with a durable, easy-to-clean exterior fabric because this baby changing bag will go everywhere with you -- play dates, the park, the supermarket and more. You should expect the diaper bag to get dirty and sticky, and the easier the baby bag is to clean, the better. A heavy-duty moisture-resistant nylon or microfiber fabric is the most practical, especially if you want this baby bag to last through more than one child. Look for a diaper bag that's washable inside, as well, since you're likely to have milk and juice spills and other accidents inside the bag.

Secure closure. To ensure your baby bag will stay closed to keep baby bottles, diapers and toys from falling out, look for a secure and functional closure, such as a durable magnetic snap front closure. Another thing to keep in mind when you're looking at the closures on baby bags is how easy it will be to open. You want a closure you can easily open with one hand so you can grab what you need and go. The best baby bags will have a good magnetic snap closure that will securely hold all of its contents, yet still be easily opened with a firm one-handed tug.

Handles vs. hands-free. If you prefer a baby bag with handles, keep in mind that wide and well-padded straps will be the most comfortable. Make sure the straps are securely attached to the bag. You'll also want to look for a strap that is long enough to be slung over your shoulder or worn diagonally across your body. Then there's the option of selecting a baby bag that will keep your hands and arms free, such as a backpack. If this is the type of baby bag you want, check to see that its straps are adjustable and look for a sternum strap connecting the shoulder straps at the upper chest to help redistribute the weight, making it easier and more comfortable to carry.

Storage. The best baby bags are loaded with pockets to keep everything organized in its proper place. Easy-to-access pockets for the things you'll constantly be needing, such as baby wipes, pacifiers and your cell phone, are essential for your peace of mind. Make sure the zippers are durable and heavy-duty. Be sure there are separate compartments to keep dirty diapers away from food, drink and clean clothes. And, if you'll be doing a lot of traveling, look for a baby bag with an insulated cooler section.

Style. This is completely up to you. Some moms love baby bags with pastel colors that actually look like diaper bags, while other moms want something a bit more stylish and functional that can be used after your baby is out of diapers. With so many different styles and colors of baby changing bags available, you're sure to find something that fits your aesthetic sense.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Bassinet Shopping Guide

Filed under: Babies, Baby Essentials, Gear Guides: Pregnancy, Gear Guides: Babies

Cozy little beds perfect for newborn babies, bassinets are portable cribs you can carry from room to room so your sleeping baby is always close by.

If you're bassinet shopping, consider the range of styles of these baby cradles -- from a multi-use bassinet to a contemporary stylish bassinet to a travel bassinet. Once you've checked out the features of each type of bassinet, you'll be better able to select the perfect one for your baby.

Multi-use: Since babies quickly outgrow sleeping in a bassinet, it makes sense to shop for a bassinet with multiple uses, such as The First Years Carry Me Near 5-in-1 Sleep System in Nature's Peace. This baby cradle may be used as a portable sleeper with an ergonomically designed handle for easy carrying; a typical bassinet that you can rock back and forth or lock into place; a bedside sleeper that attaches securely to the side of your bed; a play seat complete with fun plush animals that dangle from the canopy; and a changing table with a separate surface from the sleep area that's easy to clean, making it a versatile piece of nursery furniture. With soothing vibrations and five peaceful audio selections, your infant will find sweet slumber in this bassinet.

Another multi-use bassinet, the Kolcraft Contours Classique 3-in-1 Bassinet has a classic and elegant look, allowing it to easily blend into your child's nursery. This bassinet can transform into a Moses basket with handles, as well as a changing table that attaches securely on top of the bassinet's rails. To keep your baby gear organized and convenient, use the included hanging deluxe organizers and diaper stacker. This bassinet comes with a thick, vinyl-covered mattress with a washable terry cloth fitted sheet.

Contemporary: For a bassinet that looks contemporary and chic, the Fisher-Price Zen Collection Bassinet will make your child's nursery look like it's set in the Caribbean. Part of the exclusive high-end Zen Collection, the wood accents and earthy colors of this baby cradle give it a sophisticated look. Featuring automated head-to-toe gliding motion, you can control its movements with a variable speed control knob. With two wheels to allow you to move this bassinet from room to room, you also can lock the wheels to keep it from rolling. Plus, with 15 songs and a collection of sound effects, you're sure to find the perfect tune to soothe your baby to sleep.

