Celebrity Baby Name Update: Will Nicole Richie's Sparrow Fly?

Celeb Kids, Baby Names

What makes celebrity baby names strike a nerve? Sometimes they're cutting-edge stylish, like Maddox, Angelina Jolie's litte boy. Sometimes they're offbeat, like Gwyneth Paltrow's daughter named Apple. Once in a long while they're truly eye-popping, like Bronx Mowgli, Ashlee Simpson's son. So what's the secret behind the latest water-cooler sensation, Sparrow?

Sparrow Midnight Madden is the newborn son of reality-TV star Nicole Richie and musician Joel Madden. Sparrow's big sister Harlow was a style maker, widely hailed as one of Hollywood's most fashionably named kids. The name Sparrow, though, is meeting with a much cooler reception.

The problem? Well, it's certainly offbeat. Few of us have ever heard of a person named Sparrow. The real point of contention, though, seems to be that the name sounds feminine.

It's curious that a name you've never heard of can feel too feminine. It's not the sound of Sparrow that does it -- when words like Shadow and Arrow show up as names, they're usually masculine. The issue is the sparrow bird itself. The charming little parts of nature, including flowers and songbirds, are expected to end up in the girls' names column. (Somewhere out there, a macho male sparrow is chirping in resentment as it tears a bug limb from limb.)

In our society, a female with a slightly masculine name is usually considered the height of style. Think of Cameron Diaz and Hayden Panettiere. A male with a slightly feminine name, though, can be an embarrassment. Young Sparrow has run into that double standard.

If you'd like to read more about Sparrow and all the latest famous baby names, take a tour of the new site NameCandy.com. You'll find a daily celebrity name blog, a baby name lookup to see who in Hollywood has chosen your favorite name and, best of all, the second home of me, The Name Lady.

Nicole Richie exposes Harlow to the press

Nicole Richie
Nicole Richie refuses to shield her daughter from the paparazzi. The daughter of Lionel Richie, who was quite possibly exposed to such press and scrutiny practically her whole life, made it through all that A-OK, and feels that it's wrong to keep little Harlow out of the spotlight.

Says Richie, she wants her new babe, born to Richie over eight months ago with rocker Joel Madden, to live life and experience everything these is that goes along with that. I guess photo ops are included. Richie has a point in that she feels she can't hid her daughter forever.

Regardless of how we feel about seeing celebrity kids and their parents toting them around like this season's must-have handbag, it looks like the trend of celebrities having, and sharing, their children, is here to stay. After all, believe it or not, celebrities are people too! In this case, Nicole and Joel are rolling with it. According to Richie, it's an important decision for a mom to make.

Nicole Richie's new online charity

Newborns, Babies, Life & Style, Celeb Parenting, In The News, Baby Essentials

Nicole RichieWho knew that former party girl Nicole Richie was such a giving and charitable person? I think that the way she has turned her life around and started giving back to those less fortunate is wonderful and I applaud her efforts. And apparently she has only just begun helping children - here and around the world.

Through the Richie-Madden Children's Foundation, Nicole is launching an online gift registry that will help needy mothers and their children. Families in need can sign up through local social service agencies and submit a list of the things they need for their children. Asked-for items could include cribs, blankets and other essentials. Donors could then look at the registry and choose what they want to contribute. Initially, the registry will benefit families in New York and Los Angeles, but the hope is to take it nationally and then internationally.

I think this is fantastic idea and love the idea of being able to choose a family to give to and personally pick out what they receive. Way to go Nicole!

Paris Hilton's man ready to be a dad

Celeb Parenting

Call me slow, but I just realized that Paris Hilton is dating former best friend Nicole Richie's boyfriend's twin brother. I mean, I knew she had a boyfriend (she always has a boyfriend), but I just snapped to the fact that Joel Madden and Benji Madden are two different people.

At any rate, Paris Hilton's latest fling sounds like it might be more than just a fling after all. At least that's the way her boyfriend Benji makes it sound when talking with Ryan Seacrest on his radio show yesterday. The brothers Madden were there to discuss their upcoming Good Charlotte tour, but the talk soon turned to fatherhood.

Of course Joel is singing the praises of fatherhood. He is, after all, the father of Nicole's 5-month-old daughter Harlow. But it seems that Benji is also feeling paternal these days and admits that the glow of love has got him feeling that anything is possible. "I'm so beyond happy," he says. "Of course," he added, "when you're that happy, you think about everything. I've never been so happy. Nothing worries me in life anymore. When you find that best friend, that love, all your worries kind of go away. Your work gets better and everything you do, you have someone supporting you, and she's that for me. I've never been supported so much."

Aww, isn't that sweet? They say there is someone for everyone. Could Benji be the one who will make a mother out of Paris?

Lionel has some fun at Nicole's expense

Newborns, Just For Dads, Celeb Kids, Life & Style, Celeb Parenting, Behaving Badly, In The News, Alcohol & Drugs, That's Entertainment

Music legend Lionel Richie recently had a little fun at his daughter, Nicole Richie's, expense. The singer was speaking at the TV Land Awards where he was being honored with the Icon Award when he had a few words to say about Ms. Richie.

