Brooke Shields' life "not perfect"

Toddlers, Kids 5-7, Money & Work, Gay Parenting, Life & Style, Celeb Parenting, Childcare, Media, That's Entertainment

For actress Brooke Shields, life is far from perfect. And she's not afraid to admit it. The Lipstick Jungle star was very free with her words when she spoke with TimesOnline. And she's not afraid to admit that having and raising kids is tough for the working mom. Shields, now 43, is mom to two daughters with husband Chris Henchy, Rowan who is five and Grier who is two.

She's thankful to be on a hit show like Lipstick Jungle (from acclaimed Sex in the City creator Candace Bushnell) and to have had an incredible career that started when she was a mere fourteen years old, but, states Shields, ""I'm on the set of Lipstick, committed, yes, but constantly wondering how my kids are, where they are, sad when my daughter asks if she can stay up until I get home...." Just like any other working mother. Shields also says she's acquiesced to letting her kids stay up until she gets home and letting them into bed with her, which she said she would never do. Yes, even Brooke Shields, who once sported little more than Calvin Kleins and arm candy like Andre Agassi, has to make compromises. Good to hear they're for a five- and two-year-old.

It's also refreshing to hear that a celebrity mom thinks parenting and working is tough, that she admits to not being perfect and to giving in to her kids, and that she misses them and cares about what's going on with them. Celebs act like things are so hard all the time and they have these armies of nannies and other kinds of help that regular folks like us could never dream of. Occasionally we see them out with their kids for little more than what amounts to photo ops, whether they intend such outings to be such or not. I'm sure Brooke has her share of help--it would be impossible to star in a television series and not--but at least she's being realistic and honest with us that parenting--parenting done RIGHT--is not easy, and that perfection is far from reality.

Brooke Shields teaches her kid about the paparazzi

Kids 5-7, Money & Work, Safety, Celeb Kids, Life & Style, Celeb Parenting, Environment, Media, That's Entertainment, Special Needs

Actress and Blue Lagoon star Brooke Shields knows a thing or two about the paparazzi. Having been a child star and a young person in the constant eye of the media storm , Brooke has taken it upon herself to teach her children how to handle the media.

Brooke's daughter, Rowan, who is five, knows what to do when the paparazzi strikes. Says Rowan, when asked by her mom what to do when the media strikes, "Well, I look straight ahead and I don't look them in the eye." Shields is sorry her daughter even knows what the word 'paparazzi' means.

Shields says that teaching her children to ignore the press is a healthier way of handling them. The actress knows the paparazzi will be there no matter what she does, so better to ignore them than give them what they want, I guess. Shields is also mom to daughter Grier Hammond, two.

Tom Cruise changes his mind about post partum depression

Newborns, Just For Moms, Just For Dads, Pregnancy & Birth, Safety, Medical Conditions, Life & Style, Celeb Parenting, Behaving Badly, In The News, Environment

Seems Tom Cruise has reversed his opinion about post partum depression. He's also gone public with his change of mind and heart. In a recent interview with Oprah Winfrey, for whom you'll recall he jumped all over a couch as he professed his love for now-wife Katie Holmes, Cruise admits what he said about Brooke Shields in his other most-famous moment back in 2006. His harsh comments about Brooke Shields turning to medication--specifically anti-depressants--to treat her post partum depression came under fire from all sides.

Now Cruise confirms that what he said came out the wrong way, that he was raised by four women with babies and that he doesn't want to tell anyone what they should or shouldn't be doing or believing in. He insists what he said about Shields "came out wrong, it's just not true." Cruise has since apologized to Shields several times.

The damage, however, seems to have been done. Cruise was attacked by the media, mothers and feminists everywhere. His career seems to have taken a back seat to his rantings. In the interview Cruise comments that he regrets saying a lot of what he did and talking about Shields at all. Say what you will about Tom Cruise, and perhaps he's just trying to save face, but it does take some guts to come out and say you're wrong about something, especially when you admit it to the whole world.

By the way, remember the Tom Cruise from the pic? The young cutie? Hrd to believe how far he--and we--have come after all these years!

Brooke Shield's mother "disappointed" in celebrity daughter

Relatives, Celeb Kids, Behaving Badly, In The News

Brooke Shields' mother reportedly (and classily!) gave an interview to The National Enquirer complaining that Brooke doesn't have time for her and never brings the grand kids around.

Oh yeah, and her son-in-law is pretty crappy too!

"I don't see Brooke or my granddaughters much, and if they do come over, it's only for a little while and then they're gone," Teri told the Enquirer. "I wish I could see Brooke, but all she does is work. ... But (she) always makes time to visit her friends no matter how busy she is."

She added, "I'm often disappointed in (Brooke), like the times she snaps: 'What do you ever do for me?' That's what her husband tells her to say. I preferred Brooke's first husband, Andre Agassi, over Chris (Henchy, Brooke's current husband and father of her two daughters)."