Travel: If your family travels often, you may want to consider doing some travel bassinet shopping. The Kolcraft Tender Vibes Travel Bassinet with Music folds up compactly for easy travel and storage. A great option for grandparents to keep at their homes, this bassinet features five classic lullabies and vibrations to soothe the baby and two soft toys to hang from the canopy. Included with this bassinet is a vinyl-covered mattress with a washable fitted sheet.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Baby Boy Clothes: Homecoming Outfit

Filed under: Babies, Baby Essentials, Fashion, Gear Guides: Pregnancy, Gear Guides: Babies

You've stuffed your hospital delivery bag with a robe, slippers and other comforts from home, but don't forget to include baby boy clothes when you pack.

You'll take lots of photos at the hospital and possibly even more for baby's homecoming. While many moms opt for practical newborn boy clothing, others want a special baby boy homecoming outfit to be captured on camera. Here are our tips for picking the perfect baby boy homecoming outfit.

Consider family heirlooms: Save money on baby boy clothes by opting for gently-used hand-me-downs or a family heirloom. Since homecoming outfits are often treasured keepsakes, it's quite possible your mother-in-law still has your husband's baby boy homecoming outfit or the baby cap he wore. It would be a sweet, sentimental gesture to use Daddy's homecoming outfit or to wrap the new baby in your treasured baby blanket.

Bring a spare outfit: Newborns drool and spit up. A lot. So bring an extra outfit to the hospital. It's not uncommon for moms to bring their babies home in a completely different outfit than planned because their newborns spit up all over the original homecoming outfits.

Think about sizes: On message boards, moms frequently complain that their babies "swam" in huge outfits marked 0-3 months, while larger babies could be too big for the newborn boy clothing their mothers packed. Since babies have delicate skin, you'll want to wash the outfits in advance, which can make a too-small newborn outfit non-returnable. Our advice? Bring a size 0-3 months outfit to the hospital and leave a newborn outfit and a bigger sized outfit at home. If your baby is too small or too big for the 0-3 month outfit, then your husband or a friend can remove the tags from the correctly sized baby boy clothing at home, wash it and bring it to the hospital.

And here are some of our favorite baby boy clothes that would be perfect homecoming outfits:

The baby layette includes essential baby clothing items and linens. Credit: Getty

New mothers know they're going to need diapers. And bottles. Not to mention a car seat and stroller. But when a woman is expecting her first baby, there are several other items her baby will need, too: clothes, bed linens, bathing supplies and other essentials.

These items are known as the baby layette. The word layette is old French for chest of drawers, and is now defined as a complete set of articles, including clothing, bedclothes and other accessories for a newborn baby.

When our grandmothers and their mothers were expecting their babies, they probably spent hours sewing simple outfits, knitting sweaters and blankets and preparing the baby layette. Outfits worn by babies were often unisex for the first year or so because they would have to be made before the baby was born, when the gender was still unknown.

Often called gowns, these outfits were usually layered and lovingly embellished with embroidery, smocking, tatting or soft lace. Clothing was made mostly from soft cotton and carefully hand-sewn to help make smaller and less irritating seams. Often, the mother also would make the baby's christening gown, and other female relatives and friends would make something to contribute to the baby's layette, such as receiving blankets, diapers and bonnets.

Nowadays, new mothers can skip the hand sewing and shop for baby clothes, but the necessary items for the baby layette are basically remain the same.

The old list looks like this:

They're totally adorable. And sweet. And oh-so-snuggly. If you're a shopper, one of the best things about having a new baby is the chance to buy newborn baby clothes. But doing a little research before you start splurging on all the darling offerings is a must. See, what a parent purchases and what a baby actually needs are sometimes completely different things.

Here are some tips on what to look for before you start shopping.

Be a Softy. The first thing to consider when shopping is a baby's tender, sensitive skin. Buying 100 percent cotton clothing helps ensure the fabric will be soft and washable. Feel the inside of everything you buy. Often, the things which make newborn baby clothes so cute, such as embroidery, elastic gatherings, zippers and other embellishments, also can make an outfit uncomfortable to an infant. If you do end up with some scratchy things on the inside of an item, dress your baby in a softer under layer such as a onesie first, and then layer the cuter outfit over it.

Layer it on Thick. Layering is often necessary with newborn baby clothes. Onesies worn under sleepers, or paired with cotton pants and a little jacket are good ideas. Hats keep heat from escaping from the head, socks keep little feet warm -- just make sure you opt for socks that are long and go up toward the knee, not little ankle socks that fall off every few minutes. And some people get little mittens for their baby's hands, mostly to keep those tiny fingernails from scratching lovely new cheeks. Just be sure the layers are loose and comfortable.
Continue reading Newborn Baby Clothes: Must Haves

Permalink | Email this | Comments