Said Lionel: "Forget about surviving 40 years in the music business. Just surviving 27 and 1/2 years of Nicole Richie has been a struggle and a half." Richie went on to say he was a survivor for all the parents out there.

Nicole got her first shot at fame as Paris Hilton's sidekick in Fox television's The Simple Life. She later made more of a notorious name for herself spending time in jail (all of 82 minutes) after a conviction for driving under the influence of drugs. You may recall she was pulled over after rambling down a one-way street the wrong way. Now Nicole is known more for her three-month-old daughter Harlow than she is for her hard-partying ways. I'm sure Grandpa Lionel is ultimately very proud of her for being able to turn everything around--and giving him what parents always want--a grandbaby!

Nicole Richie receives parenting award

Celeb Parenting

I've been a parent for almost 26 years and the closest thing I've gotten to a parenting award is a coffee mug with "World's Greatest Mom" on it. Nicole Richie has been a mother for just about six months and she's getting a Golden Pacifier Award from Babytalk Magazine.

Does that surprise you? Babytalk thought it might and has an explanation at the ready: "Honoring Nicole Richie with a Babytalk Golden Pacifier Award might come as a surprise to some, but we felt that she deserved some recognition for her turnaround since becoming a mom," says editor-in-chief Lisa Moran.

The cynic in me thinks it sounds like they are giving her an award not so much for being a great mother, but for not being a bad mother. However, Richie may legitimately deserve that award for what she has done for other mothers. She and baby daddy Joel Madden founded the Richie-Madden Children's Foundation, which supports disadvantaged mothers and their children.

Also receiving a Golden Pacifier is actress Ricki Lake, whose documentary The Business of Being Born is recognized by the magazine as "sparking a much-needed conversation about the state of modern childbirth."

Congratulations to Nicole and Ricki. And to all you regular moms who weren't even nominated: go out and buy yourself a nice coffee mug. You deserve it!

Nicole Richie misses the simple life

Newborns, Life & Style, Celeb Parenting

New motherhood -- fulfilling as it is -- can be a difficult adjustment. I can only imagine that adjusting to life with a demanding young baby has to be especially hard for a young celebrity mom who's used to spending her days shopping and her nights partying.

That's why it didn't surprise me when I read that an "insider" recently told the press that Nicole Richie is torn between enjoying life as a new mom and missing her old party girl ways. She calls life with baby Harlow "beyond amazing," yet misses her former, carefree lifestyle. Yep, that about sums it up.

I remember sitting in a rocker on my third night as a new mom. Suffering from the baby blues and sleep deprivation, as well as a little uncertainty about why my baby wouldn't stop crying, I began to wonder if life would ever be the same again. What I didn't realize then -- tears falling, hormones raging, brain exhausted -- was that I was right; life would never be the same again, it would be better.

Nicole may already realize that, despite what this "insider" says. But if not, I'm sure that she soon will. What about you -- did you mourn your former life when your child came along?

Joel Madden's daughter his "true love"

Celeb Kids, Celeb Parenting

It's always heartwarming to see a loving parent with their child, but there's something extra adorable when it's a father doting over his little girl.

Rocker Joel Madden is obviously not immune to the charms of his three-month-old daughter Harlow. He recently told a crowd at a concert, "You know, no matter how many beautiful girls there are in this audience, I must confess that three months ago, I had a little baby girl, and she's my one and only true love."

Awwwwwww...............adorable. Unless of course you happen to be Nichole Richie, Harlow's mother and girlfriend of Madden. Then that "one and only true love" business gets a little personal!

Nicole Richie's daughter a genius (according to Grandma)

Newborns, Development, Celeb Parenting

Harlow Madden, daughter of Nicole Richie and singer Joel Madden might only be three months old, but her proud grandma is convinced the baby is acquiring skills at a lightening speed.

Brenda Richie told US magazine, "The other day I was holding her, and Harlow said, 'Hi!'" She also said that the little prodigy is already trying to crawl.

It's not uncommon for proud family members to embellish a new baby's brilliance just a wee bit. However Nicole Richie, is apparently is able to discriminate between random sounds and true speech and said, "I don't think she (Harlow) knew what she was saying!"

Three-month-olds make all sorts of wonderful babbling sounds which are easily interpreted as real words by parents revealing in something other than wails coming out of their offspring. If you know to listen for the "I love you" in the following YouTube, it sort of sounds like that's what the baby is saying, but without being able to see the scroll on the bottom you get very different translations. It's fun to test out by sharing it with illiterate children or people who can't see the screen.

People in my house heard: "I have a headache", "How are you" and "I want blue." What do you hear hear? Do you think your baby is (or was) an early talking genius?

Nicole Richie desiging maternity clothes?