To get a little historical perspective, I did a some research on Brooke's life and learned:

  • When Brooke was still an infant, Teri got the pretty baby in an Ivory Snow commercial.
  • She later became a child model for Eileen Ford.
  • Brooke starred in Pretty Baby, where the rumored-to-be-11-year-old-at-the-time Brooke played the role of a young girl living in a brothel, which included several nude scenes. Strangely, Susan Sarandon, who was playing Brooke's mother in the film provided Brooke with a nude-colored g-string so she wouldn't have to be completely naked during filming, rather than her real life mother.
  • At age fourteen, Brooke was on the cover of Vogue magazine and made the famous Calvin Klein commercial where she told the world nothing got between her and her Calvins.
  • Blue Lagoon was released when Brooke was 15 years old and she had to testify before Congress that body doubles were used for the nude scenes in the movie about cousins stranded on a deserted island.
  • Endless Love (where the director supposedly pinched Brooke's big toe really hard when doing a sex scene to fake an adult happy experience she had not yet encountered) came out when Brooke was 16.
  • In a 2007 interview with Life magazine Brooke said, " I left abruptly when I was 28. Growing independently of her (Teri) really changed my perspective. I have more empathy. I appreciate her more because she did shelter me from a lot, and she took the rap for it. But she's an alcoholic, and that affects everything. And she's very sad. We talk every day, but I have to draw a line. Or I get pulled back in."

It should also be noted that Brooke graciously forgave Tom Cruise for his idiotic televised theory that her stalled career was due to taking anti-depressants for post partum depression instead of using Scientology-approved method of magical vitamins and exercises, so clearly she has the capacity to overlook some serious transgression.

I don't blame Brooke for wanting to keep her daughters far from a drunk, crabby, grandmother willing to say bad things about their parents to the tabloids. Imagine the things that must be said in private at that house.

Brooke Shields daughter gets possessive

Preschoolers, Development, Celeb Kids, Celeb Parenting, That's Entertainment

Generally the source of a child's possessiveness toward a parent is the addition of a new baby or significant other to the family, but Brooke Shields' daughter Rowan was slammed with a double emotional whammy. Not only was she jealous that her mother was calling another girl her special term of endearment, the rival for her mother's affection was her idol, Hannah Montana.

Rowan was attending a taping of Hannah Montana where Shields was making a guest appearance as Hannah's mother. When Shields said the line "It's okay, baby girl." to Miley Cyrus, the four year old had had enough. The preschooler stood up in the studio audience and shouted, "Nooooo ... That's my mama for real life!"

Cyrus didn't take the interruption personally and later thanked Rowan for letting her borrow her mom for the day.

Aww, poor little Rowan. Not only does she have to share her mama with a darling little sister, now she's having to out-cute Hannah Montana!

Lucky for Cyrus, Rowan is young and sweet. If she were older and cattier, a pregnancy rumor might be just the thing settle the score.

Brooke Shields Feels Like the 'Odd Mom Out'

Celeb Kids, Celeb Parenting

I have always admired Brooke Shields. Besides being gorgeous and smart, she's managed to navigate the rocky road of stardom without turning into a tabloid joke. Tom Cruise might disagree, but I think she was blessed with a common sense that seems to be lacking in many celebrities.

Comparing her own stage mother to those of today's tabloid princesses, she tells Redbook in the September issue, "People used to say my mom used me as a commodity. But you know what? She did her own version of dysfunctional behavior, sure, but nothing like you see these days." Classy as ever, she doesn't mention any names, but admits she has no advice for young, out-of-control Hollywood starlets, saying "I don't want to say anything to them. I want to talk to their mothers."

At 42, she's a mother herself to two daughters -- Rowan, 4, and Grier, who turned 1 in May -- and clearly takes her job as a parent seriously. "I always feel like the odd mom out, because trust me when I tell you I'm on my girls. And every time I am, I know from the outside it looks like I'm an overbearing, controlling parents. But I don't think we have any responsibility to anybody else but our kids and ourselves." Amen to that.

Something tells me we won't be seeing Rowan and Grier in a future "girls behaving badly' special on VH1.

Shields and Holmes forge an unlikely friendship

Development, Celeb Kids, Celeb Parenting, Media

Despite any difference between Brooke Shields and Tom Cruise, it appears that Shields and Katie Holmes have struck up a friendship. The two women gave birth to their babies on the same day and at the same hospital.

When asked about the unlikely bond Shields replied, "Life is really short, and when you see these babies...I think you never know how life is going to bring people together, and it can be absurd and it can be interesting."

I think it is wonderful that Brooke Shields was able to rise above Tom Cruise's insensitive remarks about her postpartum depression and look beyond his words. By extending a friendship to Katie Holmes she is showing that she has grace and wisdom, both traits that her children will someday admire.

Brooke Shields describes her Three-Year-Old Diet

Bump Watch, Celeb Kids, Media, That's Entertainment

According to People.com, Brooke Shields is already back to fighting weight -- this, only two weeks after giving birth to her second daughter, Grier.  But Shields isn't stingy about it, and happily reveals her secret:  "Rent a 3-year-old and make sure you have to run after the 3-year-old and feel guilt all the time that you're not being in two places at once," she says. "It's the 3-year old diet."

Uh, yeah.  Sure.  That, and a whole heapload of really good genes, I'm thinking.

Brooke Shields has her second baby

Pregnancy & Birth, Bump Watch, Celeb Kids, Media

People magazine is reporting Brooke Shields has had her second child. The little girl, who's name is Grier Hammond weighed in at 7 pounds and was 20 inches long.

Grier is the second child of Brooke and husband Chris Henchy. Their first daughter Rowan will be three next month.

I hope she's stocked up on vitamins as Mr. Cruise recommended. [/sarcasm]