Money & Work, Places To Go, Life & Style, Celeb Parenting, Rumors, Mommy Musts

Both Perez Hilton and I think this is a crock, but he's posting about it anyway, so I'm throwing my two cents in as well. Nicole Richie is purportedly (at least according to the LA Times, although I couldn't find the article) interested in designing a line of maternity clothes.

Well, I for one hope it's true! Look, let's get serious here for a minute. We've all been there and we know maternity clothes suck. That's right--they suck. No matter how expensive they are or where we get them, even when we try to select items appropriate for the office, we come off looking like something only Roal Dahl could dream up.

Nicole Richie, to me anyway, has a sense of style if nothing else. And she's been pregnant too. Perhaps she was also fed up with looking craptacular when with child. Pregnant women should look glorious and be supremely comfortable at all times, whether at the Oscars or the office. Perhaps Ms. Richie could find the time to merge those two worlds.

I don't know if I'd be able to afford anything she offered, but I would at least be interested to spy what she designed. So, uhm, Nicole, even if you weren't thinking of getting into the maternity clothes business, maybe you should???

It's a girl for Nicole Richie!

Pregnancy & Birth, Bump Watch, Celeb Parenting

Darn it! Harlow Winter Kate Madden was the name we were going to choose if our next one was a girl, and now that's right out! I mean, imagine how embarrassing it would be to show up at one of those big Hollywood parties and have to say, "That's your daughter, Harlow Winter Kate Madden? Why, that's our daughter's name too!"

Well, thanks to Nicole Richie and Joel Madden, we'll have to pick another name, because that's the name they gave their daughter, born yesterday weighing six pounds, seven ounces. "The beautiful healthy baby girl left the hospital with her ecstatic parents," according to the couple's rep.

"Having a baby is the most exciting thing that's ever happened to me, and to us," said Madden previously. He is the lead singer for the band Good Charlotte. Richie, of course, is the formerly wild adopted daughter of singer Lionel Richie and on-again-off-again pal of Paris Richie Hilton. The pair also recently created the Richie Madden Children's Foundation, "dedicated to bringing meaningful opportunities to children in all corners the globe."

Congratulations to the happy couple!

Nicole Richie fears pain of childbirth

Pregnancy & Birth, Celeb Kids, Celeb Parenting

According to this article, Nicole Richie is so scared of the pain of giving birth that she has consulted a hypnotist. Richie, whose child with Joel Madden is due later this month, is working on learning to "relax, stay calm and think positive thoughts as the big day approaches."

I was pregnant a very long time ago, but I do not recall ever feeling afraid of the pain I would experience during the birth. I probably should have been, but I was also very young and ignorance sometimes really is bliss. I am glad I wasn't preoccupied with that reality as I think it would have marred the otherwise wonderful experience of being pregnant.

But if I were to find myself pregnant today, I think it would be a totally different story. Age has made me a wimp in many ways and let's face it, childbirth hurts. What about you? Were you overly worried about the pain of childbirth during your pregnancy? How did you deal with it?

Joel Madden designs baby clothes

Just For Moms, Just For Dads, Bump Watch, Celeb Kids, Life & Style, Celeb Parenting, Baby Essentials

Pregnancy clearly agrees with Nicole Richie and boyfriend Joel Madden. She looks healthier than she has in ages and together, the couple have recently exhibited some surprising generosity and selflessness. Instead of a baby shower for themselves, they hosted a shower for expectant and new moms at the Los Angeles Free Clinic in Hollywood. And these surprised mothers-to-be weren't gifted with the cheap stuff. "Everything they got, we got," Richie says, "so everything that will be in their nursery, will be in our nursery."

Impending fatherhood has even inspired Madden to create a line of baby clothes for The Good Charlotte's DCMA Collective clothing brand. "I was inspired to make baby clothes because I'm excited to share something I love with my kid. I think it would be really awesome for me and the baby to dress alike," Joel tells PEOPLE.

But the cute line of rocker-inspired hoodies, tees and onesies isn't just about dressing up baby. A portion of the sales will go to the Richie-Madden Children's Foundation. "Not only do I want to teach my child how to own something, but also how to contribute to the community," says Joel. The clothes are already available and Madden hopes to add kids' shoes to the line next summer.

Nicole Richie's pregnancy heals family rifts

Bump Watch, Celeb Kids, Celeb Parenting

There is nothing like a new baby to bring a broken family together. Pregnant celebrity Nicole Richie says her own impending motherhood has helped her to reestablish the bond with her biological mother. Richie was adopted by singer Lionel Richie as a young girl and has reportedly had very little contact with her biological parents over the years.

She tells Access Hollywood that "there was just something inside of me that felt a responsibility to mend any issues that I've had with my parents in the past, because, listen, I've put them through a lot."

I had a similar experience with my own pregnancy and then again with my daughter's. I think it is a necessary step in growing up to look back and review your own childhood through adult eyes. And I think Nicole's recognition of the importance of healing past hurts before trying to raise up a child is a good sign of her readiness to be a mother. I don't think we are looking at another Britney Spears here.
